Nintendo is gonna reveal "Jigglypuff Rests on Her Mattress And Accidentally Explodes It" at the Switch 2 direct tomorrow. The game will be such a success Jigglypuff becomes the mascot of Nintendo (and Smash).

"Buy it or this thing will come to your house in 24 hours" turned out to be an extremely effective marketing campaign.

It’s weird that I don’t even know what I’m realistically hoping for from Nintendo tomorrow beyond Smash. A new 3D Mario game would be great but it’s not something I’m eagerly anticipating for some reason. It’s kind of exciting that I have no idea what to expect. It’s going to be hard for anything to beat Marvel: Cosmic Invasion for me but I’m still really looking forward to seeing whatever they show.

…I dunno man. A giant character in Smash does sound pretty cool, but I think there might be a problem with balancing that character with the rest of the roster.
You're correct, Iron Giant was temporally disabled a bunch of times because they had trouble balancing him in MVs. However, Sakurai sometimes likes to do experimental stuff, i don't think Rathalos is likely mind you, just something i could see Sakurai trying.

What does everyone think the chances are of seeing whatever the first project is for Chrono Trigger in tomorrow’s Direct? If you haven’t heard, Square-Enix announced they have multiple projects in the works in celebration of Chrono Trigger’s 30th anniversary but haven’t revealed what they are yet. If they do reveal something substantial, how much do you think that might help a Chrono Trigger character’s chances for Smash 6 DLC?
Probably it does help, but i do think Chrono Trigeer is popular on it's own to get in regardless, i think. I'm not so sure about the chances, it's definitely posible, but he has to compete with characters like 2B probably and peraphs Sepiroth if he gets cuts from base game.

I'm just thinking ports of Atlus's two most recent games that skipped the Switch 1

After trying to convince my friend to try Persona for over 15 years, he finally bought Persona 5 Royal and he’s considering 3 reload. He was watching random video game reviews and was really interested in Soul Hackers and absolutely loved it. He said it’s the best turn based battle system he’s ever played. I haven’t actually played that one myself yet but I watched him play it a bit. I told him if he loves Soul Hackers, he’d probably love Persona and Metaphor. I think he was put off by the whole calendar system but it’s really not bad once you get used to it. I convinced him to buy Tales of Berseria and Arise too. He’s spent most of his gaming life just playing Madden and other sports games but I know he lived Final Fantasy X and Chrono Cross when they came out.

I know you're getting tired of the debate so I won't press too hard on this, but I wanted to talk about these two points.

:pikachu64: :jigglypuff64: :mewtwomelee: :pichumelee: all happened before we got the actual playable character :pt: . And before the "technical difficulties" argument comes in, they could have just had the Trainer on the battlefield himself while calling out Pokémon to attack for his specials if they were deadset on having "the playable character" over the Pokémon themselves.
How do we know that even having the PT behind in the background as a visual feature was feasible? We don't have anything similar to that in the previous games happening to that extent, and gleaning Sourcegaming we lack any details from Sakurai or otherwise to indicate it could've happened. On top of that, 64 is still the most technically limited of its family and Melee had infamous development limitations with its short development, so even if it was an idea Sakurai could've wanted to do he may just not have had the chance to do it with what he had on hand.

The thing with this point is that it may be playing off of speculation to at least some extent.

If Sans can be seen as the unironic Undertale pick of choice over The Human/Frisk or Monokuma the choice for Danganronpa over someone like Makoto Naegi, or Freddy Fazbear over the Night Guard for FNAF, or hell, the titular Diablo himself over any playable protagonist, I really don't see why we have to be all freaky over the idea of the Hunter getting passed over for a Monster/Felyne or Tarnished passed over for Malenia or Chosen Undead passed over for Solaire (who like Sans was generally seen as THE choice, especially very early in Ultimate's speculation scene), etc. just because "it's the playable character". If a legitimately strong case can be made for someone else, it shouldn't be a problem.
As for people getting 'freaky' over Hunter, it's because that's the one people want. If you look up polls like Sourcegaming, Hunter is the one that tops the list for the franchise, not the Rathalos, not even the Palico, the Hunter is the choice of both its playerbase and the one that interacts with Smash. It's not even the case of it being seen as the only option, that MvC3 quote and their relative lack of presence in crossovers has existed for over a decade, so MH fans have a reason to consider other options but the Hunter is the one they push for. That puts them more along the lines of Hero then it does Frisk.

