Today was so stressful.

Like I'm completely tanked. It's too sunny to sleep, but I don't want to do anything.

As far as the E3 news goes...eh.

Zelda is still the only interesting thing they have.

#FE has been at 2 E3s already and is out in Japan, it's hardly an exciting thing to show off, and comes out in less than a month anyway. I would actually imagine most fans of it would want to avoid spoilers, and would avoid watching the stream because of that. Everybody else doesn't care or will watch just to riff on how "weeby" it is in the chat.

Same with Dragon Quest, it's a game that should have been localised a long time ago and if you know anything about the franchise, you know what to expect from it.

Monster Hunter is Monster Hunter. They're good games, but they also suffer from sequelitis. I know what to expect from it.

Same goes for Sun and Moon. I mean it's good it's at E3, and it should be, but I got burned out on Pokemon ages ago.

Pokemon GO could potentially be interesting though. I might tune in for that.

And then Zelda is the only thing I'm genuinely excited for. But I still wish that wasn't the case.

At least they have more than one game, it's just the least exciting line-up they could have went with IMO.

Saying it could be the end of Star Fox seems to be a little extreme though.

It's a niche franchise, a niche genre, on Nintendo's worst selling system yet and the gimmick controls scared people off (from the Wii U itself and this game).
And Star Fox still somehow usually sells better than half their franchises despite all that. But I don't see that as meaning that one game selling well below par for the series is going to kill it. In fact, I see it as the opposite. The IP is worth so much that one failure isn't worth bailing for.

It's obvious the reason it sold so poorly was due to individual decisions about the game combined with general circumstances about the company. They'd be insane to blame the IP for that, and hopefully they won't.

Well don't forget 'leo' so 'Sun Helmet Lion'...
It's "Solgaleo" not "Solgaleoleo"
The "leo" could be interpreted as lion but then "ga" would be unnacounted for
Or it's supposed to be a double meaning, being able to be interpreted as either "Sun's Lion" or "Sun's Helmet"

You do realise those things are pretty synonymous, right? :p

I mean to be fair, they've killed franchises because of one game before.

That's a shame. I rather liked Star Fox Zero.

Still, I wonder what happened. It had a relatively strong opening.

The words are fused together to make one word...'galeo' is likely a combination of 'Galea' and 'Leo'...like 99% of all pokemon names...

Hasn't even sold 500k by now. Bombed in Japan.

The control scheme likely turned away potential buyers.

The fact Wii U hasn't sold much doesn't help either, but then again, it's not a console without successes, as seen with Splatoon.

By strong opening, do you mean people's first impressions when it got it's first trailer, or the opening of the game itself?

If you meant the former, I can't say that was the case. At best, initial impressions of the game were very mixed. They improved over time as more info came out and what not, but then nosedived again closer to release.

EDIT: Oops, you meant sales. I should stop posting.

I still like to think Solgaleo as Sun Galileo.

Most likely the negative press attention.
It was pretty hard to find websites that actually spoke positively about it. After the initial excitement waned, sales dropped off pretty quickly I guess.

I have a feeling that Star Fox will be taking another long break now, until public interest again rises.

Seriously, I don't see how Star Fox Zero had a "relatively strong opening".

The only place it sold remotely well was the US and even so, those weren't spectacular numbers by any means. Other Wii U games had much stronger openings like MK8, Splatoon and Smash.

Very mixed and divisive opinions, be it from critics or players, didn't help matters either.

Yeah, Ninty's always pretty erratic with what they do, so that's always a little worrying no matter what the situation is.

Still, which series went down and when?

The last two times I'm aware anything was in danger and hinged on a single game, they issued ultimatums, and both times the series had been struggling for a very long time. One was Fire Emblem, which they let have one last hurrah which then proceeded to make the series do a huge 180 and go from being on the chopping block to being one of their top IPs, and the other was Chibi-Robo, which had completely idiotic circumstances behind the whole thing and went out with a spinoff whimper instead of the bang that a last chance deserves.

At any rate, if series circumstances get as much warning as those two did, even if worst came to absolute worst Star Fox likely has at least one more game in it before they would pull the plug just so they can let us know it's our job to bail it out first. And Star Fox typically sells better than Fire Emblem OR Chibi Robo did prior to FE saving itself, so I imagine there would be a bit more mercy for it.

