Been a classic fan for so long and all I want is that trip back to 2D. This is all I want and all I need it's like Megaman 9, DKC Returns and Double Dragon Neon all over again
They want a "new" classic Sonic game. This looks like the same "old" classic Sonic. The only new thing I saw was the drop spin dash and more of the same old.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm still going to play it.

People keep saying "this is cool and all but I'm disappointed it's the only new game". Mostly Nintendo players.
This demonstrates two things:
1) Misinformation spreads SO fast. And you guys wonder why I get uppity about misinformation on things I like.
2) People clamour for a Classic Sonic game. They get one, and are disappointed at the idea it's "all they get".
I'm disappointed in the game itself not that it's the only thing we get. I didn't even know this thing was happening till 10 minutes ago.
It's the fact that Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't been really relevant in a long time and I want it to be so bad. Facing facts: this game is probably on the same level as something like Shovel Knight. Awesome, fun, popular but in no way AAA or revolutionary. A fun distraction for a little while. Nothing more.

Of course they can do it. As I said, I'm still going to play it, much like I played all of those Marios and Mega Men. I was just hoping for a little more innovation.

New developers.
New graphics and sprites, even on the old, remade stages.
New engine/technology (the Retro Engine).
Likely lots of new enemies and boss mechs.
New music.
New composers.
At least one new ability.
And plenty of new stage specific gimmicks were put on display (a MUST for a Classic Sonic game).
That's plenty of new.
This is exactly what Classic fans wanted. Most real Classic fans are really satisfied. It's even being developed by a member of the community. That's new even in gaming in general.
The only reason all these not-Classic fans are complaining is because they all think it's Sonic Team's big project, which it isn't. And because it's "not gonna be worth $60 because I need a 60 hour epic that looks like a Pixar movie to like that".
OH BUT GUESS WHAT GAME DID EXACTLY THAT AND PEOPLE CALLED IT "PADDING"? (points at avatar)
This game was made for the Classic fans, by Classic fans. There's nothing wrong with it.
Well; it appears I ended up tuning in here on the Nintenzone thread at around the time that the Sonic anniversary game was announced. I mean, I've never actually played a Sonic game before (yet I know that classic Sonic is considered the best by many), but is Sonic Mania really considered disappointing? I'd say its a nice little revival of the old days from what I've seen of it, but that's all I can say since I again have not played a Sonic game.
