Gravity Falls is a show that balances dark themes and light-hearted fun. What's even more impressive is that it's a kid-friendly cartoon.

Rick and Morty finds this balance nicely as well, but it's more for teens and adults.

Neither of those shows are too dark for me because they don't even get close to overdoing it on the dark elements. A show that overdoes the dark elements for me is the Corpse Party anime...way too much gore for my liking.

I hate shows that overdoes dark elements by adding severe gore as well.

I own the US/UM combo pack. I just work severely often, so I can't even enjoy my games. :/

I think the The Force Awakens was a more stable movie, but it was also a much safer one. Whereas The Last Jedi was rockier, but when it was good, it was real good, and it took the bigger risks with the direction.

Best of the soft-reboot was Rogue One.

Anyway, finished chapter 2 of XC2.

Xenoblade will never be free of its shackles of RNG will it? Whether it's collectibles or blades, RNG is out to get you. At least it looks like you can pay for some items if you cant get the items.

Got my first rare blade, and it's one of the designs I really liked.

Not a huge fan of her personality though. Unfortunately, she went to Nia so she has 2 healers. She is actually slightly better than Dromarch, but I want to keep the canon Blade around.

Second, and last rare blade is a giant puff ball that wants to eat everything. Not sure if Majin Buu, or Kirby. But the weapon it comes with is awesome. Feels like i'm hitting people with a blitzball!

Character interactions are great. "You can't just go and call a lady heavy" Rex and Pyra are adorable together. TBH every character relationship is pretty great right now.

Getting more used to the gameplay, and with multiple partners it's pretty fun. Plus, more blades.

Locations are still great.

Im glad XCX has gotten me used to constantly being attacked by other enemies, but XC2 is still pretty crazy with it. So many enemies roaming around in giant paths.

Why did Jin have to be a bad guy. . .his design is so good.

Someone brought up a good thought on why Camilla and Azura were on the New Years Banner, despite them having Seasonals before. Remember how when the game first came out, dataminers found the images of Winter Robin and Winter Tharja in the files? And then some of us thought of the possibility that FEHeroes was planned to come out before Christmas until they decided to make it February?

Well, someone theorised if it was just as possible for them to have been planning the New Years Banner alongside the Christmas Banner back then before they decided to release FEHeroes in February. And that just as they possibly planned the 4 Winter characters before moving it to February, they could've also planned the 4 New Years characters as well.
I mean, when you look at the Winter Banner, you have Chrom, Robin, Lissa and Tharja, 3 of the main characters and the popular character. When you look at the New Years Banner, you have the 2 most popular siblings from both sides and you have the 2 main characters that are on both sides in either version. Ignoring the obvious powerbuff they got, the Banners themselves are pretty basic. And had the game come out before Christmas, each character would've only had that one Seasonal version at the time.

But when it got moved to February, since they didn't release the Christmas and New Years units, they decided to play catch-up with Chrom & Camilla & represent both Awakening and Fates with the Easter Banner since they were popular and possibly felt like a necessity to get a Seasonal version of them out very early in FEHeroes beginning.
But they also decided at some point to keep all the Seasonal characters that they planned for last year for this year, hence why Chrom and Camilla get another Seasonal when it's possible that they had already been made. And had they released FEHeroes before Christmas, and with it the Winter & New Years Banners, we may have possibly gotten different characters for the Easter Banner.
Sure, it's only a theory(A Game Theory), but it does make some sense when you consider that we only knew about Robin and Tharja and nothing else really. We didn't think of the possibility that there was more planned or some units were already planned, just not in the files like Robin and Tharja. And considering they decided to keep Robin and Tharja for the Winter Banner, albeit powerboosted, there is the possibility that any other characters they had planned for the Seasonal Banners back then they decided to keep as well, hence why we got Camilla rather than say Ryoma or Hinoka.

