Yahoo's "core" businesses - yahoo.com, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Messenger, and the like - are being sold to Verizon. I presume those will retain the Yahoo name.
The
rest of Yahoo's net worth is tied up in its share of Alibaba and Yahoo Japan, which will be its remaining holdings after the sale. The new company for those two holdings specifically is what they're calling Altaba - for, apparently, "alternate Alibaba."
Meyer is resigning so she can follow the core business to Verizon, since she gives more of a **** about than some Alibaba shares.
