I personally wouldn't mind the figurines being used for greatly enhanced stage builder functionality. For example, if you were to purchase a Mario figurine, you could then access a level creation back with brick blocks, pipes, Mario enemies etc. Luigi could give access to Luigi's mansion based levels packs. Also, in order to justify the price, and to avoid people saying "it's on the disc, I should be able to use it when I buy the game," Nintendo could give the figurines internet functionality once it connects to a certain game. For example, If I were to purchase a Link figurine, it would come with no data for any game on it, but once I connect it Smash brothers, it downloads the level pack onto itself. It could do the same to access extra costumes in Hyrule Warriors, since that game has already been confirmed to have costumes for characters. Finally, since these are physical figurines, they could be share among other users to share data. However, in order to justify buying your own figure instead of just using a friends, the figures could only access data from one wii u or 3ds at a time. Such data including personal records or even character stats if they decide to put an Adventure mode with rpg elements in smash brothers. I know my ideas could be touched up a bit, but I think this is definitely a possibility for how they could work.