On top of that, no one likes seeing their character dismissed by points like 'well the franchise is about monster, so we should get a monster'. It's the same point we've seen with examples like Metroid (we don't need Ridley/Dark Samus, it's all about isolation) or Minecraft (it's all about interacting with the world, so we don't need Steve), and just like how fans of those particular characters did not care for and argued against those points, so do fans of the Hunter.

I can say that any video game character(s) that are highly popular, have history, and/or requests are supported by fans all have a fair shot. Now, it is not a guarantee that one will get in since various factors are in play.

If you do bet all on one character and don't have room for other possibilities, then you end up looking like a fool once it ends or confirmation that he/she isn't a fighter.

Yup, that’s why I have well over 50 characters I’d be really hyped to see. Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t get any of them at all. Still, even the character wasn’t on my personal most wanted list, I can still have a lot of fun playing them in Smash like Terry and Kazuya.

I think the main thing about this is that favoring playable characters doesn't necessarily mean that they always go for them above other options. There are some cases where it makes more sense not to go with the player, or sometimes the mascot isn't the player, and uh..."skips the line" for lack of a better phrase.

Most of the reasoning behind each choices popularity is pretty easily explained. People talk about Sans over Frisk because the former is a mascot, and the latter is not only an avatar...kinda, but have a very nebulous mechanic attached that would be insanely difficult to translate to Super Smash Bros. Monokuma similarly is also a mascot, appears in the series more often, is more easily envisioned as a fighter, and is up against a milktoast protagonist to boot. The popularity contest really isn't fair here. Freddy over Night Guard is no contest. He's the mascot for one, but you're also pitting him against a character who has no abilities, character model, or even a cannon design in the games other than the pixelated sprite he has in Sister Location. You'd get much farther trying to advocate for a character like Gregory, though he would likely also come with at least a version of Freddy. Solaire over Chosen Undead I think is just a case of people not wanting an avatar.

I can't really comment on Diablo or Elden Ring since I know nothing about the characters.
I can't comment on Elden ring, but Diablo is a very similar case to other franchise you talked about. In every Diablo games, you can customize your avatar and pick a classes. In Diablo, the main character doesn't have a design that fits all classes similar to Dragonborn in Skyrim. Instead, each classes have a basic design which can be customize by the players. This makes it hard to support any Diablo main characters, because there's a plethora of them (because each games got different classes and classes design). Also while each classes has some "signatures" powers, because of the customisation and the big skill tree in those games every players will play the game with different moveset, which makes it hard to translate in Smash because there's so many stuff to work with. Which classes would Smash represent? Based on which games? Which skills would be represented? What design?

On the other hand, the titular Diablo is the main antagonist of the franchise. He appeared in every game except 4. While is design is updated through games, he doesn't change that much, it's always the same character. He also have unique powers that could work in Smash: he can throw fire and lightning, teleport, fight using his horns or use necromancy to summon other monsters or attack with bones. This is why people will raly way more behind Diablo than the protagonist classes of each games.

Either way, my general thoughts on if franchise should be rep with the playable characters or not is that it's just a case by case basis. I think a lot of franchise in Smash naturally have a playable characters that are both popular and work well in the game. Like, there's really no reason to priorise Peach over Mario or some big angels demons instead of Bayonetta herself. But there's some context where it would make sense to go for something else, like I doubt that if Danganronpa gets into Smash they'll go with Makoto before Monokuma. Some franchise like Mortal kombat, people will rally way more Scorpion than the actual main character, Liu Kang. And then there's franchise with no main characters like Rhythm heaven which makes it hard to rally behind someone. But for most franchise the main character just make the most sense, like Astral chain would be rep by Akira, Golden sun by Isaac etc.