F-Zero went under because of F-Zero GX. And had more to do with Miyamoto's personal bias against GX than it did with sales.

. . .Does every bad situation with Nintendo lead back to Miyamoto? Well except Other M, anyway.

On the bright side (not for poor F-Zero, of course, but for anything else that might have to be worried), that happened over a decade ago, so hopefully in the time since then and especially with the recent restructuring Nintendo will be a bit better about handling series situations now.

I thought it was moreso Nintendo focusing on Mario Kart as their main racing IP rather than F-Zero...

I actually think they'd sooner make a lot of their franchises into TV shows or something than make another game, Star Fox included.

There is no reason why they can't do that. Especially with Star Fox. The animated short was a hit. The game was anything but. Makes perfect sense.

Miyamoto has no bias against GX and I know that for a fact.

If those Criterion rumors were legit then it wasn't because of Miyamoto hated GX but that they couldn't find a developer to do it. Don't pull that BS that fans still say like with how Miyamoto hated Donkey Kong Country when he didn't.

The reason people think Miyamoto hates it is because of his bull**** 'new control scheme' excuse

I know it's fun to bandwagon on the hate for Miyamoto, but please remember that the guy was foundational to the company's success.

A few bad choices does not negate a lifetime of good ones.

Even then it'll just be a recreation of SNES F-Zero which is a good game but X and GX did so much better.

I agree but even then it's less of that and more of no decent developers out there to do it.

AM2 (who made GX) is dead
Criterion sucks now
The Wipeout devs disbanded YEARS ago.
Sumo (who did the Sonic All-Star Racing games) probably won't do it considering they doing something else
And their last resort is the Fast Racing NEO devs.

I seriously want Sumo and the Fast Racing NEO devs to do a new F-Zero

The irony is that if you're a well-liked person, and yet you do something bad, people will only pay attention to the bad things you've done.

Heck, there might not even be a need to do that. They could just move him to making something completely different than what he is now.

Only things Sakamoto's done since Other M are Tomodachi Life and Miitomo, and I don't see anyone complaining about those.

Reassignment is always a valid option, it's just a matter of where to put him.

No one's really hating on the guy, just the choices he's made recently.

I think everyone's clear that Miyamoto's massively important to the gaming industry as a whole, but that doesn't mean he should be negated of any criticism.

Poor Falcon, they should've added him to Mario Kart 8 at least. Would've been a lot better DLC than Mario and Peach in costumes.
We should've gotten Falcon over Pink Gold Peach to start with and then got Falcon in a catsuit as DLC.

Likewise, success does not make any poor decisions magically not matter or not be worth discussing/being open about them.

Are you SERIOUSLY comparing two of the most successful Nintendo IPs' sales to Star Fox's? Granted, Splatoon is brand new, but Star Fox, as much as I love it, is pretty much on the scale of Kirby and Pikmin, if not worse; it's actually a niche series. It's no wonder that MK and SSB sold a lot more.

Indeed. Look what happened when he decided to give a "new standard" for Paper Mario series.
It's not completely on him for that. He suggested it. The actual team asked a set of fans with a vague question "Do you like story in Mario games?" and obviously they answered "No", not realizing the team meant the RPG's, where story matters.

At least, that applies for Sticker Star specifically. Nobody knows why Color Splash is that way beyond the fans' answer. For all we know, Miyamoto didn't do jack to make it like that beyond a suggestion. I agree he has made bad decisions at times, but Paper Mario is only partially his fault for the way it is. He likes innovation, after all. I gotta admit, rehashing the exact same gameplay over and over doesn't always work, so I understand that point of view.

