You know...

I'm curious...

Have gamers as a whole become too picky in recent years?

And I still see a lot of hate for it.

"Too different." "New Pokemon are dumb" "Bad Writing" "Melodramatic" "Uncompetitive"

Stuff like that.
And I remember people complaining that Gen 6 wasn't melodramatic ENOUGH, although I'm not sure if they kept it up with Gen 7 or not. And that Pokemon is never different enough from past games.

I can't think of a single generation where the new Pokemon weren't called dumb, although at least Gens 6 and 7 had a honeymoon phase where everyone said they were the best ever. Gen 5 didn't even get that but slowly far later people who like that gen's Pokemon started crawling out of the woodwork.

This shattered fanbase will never get what it wants, because no one can agree on anything and everything is simultaneously too much and not enough. But everyone except the genwunners and the "I'm a manly grownup now" people are going to be tsundere and play it anyway.

Well, that's what happens when there's more competition

The more you have to choose from, the more picky you become

Stuff like that is pretty few and far between though, especially since people like that are usually the butt of many jokes in the pokemon community nowadays. (Those people stopped being taken so seriously after gen 5 when there was actually a big conflict over it.)

Though you can find hate for pretty much any game though.

No, it's just that now everyone can voice their opinion. I don't really get why you stress over this when you can literally find this complaints for virtually every game ever. It's not even a new thing, if you look back at message boards as far back as the early 2000s you can find plenty of complaining and hatred, even for games that have are praised by the majority of gamers nowadays.

Yeah, but that's just being picky. I'm picky enough and I don't usually get as worked up as most people do about games.

The real question is have gamers become more [REDACTED] about really piddly details about games over the past couple of years.

The logical answer to that is "Probably not, but getting more and more sick of it certainly makes it feel like it."

I was just thinking, say you don't like burger with mayonnaise. The only shop next to you always puts mayonnaise on their burgers. But you like burgers.

If it's the only place, you can go there and just "scrape the mayonnaise off". It's not pleasant, but it's your only option.

Now, another store opens across the street that makes burgers with no mayonnaise. Suddenly there is competition for your dollar and, and this particular place caters to your particular interests.

You could always ask the first store to make it for you without mayo. Burger places I think will do somewhat of a custom order if you ask.

As for what would be the equivalent going back out of the analogy. . .probably when gamers ask companies for something vague enough that the companies can't pull the "we're not adding this because you said it and we don't want to get sued" card and it actually works? Would the new tentacle styles in Splatoon Switch count?

Or I guess when the complaining is actually fruitful, like with BotW?

Yes, but the first burger store was still, okay and not worth insult or hatred.

Once other options came to be, criticism swayed business decisions.

The criticism itself is eternal.

Guess it depends on whether we're defining "picky" as "choosy" or "b****y" in this context; I assumed the latter from Swamp Sensei Swamp Sensei 's choice of words.

Another store opens up and serves without mayonnaise and onions. You also hate onions

Then you start realizing, y'know what, I hate tomatoes to.

People hate and insult all kinds of things that don't deserve it.

I know because I've been hated and insulted before.

Pretty soon a place is gonna open up just serving toasted buns and they'll realize they've gone too far.

Then a couple chains open up offering plain hamburgers and cheeseburgers and eventually all the toppings become on-disk DLC.

Attack on Titan manga editor got arrested for killing his wife.

This is... Well, horrifying.
And that's the sound of me throwing all my Attack on Waifu jokes in the trash.

I think whether or not it's an issue depends on the patrons.

Some patrons will politely ask to have the condiments not added during preparation.

Some will simply see the ingredients and just up and leave for another burger joint without a word.

Others will shout at the staff to make it the way they want it and insult them and everyone eating there all the while.

Then there's the patrons who buy it without looking at the ingredients, take one bite, spit the chewed up burger in the manager's face, and start exploding at everyone present without even explaining that they didn't want different condiments at all.

Yes, just like video games

It's not just the gamers. It's just that gamers themselves have become a less niche audience.

And that allows these people in that do stuff like want to see the manager over every little thing

Edit: And you're always going to get that one guy that asks if his burger is vegan

Edit 2: Then you get one that adds hotdogs to their menu and suddenly taco lovers get super offended and say they're being discriminated against

If it's the newbie boom that caused it, then that's because people got upset that the restaurant started catering to other people with the new recipe and want the good old days back. The only concrete pinpointable timeframes for complainers I can see is people who grew up in the 90's upset that things aren't the way they were in the good old days.