The only thing I will address because I'm tired and don't really feel like going much further with the topic is the idea of "Smash strongly favors the playable characters" bit feels disingenuous as an argument because it's only argued in some cases but not others.
I do think the series tends to favor the playable characters, but it’s not some unbreakable rule like people make it out to be. Take Elden Ring for example—Sakurai could easily pick Malenia over the main character. I really think the fanbase needs to stop being so rigid about following patterns and rules. It's like that one person on another forum who kept insisting that indie characters will never be playable in a future game just because they weren’t in Ultimate. Just because something didn’t happen before doesn’t mean it’s impossible in the future.

Is there any fan rule that hasn’t been debunked?
Perkilator already answered your question, but personally, I think fan-made "rules" are pretty silly. They made sense back in Brawl and Smash 4 because those were different times, but in 2025, after Ultimate, they just feel silly. The only real rule we can rely on is that non-video game characters won’t join the battle. That’s it.

It’s going to be hard to avoid spoilers tomorrow. I work until 3:30 PM every day so I’m going to have to stay off the internet until I get out. I know I probably should be doing that anyways but that’s no fun lol.
Whenever I know I'm going to miss an important Direct, I go to the Nintendo website the day before, visit the Direct page, and leave my computer in rest mode. That way, when I come back, I don’t have to worry about being spoiled— all I need to do is refresh the page.
Maybe i'm boring, but those days i honestly prefer watching directs after they finish airing, that way i can skip the parts im not interested in, which is a 60 minute direct so i'm sure there will be some.

Me neither, it could be anything, i'm hoping for Mario Kart 9 news at very least. But honestly, i'm hoping for a Smash reveal the most, i want to put the Port vs New Game deebate to rest as well.
If Nintendo reveals a new IP with characters, then we'll at least have some new characters to talk about, even through they'll probably be DLC, if they get in at all. Kinda like what happened with ARMS back in pre-ultimate days.

Now thinking about it, do you think spirits will stick around or will be changed into another collectable version other than trophies?
I think we’ll see trophies return, or possibly a new collectible like Smash Cards. Personally, I feel that Spirits are unlikely to return, as they seem more like an Ultimate-specific feature. Spirits worked well within the context of World of Light, but "EiH" did sacrifice certain features like Trophies.

Since we might not get something like EiH or the hundreds of stages we had in Ultimate, the issue of sacrificing features might not be as big of a concern. It’s possible that they’ll go back to trophies or introduce something entirely new, like Smash Cards.

I am curious if they’ll ever break the gaming origin rule by including a character from outside media of a gaming IP. Like if they added Captain N, Ash Ketchum, Lucy MacLean, Longclaw, Mel Medarda, or something similar. I think they technically already broke that rule with R.O.B. since it’s a gaming peripheral and not an in-game character.

Ash Ketchum should honestly be a skin or some sort of clone of Pokemon Trainer.

I wasn't even talking about Dixie Kong here? My post in Unpopular Opinions was about Dixie as a clone, this one is about Diddy's moveset having all his canon abilities as is and there being no missed gaps in terms of "faithful representation" even though people say there is and/or he's treated as "generic monkey".
There's more that could've been done. There are various DK64 abilities that could've been represented. Simian Slam, Chimpy Charge, Guitar Guizap, the Orange Grenades for example, and his tail based attacks.

Not that those necessarily would be better options, but still.

But yeah I guess the fault is on me there. Sorry.

I hope Nintendo either moves away from the port-and-remake-centric stuff that's dominated the Switch entirely and takes some risks on new IP, new takes on old IP, etc - or at the very least, I feel as if there's a lot of pockets of their back catalog that could genuinely use a nice port or collection or translation.

Collections / translations / etc for Custom Robo, Starfy, etc. Even stupid stuff like Virtual Boy on NSO - I know they don't like to acknowledge it but there's good games trapped on that thing and you could feasibly have the entire library minus Virtual Lab available for people to play.

I guess what I mean is - start porting / rereleasing stuff that never went worldwide or whatever rather than remaking games that could easily go on NSO in their original state.