As for F-Zero, the issue is finding a new way to make it fun again, that Mario Kart isn't doing. That's the problem they're having. It's not nearly as easy to innovate F-Zero when it's still a realistic car-racing game to a degree. Other than the speed and slamming into each other, it doesn't have much else that is notable. Mario Kart has jumping, items, the various speed techniques, new vehicles. It's not hard to see why expanding on F-Zero's gameplay is overall more difficult. And right now, the fear of "nobody would buy a near identical game" is at an all-time high. It's even one of the few complaints about New Super Mario Bros.(the other being the character choices). Not to say the rehash bit is entirely justified, but it has put some off from that series. Gamers are much harder to please these days. We're just too varied. And you need major sales these days as well, so smaller niche games are a risk. Nintendo itself can't just throw out random risky games anymore. They're not doing that well money-wise for that kind of thing to work. Even if it'd be great for many players to have more variety, they're still a business.

Well, this is the fandom that regularly tells Sakurai to go kill himself because he added a character they didn't like/ didn't add a character they wanted and blasted Iwata until literally the day he died, so in light of that I think everyone here is being comparatively level-headed. Apologies if I've been being a bit too harsh, I know he's made a huge impact in gaming and Nintendo.

He's made plenty of good choices in his time and he has the potential to make more, it's just that perhaps he's making a few too many choices for everyone lately. He works with a LOT of games, so with him being that busy it probably dramatically increases the chances of his making decisions that don't turn out so well since his attention is so divided. Heck, many of the games he's at least credited in even recently are really good, it's just that he's working on so much at once that Sturgeon's Law is kicking in and some elements of his design philosophy are reaching into games where it might not be such a good idea for them to be applied.

That and one man does not a team make. Sometimes when you see big name devs go off on their own, they either fall off the face of the earth or just outright embarrass themselves. He likely has plenty of unnamed people assisting him through every great game he makes that are all integral to making them awesome in their own way. Remove too many of them, and without the unseen helpers things might crumble apart a bit.

Lillie reminds me of Caitlin in a way tbh...

I actually find it kinda strange that her artwork has her appear angry or irritated, but her in game sprite she has a more nervous expression...

Hau is definitely giving me similar vibes to Barry in a way...cept in a more chill way...
In the trailer he said he had 'chicken skin' instead of 'goosebumps'...is this going to be his main personality quirk where he screws up phrases and slang?

Besides Pikmin 3, Miyamoto's input hasn't particularly helped any game in recent memory.

The man was a legend, but he is way past his prime now. He should be letting Ninty's studios work on their own, really. But who has the courage to tell him that?

I saw the Pokemon news. I've enclosed it in a spoilers tag because it is a rather big wall of text.

Solgaleo and Lunala's typing definitely surprised me, especially when I thought they were going to be part Fire and part Dark respectively. After reading how Solgaleo's Steel-typing could be referencing the Earth's magnetic field, however, I can understand why it was given that type. Even Ghost-type for Lunala is understandable because of the common associations of ghosts with nighttime. I'm guessing Sunsteel Strike is a Steel-type move because it did neutral damage to Salamence and the attack is called "Meteor Drive" in the Japanese version, while Moongeist Beam is probably a Ghost-type move because it fits Luanda's typing and did super effective damage to Gengar. I'm also guessing Solgaleo will be a physical attacker while Lunala will be a special attacker based off their signature attacks.

For those complaining about the abilities: yeah, they may be rehashes of older abilities, but just remember that Reshiram and Zekrom's abilities was simply Mold Breaker with a fancier name.

As for the characters, I'm surprised Kukui is the Alola's region professor and not Hala. Kukui looked more like the professor's assistant with that first trailer, but now that we know that's not the case, I'm guessing Hala could be the former Alola professor who has now retired, and Kukui could be his son/grand-son. I don't mind Kukui is this region's professor though. In fact, I like it. He already seems like a pretty cool character. He sounds funny considering how they say he has taken Pokemon attacks head on to learn about them.

So we finally get to see that blond, vacation-dressed girl we first saw in those concept arts of Pokemon Sun and Moon. Lillie does look very interesting. I was originally thinking she'd be the "serious rival" character in the story compared to Hau based on theories that were discussed about her before the reveal, but the one detail that "she's not fond of making Pokemon fight in battles" doesn't scream "rival" to me. Then again, N was a rival character in Black and White and he was also against Pokemon battles, so maybe she could similar to N in that regard. I'm also willing to bet she is related to Alola's evil team since they call her "mysterious," "likes to read lots of books", and "works with Kukui for personal reasons." Maybe she is an undercover scientist for the evil team? I can only wonder.