Time to say goodbye to 2017 and hello to a new year. The only memorable time(s) I had this year was acquiring a and amiibo before they became very rare and expensive as well as snowy weather blessing my area three weeks ago. My stepmother's making reuben sandwiches for the new years celebration suggesting to me she's going to visit my step-aunts, some of them being a bit older than me. I'm not going though, since I just love the solitude. My new years resolution is to find other games to play than just Super Smash Bros. and Tekken series. Maybe I'll return to Mario Party and Street Fighter since it has been several years since I've played any of those.

I myself is guilty of this too back in the day, and even back in XC2 discussion I was a bit overheated too, but I still stick to my "design isn't an issue" opinion". Eventually I tried to PM some users, and mostly ended with "Agree to disagree".

All in all, I hope this thread should try to stay neutral even when discussing some certain topics... or perhaps like how mods response... don't even talk about controversial topics in social threads in the first place...

And last thing I mention this is because well... thanks to me... I have drive a user away from this website... and this is never a good thing. I remember I do have some disagreements with him back in the day. But I never insult him or have ill will with him... just man... I beat Daruk's trials in botw and am on to Urbosa's. The bosses are a pain in the butt on master mode because you have limited arrows for chip damage to stop their regeneration but it didn't give me too much trouble. At least there's some much needed expansion of secondary characters.

Looks like things are coming up successfully for me as 2017 starts to wrap up!

+Finished 'binge-watching' Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator's Story mode (Mainly because even if GG's story is cool, there's hardly any meaningful gameplay to it at all - it's more of a Guilty Gear movie) and downloaded the Rev 2 update.

+"Just watch as it turns out not to be Chrom." I said to my sister when I booted up FEH for the daily Orbs.

CHROMSMAS HAS ARRIVED!!!

Just when I thought I had little chance of scoring at least one character, Chrom shows up! I'm pretty satisfied with this outcome. Maybe the other characters will come up again in a future bundle of Seasonal Heroes, or get replaced with other characters in Christmas Gear like Christmas Eirika, Ephraim, etc...

And last but not least: I finished Super Mario Odyssey! Easily one of my Top 3 games of 2017 for me, and a shining example of "Nintendo Fun" you can find in a video game if you ask me.

+Yes, in the Dragon fight I absolutely played the Dragonborn theme. It's such a massive contrast to the rest of the Mario universe to suddenly fight a FREAKIN DRAGON.

+Bowser's Castle was a blast with the Japanese theme - I was calling it 'Mari-Oh' in my mind when playing with the Samurai Armour. Probably my third favourite level in the game. (Ask me which level I found a 'Let-down' and I'd answer the Lakeside Kingdom. I was hoping for a bit more.

+The Moon Kingdom was another good final level - Peaceful on the outside, but more difficult in the Moon's Core. The final battle with Bowser was decent but the real-highlight was escaping the collapsing arena... AS A MARIO-POSSESSED BOWSER!! However I was hoping for a bit more, perhaps an enemy to fight as Bowser in the core of the Moon like say Madame Broodal or a Lunar Goddess.

+And the ending was pretty silly too - I definitely thought Peach was gonna abandon both Mario and Bowser on the Moon and take the Odyssey for herself.

Either way, I've enjoyed Super Mario Odyssey from start to finish, and definitely one of the best games available on the Switch.

Even though this isn't related, but I finally beat that Territorial Rotbart!!!!!!!!!! Remember that 81 monster that everyone's complains about?

Odd fact:
- I wasn't fully prepared...
- I didn't expect to take down this Rotbart....
- One of my member actually has only TWO blades, I didn't notice this until I do chain attack, that made me sure that I couldn't win at first...
- I did two chain attacks... somehow I manage to survive that Rotbart's nasty roar that will surely wipe out one or to members or if you just finish your chain attack... than it's game over for you.
I did a bit if grinding by going to that nasty Iguna camp... and defeat those Igunas at once... thanks you Rex and other crews AI screw up sometimes I died a couple of times.
So this is what happens when you do full burst on chain attack, doing different Blade combos isn't easy already, if the monster goes coco cachoo at a certain HP... well... you will be sure to get mad... like me...

I still am not sure what does full burst do... my guess is full burst will let three party members attack/ use Blade special arts simultaneously, because after the full burst that Demon King Gilbert was instantly KOed/Eviscerated.