I wasn't referring to the Rathalos Armor set, since I would consider that to be connected to Rathalos, but rather, the Hunter's Helm and Hunter's Mail Mii costume.
1743522240814.png

Not gonna lie I forgot these were a thing. Yeah, I beleive the Hunter's Gear is just early-game gear from before you have monster parts to make stuff with. That's pretty unambiguously the Hunter. So even if there aren't Spirits, the Hunters are represented in some form.
I think the main thing about this is that favoring playable characters doesn't necessarily mean that they always go for them above other options. As far as why people fixate on the Monster Hunter. I'm not entirely sure. They are an avatar, which usually means they're the least popular idea, but maybe they're kind of seen as the only idea like Steve was for Minecraft. The hunter has a ton of moveset potential, and is easy to conceptualize, the monsters are huge and hard or impossible to downsize for a fighter. There's the idea of them adding a Felyne, but it's reletively new, and proposed after the concept of the hunter has taken hold.

And this is just a personal thing, but the idea of adding the Felyne instead of the hunter feels weird to me since, to me, someone who hasn't played the games, the hunter just feels like a better choice, and would feel better to play, even if the Felyne would technically be more interesting since they'd be a shorty with heavy weapons. It's also just...why pick Felyne when there's nothing wrong with Monster Hunter? It feels kinda arbitrary. I'll accept it if it's what ends up happening, but conceptually, it just feels kinda weird.
Adding to the "Smash favors the playable characters" thing, when you focus solely on the fighters we already have, there's a couple grey areas but I don't think there's anything too rule-bending? The most glaring exception is Pokemon, but you do play as the Pokemon themselves in combat, issuing commands that they carry out. So while Pikachu isn't the player character, you can still control him to some degree, so it's not entirely unprecedented. ROB also an exception; He's a periphal who inputs commands for you, so technically he's the opposite of a playable character. I don't know if he even shows up in his games. He's not just a mascot, he's a piece of hardware, which is a very unique situation in the context of Smash.

Rex is the player character of Xenoblade 2 and not Pyra and Mythra, but they do fight as a team. Also we know for certain that Sakurai wanted Rex originally, but ran into technical difficulties (Probably exacerbated by the DLC being made by a skeleton team and having to port over their XC2 models). Similarly, Slime was a Plan B for if Hero was off-limits.

So, Smash doesn't always choose the primary player character, but it's undeniable that they have a strong bias towards playable characters. This is even if they have mascots, like how we got Villager before Tom Nook or Isabelle, Joker over Morgana, and the aforementioned Hero over Slime. And as I've said, Pikachu is a notable exception, but unlike the other examples given, he's still controllable to some degree. So while exceptions are possible, precidence leans towards playable characters, more often than not.

For the examples given? I will say there's a possibility we get a Danganronpa MC over Monokuma, given the precedence, but my knowledge of the series is slim and I can't say much more than that. With Dark Souls and Elden Ring, the Chosen Undead and Tarnished are still discussed quite often. The most beloved NPCs and bosses are worth noting, but we shouldn't discount the avatars entirely. Sans is a unique case because of how virally popular he is, and like Smash Puppy said, Frisk has some logistic issues in representing the "Spare" mechanic (Though like with Dangan, I don't know enough to give a real input on that). Same with Diablo. And like you said, we don't really see the FNAF player character, so it's hard to do anything with that.

So to circle back around to Monster Hunter, I won't say it's the only shot we have, but I disagree with people acting like they're definitely off the table. The Hunter's lack of appearance in other media is notable, yes, and MvCI is the sole exception, yes. However, the fact there's an exception at all proves there isn't a hard rule against Hunters being in crossovers. The old MvC3 interview is still passed around, but we've already established that's contradicted by MvCI, and any rumors surrounding that game are only rumors and shouldn't be taken as fact.

Is there a chance we'll have to settle for Palico instead? Yes, I'll admit that. They've been used in crossovers way more than the Hunters, so even if Smash trends towards player characters, we shouldn't count them out entirely. But on that same note, there's no definitive hard rule against the Hunters being playable either, and we shouldn't discount them because of that, especially when Smash trends towards whoever's playable (Trends, of course, not only players). (and I've already gone over the logistic issues of adding a whale-sized dragon...)