Hau seems like he's going to be another friendly rival, but I have hopes that he will be more memorable than the Kalos trio. He gives me a Barry vibe minus the annoying part. Him being the same age as the player characters also has me thinking that we are back to playing as 10 year olds this time instead of teenagers (Hau doesn't really look like a teen IMO).

The Rotom Pokedex gives me another Yokai Watch considering how Rotom is a ghost that talks to you and guides you on your journey, but it seems like the Pokedex has a likable personality. I like how it can tell you about your next destination based off your interactions with others. It also makes me wonder if you will be able to receive a Rotom right from the get-go so that you can use it on your team. Anime-wise, I'm willing to bet Professor Oak will give Ash his Rotom so that it can be used for his Alola Pokedex.

I really like the QR code feature. It's definitely going to be very useful to use considering that scanning QR codes will register certain Pokemon into your Pokedex so that you can find where they are in-game. I'm going to try finding a Ralts QR code the day of the release so that I know where to catch one in order to have a Gallade on my story team. Exchanging QR codes to register Pokemon into each other's Pokedexes also sounds like fun.

And now the best for last... my thoughts about the region and my theories regarding what certain locations will be.

Four main islands to explore when Hawaii technically has eight? Hmm, something tells me the other islands could either be 1) Postgame material or 2) where you catch other legendaries. That extra island hanging off the island with the canyon seems rather suspicious. I'm willing to bet it's either 1) where you catch a legendary not Solgaleo and Lunala or 2) the location of this game's Victory Road. I can't find anywhere else on the map where the Victory Road could be.

Now to speculate what each island has, starting with island 1:

This is definitely the island where you start. The town in the middle looks like the starting village. The Rotom Pokedex in its mini trailer mentioned something about the Pokemon Trainer school, and I have a feeling its in the town directly beneath the starting town. My guess is that judging from the road to reach, it's probably going to be the "second town" you come across in your journey. The city is probably going to be the location of your first gym badge. I don't know what the town above it will provide though. The volcano could be a route location since it's based off the Diamond-Head volcano, which is extinct in real life.

Moving on to Island #2:

I can already find four major cities here where the next four gyms will probably be located. I think this is the second island you will explore. My guess is that you start in the city located above the lighthouse since it has a pretty distinct port. It also looks it's the city where the supposed resort/Water gym was located, that one building we saw from the first trailer of the games. The mountainous jungle located below is probably the route that leads to the to the lighthouse city. The resort with the beach is probably going to be a route, but I'm intrigued with the golf course behind it. Golf in Pokemon? That should be interesting to see. The city above the resort looks rather cool. I'm willing to bet that modern-looking building is the city's gym. Those water ponds located in the top left interest me though. I wonder what could they be?

Next up, island 3:
I can find already pinpoint two major cities where there will be probably be gyms: the one on the top left and the one on the top right. The top left city looks interesting. It gives me an Attack on Titan vibe with the walls. The one on the top right is just as interesting with dedicated Japanese garden space and the pagoda located at the tip. I have a feeling that pagoda is going to be the gym. Maybe it will be a Flying-type gym because of the height of the structure? That'd be cool to see, especially if the Flying-type gym leader dresses in traditional Japanese clothing and resembles Takumi from Fire Emblem Fates (I'd see him being a Flying-type trainer because of archery has air-like characteristics, and his bow has wind like patterns at the tips with wings at the center). OK, I shouldn't put my thoughts about Fire Emblem here since it's doubtful we'd even get a trainer who resembles a Fire Emblem character, but it was fun to think about the nonetheless. I also think that city with the pagoda is the one you'll visit first because of its distinct port, and you can see a boat headed straight for it.

Now, where could the 8th gym be located? I'm going to guess it's the supposed city located at the bottom center for now. Those born stuff located beneath the building in the trees are probably buildings, and the house in the trees is probably a gym.

That mountain in the middle is definitely based off Mauna Loa. It's probably the region's main mountain since Mauna Loa is supposed to be the largest volcano in Hawaii, and one of the largest mountains in the world. I wonder why there would be snow there though. I can't even tell whether or not it's supposed to be a town or some sort of research facility. I also wonder what's the deal with that stonehenge-like place with the water surrounding it.

