That is possible too. As Cia, Volga and Wizzro weren't playable until a free update. At the same time, Medli was also a free update. So that's one possibility.

Yes, but one trophy on the 3DS is an incredibly minor detail. A full character wouldn't be scrapped so easily, especially if it got to the point of them putting it on the box. Tharja's trophy and FEW's roster aren't comparable.

A boxart leak is pretty much a set in stone factor. Mind you, people have put characters on the product's cover to sell something without putting a character in before, but it's extremely rare and is not taken well, so it's likely this practice was stopped(Wolverine was put on many comics he never actually appeared in).

This isn't like a game manual leak. Those sometimes are made before the final product is done. Sonic 06's manual is vastly outdated, mainly that stuff that was intended fell through due to a poor development process and game rushing(likewise, they fired the original testers, hence the huge amount of bugs in the game. Not to say it would be devoid of them if they weren't fired, but it wouldn't be nearly as much of a mess most likely).

This is a case of "it might as well be confirmed". Worst case scenario, the characters are very early DLC and were intended to be playable right away, but something happened behind the scenes. A very unlikely scenario, of course.

I know I might sound like a broken record but damn I really hope this game can come to the Switch even if it is gonna take to 2018. There's no problem with porting this game but only BandaiNamco and TRIGGER's will. BandaiNamco so far port a One Piece game to Switch... Dragonball Xenoverse 2 a Japan only board game...Namco Museum... Pokken Tournament DX (Wait, but this is a port and also a Pokemon game too) and that's pretty much it for now.
Man BandaiNamco seems to be sleeping on Switch as like Capcom in my opinion...
