On the bright side on that, it seems like Nintendo actually is attempting to make it easier for third parties to work with them this generation as part of their attempt to adapt. Their past issues on that front and the power gap that comes with a portable system definitely make it a matter of swimming upstream, but at the very least Nintendo actually seems to be trying in this department now.I don't think it's a matter of, Nintendo games cut into the sales of other games, moreso that Nintendo is just a ***** to work with for third party devs. They've had a long history of being difficult to work with, and as Nintendo console gradually lose relevance in the market, it just makes it that much harder for devs to be interested. Why go to Nintendo who is hard to work with and has a smaller userbase when you can go to Playstation or Xbox who are both much larger and much easier.
I think this is part of why Nintendo's already started to see a surge of indies even before their devkits are really widely available. They started fixing things on that front during the Wii U gen and with the Switch now have a ton of compatible engines, so people willing to give them a chance that wouldn't be risking millions of dollars or be forced to downgrade their games doing so are more than able to jump onto the ecosystem.