It's kinda awkward for me, my wishlist has slowly but surely been taken care of over the course of the past 18 years or so from Sonic to Megaman to Sora that at this point my list of characters i want in smash is pretty much made up of unlikely characters

I am guessing I was wrong, huh? No biggie, though. I just never played Monster Hunter before.

Still, even with different combinations, and if they went with that, do you all really think he could work the same way Ridley in Ultimate did?

I wouldn’t mind playing as big Rathalos, though.

Tiny Rathalos is a thing that exists, so the "too big" argument might not be applicable

Rathalos seems cool. Why not? If they could make it work, that would be awesome.

However, they'd better size up Ridley accordingly too. And I hope they finally can get down how a dragon is supposed to play like. Breathing fire while being airborne and airborne agility seems to have been vital parts they missed with both Charizard and Ridley.

Which is why am honestly doubting they could pull this off.

It's very likely the ports and remakes were done so the Switch could actually get a decent influx of games leading up to the actually new, original stuff that's being cooked by Nintendo's various divisions and studios.

It was likely either that or two years of drought

As for people getting 'freaky' over Hunter, it's because that's the one people want. If you look up polls like Sourcegaming, Hunter is the one that tops the list for the franchise, not the Rathalos, not even the Palico, the Hunter is the choice of both its playerbase and the one that interacts with Smash.

Don't want to drag out the debate for too long, but this is an important point and I wanted to respond. With many of the supported exceptions to the usual player characters - Sans, Freddy, Monokuma - It's because they're just that iconic and popular, even if they're not playable. But like you mentioned, the Monster Hunters aren't overshadowed in popularity by Rathalos or the Palico; They're still the dominant figure in discussions, despite their lack of presence in crossovers compared to other candidates. The biggest pushback against them is not that they're unpopular, per se, but because people feel they wouldn't, or even can't be in a fighting game.

I am guessing I was wrong, huh? No biggie, though. I just never played Monster Hunter before.

Still, even with different combinations, and if they went with that, do you all really think he could work the same way Ridley in Ultimate did?

I wouldn’t mind playing as big Rathalos, though.
It's not a big deal, it's just funny as a Monster Hunter player because there are so many Rathalos variants. We have the Azure Rathalos subspecies, the Silver Rathalos rare species, the Dreadking Rathalos Deviant form, the altered Apex Rathalos, the new variant seen in Monster Hunter Wilds that I can't elaborate on because of spoilers, and multiple insanely strong forms seen only in Frontiers. And that's not getting into Rathian, the female form of the species.

Like I've said before, the problem isn't the lack of potential, it's that Rathalos is the size of a whale and it's hard to balance both the imposing size and the horizontal build.

And no, Stories is a spinoff, it doesn't count.

In all fairness, the entire design behind Pokemon Trainer kinda forces Charizard to be slow and clunky.

The entire point is that you have a small but agile Pokemon followed by subsequently bigger and stronger yet slower Pokemon.

If Charizard had the proper agility he could have, Ivysaur and Squirtle would have no reason to be picked and instead hold back Trainer as a whole.

No excuses for Ridley though.

I see what you mean. Still, I was more worried about the proportions than actual size, which is why I did the Ridley comparison, as Ridley had that issue.

Do you think we’ll have Stage Builder at launch or will they add it later like Ultimate did? In either case, I’m hoping for a lot of improvements. I really enjoyed what we had in Ultimate but I feel there’s still so much untapped potential. The mouse feature could make the mode a lot easier to use.

I will say, I do much prefer Jinx’s and Vi’s Arcane designs to their default League counterparts. I feel like their new designs just show off so much more personality. Nothing really against their game designs and they do make sense as the default but I think Arcane’s just go a step further. I do prefer game Warwick to his Arcane design though.

On a similar subject, if some of your most wanted characters have multiple designs from different games, are there any you’d be much more excited to see in particular? For example, I’d love the Battlemaniacs versions of the Battletoads, Zero’s MMX design, Sub-Zero’s UMK3 design and Impa’s Hyrule Warriors design.
King Boo’s Luigi’s Mansion look
Scorpion’s Mortal Kombat 9 look
DJ Octavio Splatoon 1 look
Elma Xenoblade Alien look
