Nice post! It was a great read!

And yeah, I don't think the Adventure games have aged that well either (especially SA1). But, from a personal standpoint...I love them, even with their flaws! Ever since I could get my hands on a copy of both SA1 and 2, I have loved them, even with their flaws. The fast action platforming that is central to Sonic, the interesting unique gameplay overall, the charm of it, it's just...fun...for the post part lol

From a personal enjoyment standpoint, these two games rank in some of my favorites of all time. But, if I had to give "reviewer" scores (cuz why not start some interesting conversation lol), I'd give the first game a 5/10, "average". It does a lot of things right, but it's bad aging reveals some key flaws. SA2 is better, and I'd give that one a 7/10, or "good". It still has critical flaws, but is a solid improvement from the 1st game

(my personal review scale is 10-9 is masterful, 8-7 is good, 6-5 is average-ish, 4-3 is bad, and 2-1 is dreadful).
Thanks!

I think they've aged, but not really to the point were it makes the game somewhat objectively worse. Just more of a product of its time.

In terms of rankings. I would give SA1 a 7.5/10 and SA2 an 8.5/10.

I think the Sonic levels in SA1 are bit better than SA2's, but SA2 is overall the better package.

I can agree with that.

If I looked at them at release, I probably would've given SA1 an 8 and SA2 a 9.5

and the Sonic levels in SA1 are GORGEOUS <3 So many fun levels in that one! The only one I don't like is Sky Deck, and even then it's not that bad.

Hey, Swamp Sensei Swamp Sensei

How's your project coming along?
We've officially shifted from a fighting game to an RPG.

That means we've included more characters, shifted roles and have a new plan for gameplay but many of the plot elements and character abilities are taken from our prior drafts.

I think we can make something pretty good here.

That said, let me give you guys a clue to the plot.

Ahem.

"Ezra."

Try and figure out what we mean.

Speaking of which, what do you think of the Adventure formula? For me, there are parts of the adventure formula I love! I like how they try to have unique gameplay in the games. However, a couple of the gameplay mechanics aren't executed that well, so for me, it's leaves me with a couple of conflicting feelings.

For SA1, I LOVED the Sonic stages, I liked the Gamma and Knuckles stages, I was ok with the Tails stages, but the Amy and Big stages ticked me off to no end.

With SA2, I LOVED the Sonic/Shadow stages, I like the Eggman/Tails stages a lot (even with cheap enemy placement), but the Knuckles/Rouge stages are poorly executed (but not as bad as the Amy and Big stories in SA1, imo). I don't quite hate the treasure hunting stages in SA2 for the most part, but they are still undoubtedly tedious and not well made.
Growing up, I loved the adventure games so I had a positive outlook on them. If I had to specify what I think now though:

  • Sonic: Sonic feels nice to control and overall his level design is really good; Though, there are a few glitches that can happen here and there
  • Tails: Sonic levels with a time limit. I enjoy playing them, though I think they could've done more with Tails.
  • Knuckles: Enjoyable, though I could care less about emerald hunting.
  • Amy: Her speed makes levels a chore to go through. Thankfully she only has 3 levels.
  • Big: Unnecessary and I had to look at the manual to understand his levels. Easily worst part of the game.
  • E-102 Gamma: Fun to just speed through and not too long. Probably my second or third favorite sections in the game.

  • Sonic and Shadow: An improvement over Sonic's SA gameplay control wise. Level design is more linear but I do enjoy it a lot.
  • Tails and Eggman: mech levels feel like a slower version of Gamma's levels. I prefer Eggman's mech levels over Tails.
  • Knuckles and Rouge: I definitely prefer the SA emerald hunting levels. The radar and hint system were better, and level design wasn't as confusing.

The Adventure formula definitely had its positives, though it also had its negative at times.

I still stand by the fact that SA1 Sonic is the best Sonic has controlled in 3D. He controllers really well in SA2, but's it's a bit more, for lack of a better term, slippery. The only real problem I have with SA1 Sonic is his moon jump.

Ezra, huh? Well, Ezra is my favorite of the Hitchhiking Ghosts from The Haunted Mansion. Clearly this means Disney is bankrolling the game with their magic. Yes. That's exactly it.

The moon jump feel in SA1 annoyed me. But in SA2, the physics feel *just right* to me.

Well, since I feel like talking about my quick thoughts on SA2, since I'm borrowing it from a friend right now, here are my thoughts:

Pros:
  • Unique level format: There's a larger part of me that loves the adventure format rather than hating it.
  • Speed stages: Sonic and Shadow's levels are SUPER fun to play.
  • Mech stages: I don't see why most people don't like these overall. Yeah, the cheap enemy placement can get annoying. But, blowing up crap is a ton of fun! Plus, the platforming is an enjoyable challenge to me.
  • Story is interesting: It's unique and just the right amount of dark- there's peril, tension, and possible death, but doesn't feel unnecessarily edgy *cough* Shadow the Hedgehog *cough*
  • Controls: They are as smooth as can be! I really think the controls in this game feel natural and well made. I feel in control of the characters.
  • Physics: The physics of the game just mesh with me very nicely. There's a right balance of speed in running, gravity, moving...everything, really.
  • Level design in general: Most of the levels are pretty well designed, especially the forest levels for the Sonic and Shadow stages, along with the famous city escape.
  • Colors: Very vibrant and awesome.
  • Chao Garden: I haven't played it much, but it's addicting, fun, and cute.
  • You can play as Doctor Eggman: Self-explanatory. He's a boss.
  • Charm: It's addicting and a ton of fun. The nostalgia factor is really strong here as well.
Cons:
  • Camera: UUUUUUGH. It is so wonky at times it hurts. It's at its worst in the boss battles.
  • Treasure hunting stages: Some of them are pretty well designed (I like Pumpkin Hill and Aquatic Mine in particular), but most of them are tedious and annoying.
  • Boss battles: Would be fine, but the camera makes this part of the game a pain.
  • Animation: Weird
  • Sound mixing: Infamously off
  • Plot holes in story: The story isn't nearly as important as the gameplay itself, but it still would've been nice to have a more logical story.
  • Cheap enemy placement: It sucks, because it's "fake" difficulty. (Don't know how to describe that better lol).

So as expected Nanu gave me some issues....

First off, his Sableye one shot my Mimikyu (technically two shot because of Disguise) with Shadow Ball which was unexpected...Fine then Sableye v. Sableye...

Attempted some Pain Split shenanigans with Misdreavus against his Persian but a Black Hole Eclipse just **** on it, Eviolite and all....Then I attempted to Thunder Wave his Persian with Drifblim to lower it's speed and while it survived the hit, it got flinched....:glare:

But after reviving Mimikyu two Leech Lifes were enough to take it out...it actually regained it's Disguise after being revived which was interesting...

btw Mimikyu has no Fairy STAB yet....

Lucky you.

I bet who gave it away one made things more convenient. Might as well give my Kartanas away using that method.