The only newbie group that I've seen that actually seems like they drifted in from the problems of the mainstream to complain is equal representation groups, which are well meaning compared to most if often succumbing to a tendency to word things a tad too condescending and stuffy to stomach. Everything else is from people who have always been there and just seem to be coming off as louder and louder for some reason.

Figures...

Any time I start to see people love something, there's another equally loud group.

I can't think of anything that wasn't a niche title that got universal praise anymore.
It's most likely because those displeased with something are more likely to announce their displeasure than those who enjoy something.

I don't know why, but it seems like it's much easier to discuss why you hate something as opposed to why you appreciate it. Just look at all the "Angry Reviewer Review's Bad Media" Youtube channels there are versus channels that try to discuss why something is so great. If you pay attention to them long enough, it gives off this impression that everything made is bad, when really that's not the case. Online you get this idea that Smash 4 is some super polarizing game and that more people play Melee, when offline, most people are enjoying Smash 4 just fine and it has a larger population than Melee.

The best option would be to put both on the menu and let people order what they want, but we all know each side would start whining about the other even existing with one going on about the trash health menu ruining the feel and the other whining that the place still sells fatty food at all.

And then it turns out that both sell horribly and they both get pulled off the menu in favor of a double cheeseburger the same as every other outlet.

I think the problem is what most of the restaurants are doing is keeping the cowboy burger on the menu but changing it so dramatically it should no longer be called a cowboy burger

And when people complain, they create a new burger, call it the "Rancher Burger" and have a different kind of BBQ sauce than the original and less pieces of bacon and saying they catered to the original audience

...Huh. Kinda similar to gaming industry. People want more collectathons or traditional RPGs, they get things they didn't want because the companies making them decide "Nobody wants it anymore" despite there being demand

Starting to get lost with the analogy slightly, but uh. . .

People tend to have a very narrow definition of what a cowboy burger is at times, to where if they so much as change the amount of seasoning slightly it's treated as a completely different burger. But other times, they really do make absurd changes to the cowboy burger. Sometimes it's different, but it can still be called a cowboy burger.

The rancher burger was a bit of a lost cause if they were trying to get people that picky back in the first place, though. There are two options they can pursue for the menu. Either bring the original burger back and don't try to pass anything off as anything else, or if that's not feasible for whatever reason, just ignore the people that left entirely and make a sheriff burger to appeal to new customers instead because there's just no pleasing the old customers with how picky they are.

Except, they're not being demanded outside of small, niche groups. If they really were, you would see them being made. Developers/Publishers test the waters by either re-releasing or remastering games. Street Fighter IV only came out because the Street Fighter II re-release before it did well enough for Capcom to be confident. Capcom tried again with Darkstalkers and that went nowhere despite people claiming that everyone wanted it. If you want certain games/genres to be revived, be sure to show the support buy purchasing these re-releases/remasters.

Yooka Laylee was moreso what I meant and stuff like Star Fox Zero. Yooka Laylee is a collectathon, Banjo Threeie never made it because MS was convinced people wanted a kart game thing instead, and Miyamoto was convinced that people wanted that tacky control scheme (Also the case with F-Zero) or Square Enix constantly changing Final Fantasy being convinced nobody wants something similar to the originals until Bravely Default

Except Yooka Laylee is an indie game, and Bravely Default is a 3DS game. I'll give you Miyamoto, but honestly, that dude seems detached from even what Nintendo wants.

Yooka Laylee was a game that got full funding in 40 minutes despite companies thinking people don't want that kind of game, and what does being a 3DS game matters? The game made SE
remember 'oh right people LIKE this'. The focus testers are the same group over and over again and the market outside of indies has been rather stale for a few years

Well ****...

I wasn't aware the system was in that bad of shape.

Xbox has the third parties but no 1st party titles. Wii U has the 1st party titles but no third parties.

PS4 is the only thing really succeeding this gen.

That said, Nintendo has the IPs and apparent third party support to make a comeback with the Switch. There's a potential light at the end of the tunnel for Nintendo.

I don't know what Microsoft has... New IPs take time.