Well if we are talking about writing.... I'll change the subject ever so slightly.

Question about the media you like.

How dark can a work be before you consider it too dark for you? What if a work deals with very dark subjects but also deals with very lighthearted stuff at other times?

I'm late to this but I want to give my take:
I like a balance in the scale of Idealism and Cynicism, I don't like fully ideal stories but at the same time I don't like fully cynic ones. I think that an Idealistic story isn't going to be as bad or unenjoyable as a Cynic one in the exact oppsite of the scale, but that's not the main focus here.

Overall, I like "dark" shows, as long as it serves a purpose, being Dark and Edgy for the sake of it is just bad writing and is mostly used as a way to(fail to) make it "more realistic". Shows that go full on the Cynicism scale are some of my least favorites, because what's the point of caring if everything and everyone is **** and there is no hope for these characters and world? Cynicism needs a balance, if there aren't strikes of Idealism like hope, a sense of morality or characters attaining their goals, most people aren't going to bother.
Fate/Zero is a perfect example for this done right, as despite all the **** that happens, there's still a theme of hope in it and while most characters don't get their happy ending, some two characters manage to get the best out of the war.
Can't think of an example for something fully cynical but I guess I should be glad I can't.

I'm pretty sure most of the content this year was planned in advance, I want to say that Brave Heroes and Sacred World were the first non-planned banners: the former because the earliest they could have done it was after the game's release and the latter because it just seems like a response to the complaints of lack of SS representation. Trick or Treat also seems like a response to certain requests imo.

Xenoblade 2 update:

-Killed alot of monsters and got some level-up.
-Did the Xenoblade tradition. (read: get killed by a overlevel monster when you are fighting another group of weaker monsters)
-Died trying to fight a enemy who was too powerful
-Advanced quit alot in the story, still liking it so far.
-And most importantly, I finally found the best character in the game.

I want those soldiers for the next Smash. They are the heroes we deserve.

Well if we are talking about writing.... I'll change the subject ever so slightly.

Question about the media you like.

How dark can a work be before you consider it too dark for you? What if a work deals with very dark subjects but also deals with very lighthearted stuff at other times?

It's not really a matter of the level of darkness so much as how it's applied. For example and without going into too much detail, I love the silent hill series. Physiological things in general like Hitchcock's 'The Birds", Alice Madness Returns, The Stanley Principle, Jakob's Ladder, etc interest me. I'm not exactly a horror fan but can overlook that if it's well done and smart. On the other hand I can't stand overly gory "snuff" media. Things like Outlast and The Evil Within just p*** me off. I'll tell you something, I watched a playthough of this old 1990s PC game Harvester and it genuinely disturbed me. The subtle build up, surreal environment that you slowly realize is exceedingly sick and how it conditions you had far more impact than the triple A, high budget modern gorefests ever could. All this stuff (except the Stanley Principle) is obviously horror so be warned if you look it up.

I also enjoy dark comedies. If you want a great example check out Drowning Mona. Batman TAS isn't a comedy but has surprisingly well thought out psychological aspects.

Psychological media is a dying art, drowning in an ocean of flamboyant, overly CGI dependent, drivel. *sigh*

My... update?
- I don't just fight regular same level monsters but try to take down any unique monsters that I can possibly face. Recently finally managed to kill that lv 81 giant gorilla in Gormott... and take down that inner ignua camp the third time without dying.
- Also having long stay in the inn also helps...That said, you have to have rest in inn in order to change some region's cloud level, whether you want to level up or not is your own choice.
- Tried to complete rest of the quests, despite they are long, there really isn't much and since it has progress, doing quests in XC2 don't really felt like a chore compare to the original XC.
- Sending mercs and completing merc missions.... and mostly common blades...
- Got over 99 common core crystals... again... and nope, no rare Blades yet...

When battling soldiers... I tend to switch to Japanese, they were way quiet...

Also Nia does a typical anime cat girl "NYAH~~~~~~" after doing chain attacks... wow...cute.
