I don't understand some of the complaints I've been seeing as it's very common for new fighting games to cut a significant number of veterans in exchange for more newcomers. Have people ever played them before? I think
Ultimate has spoiled gamers and made them even more ignorant than they already were to the limitations that usually pertain to this specific genre of gaming.
Also, some of the cut characters make quite a lot of sense in hindsight:
- Having Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, Shredder and April would really be pushing it, especially given that they're arguably not genuine Nickelodeon characters in the first place. If franchises like that can have five reps, where are Odie, Jon, Liz, Nermal and Arlene from Garfield? Why aren't people complaining about that?
- Squidward and Plankton have both been added, so that balances out losing Sandy and Mr Krabs being left as a stage cameo. SpongeBob is obviously their flagship franchise, but it's not just a SpongeBob fighting game.
- Hugh was a funny nod from the developers, but we now have the actual protagonist Jimmy who is obviously far more deserving of the spotlight. The game should ultimately celebrate the history of Nickelodeon, not just cater to Internet memes. Also, Nigel is still around to play the role of 'meme Dad character', so that itch is still being scratched if you really care that much about it.
- As is typical of crossover fighting games, the developers have a habit of adding far more heroes than they do villains. Sure, Azula may not be as popular as Toph within the Avatar community, but the former adds much needed balance to the series representation. The aggressions of the Fire Nation acted as the catalyst for the events of the franchise, so it would be odd not to represent that in a fighting game featuring Avatar characters.
I'm not saying that all of the cut characters make sense to me as Powdered Toast Man seemed to be a very popular choice who had become the Captain Falcon equivalent for
Nick Brawl. I also have no idea why the developers are allegedly limiting themselves with the DLC when franchises such as
The Fairly OddParents are still nowhere to be seen. However, I still see this sequel as an overall improvement thus far. Besides, I have El Tigre now and Zim has stuck around, so my personal tastes have already been catered to.