Next stop on our tour: island #4:
There seems to be only own town/city here: the Pacifidlog Town lookalike where the boat seems to be headed (and probably the first place you'll visit in the island). In fact, this island looks rather... secluded.

I am willing to bet that canyon is where you will catch Solgaleo/Lunala. The part that gives it away is the cone-like mountain with the pedestial and the stairs located in front of it. It just screams "Solgaleo/Lunala's location" to me. I'm guessing this is where the climatic part of the story kicks in where the evil team begins to carry out their evil plan. It's large size looks pretty fitting for the final location you fight evil team.

But that what about the massive tree on the left and that lava-affected area on the right? They could also be potential location where you catch the legendaries as well. When we first saw Solgaleo in last month's trailer, it looked like it was summoned somewhere inside a tree, while Lunala looked like it was summoned within some sort of cave. That tree and the lava-affected area seem to match up with those locations...

Which begs the question: If the tree and the lava-affected area are where you catch the Sun and Moon legendaries respectively, what's the deal with canyon? It could be the region's Victory Road since it looks a challenging area to explore, but that ritual ground located in front of the cone mountain still looks suspicious. My guess then would be this where a ritual is performed to summon Solgaleo/Lunala to their respective tree/lava-affected area for them to be found. Let's give it some time and see which thought turns out true.

I already gave my thoughts what that extra small island could be a few paragraphs up.

And finally: Pearl Harbor:
I'm calling it now. This is the region's Pokemon League! Why would it be located on its own like this? It even looks so modern and grand that it just seems very fitting to be a Pokemon League. That tall white building definitely looks very fitting to be the Pokemon League. The only question then is this: What's the mansion-like building behind it supposed to be. I'm going to guess it is the champion's house for now, or it could be the port where you will be dropped off once you surpassed Victory Road (I don't see Victory Road being located here since there's no way it fit in such a tiny space).

Or maybe it's the new Battle Facility the hiker was talking about in Pokemon X and Y. That building looks like something that fits with the description "we have this Battle Facility like you've never seen." I'm not too sure about it though, since there doesn't seem to be any other location that looks like a Pokemon League building except for this one.

And like I said, this is definitely based off Pearl Harbor since the facility looks similar to the actual Pearl Harbor memorial. I guess that's another reason why it makes sense for this location to be the Pokemon League. The Pearl Harbor memorial is supposed to be a very patriotic and grand location in the United States, so that's just another reason it could be this region's Pokemon League. We'll see if I'm right in the coming months.

Besides Pikmin 3, Miyamoto's input hasn't particularly helped any game in recent memory.

I CALL BULL :

"Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon was developed by Next Levl Games, a Canadian developer who had previously worked on Nintendo-published titles Punch-Out!!! and the Mario Strikers series. Development of the game started in late 2010 with producer Shigeru Miyamoto overseeing the production.Miyamoto stated that he chose to work on the sequel simply because he "wanted to" after using the original game to test the hardware of the Nintendo 3DS.The original game for the GameCube was tested for 3D effects, but this was later scrapped. The North American title of the game was revealed to be renamed from Luigi's Mansion 2 to Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon at Nintendo All-Access during E3 2012."

"After 3D World was finished in late 2013, Miyamoto found that the Captain Toad levels reminded him of one of his earlier gameplay ideas inspired by the Rubik's Cube, so he suggested they create a separate Captain Toad game."

But these suggestions will be overlooked, because we need to call more George Lucas shenanigans on the table, and use a new scape goat of dark holes on nintendo.

The man was a legend, but he is way past his prime now. He should be letting Ninty's studios work on their own, really. But who has the courage to tell him that?

Well the fandom, obviously, considering how blunt the internet is.

The real question is whether said fandom will bother to put their opinions in an obvious enough place at a frequent enough pace to catch Nintendo's attention. We may think that Nintenjas read every page of every forum, but I highly doubt babbling on one of our hangouts would gather as much attention as, say, causing a Twitter trend in criticism of one situation or another.

Without an organized push, it probably just seems like the same idle complaining we do about literally everything else to a big company.
