I just found out that you can "ledge cancel" Wolf's side special when going back toward the stage. If you use it at the edge of the stage and slightly above he will semi-catch the ledge canceling the movement and allowing you to do something else.

The first time I did it was on accident while using it to recover and I did two Side Specials. At first I wondered if it could be used twice normally, like Pikachu's Up Special. But it cannot without ledge canceling. I test it out a little and I managed to cancel into a Up Air, which leads me to believe you can do pretty much any attack out of it almost instantly.

If I might be so speculative, it sounds like the same recovery mechanic is at work in the following video:

Ledge Grab Cancel (Samus Up-B)

Does it seem like this could be applied to many characters' recoveries, where edge-grabbing is used to interrupt a move, without actually grabbing the edge?

Yes, that does look a lot like what I did with Wolf (I'll have videos up later).

From my further observations it looks like Wolf actually "teleports" onto the ledge of the stage, lands, then "teleports" back off and falls. This would explain why he gets his jump back.

Ah sweet. I've seen this happen with falco too where I was slightly above the ledge. He like pops down then is standing on the level. Seems like a lot of interesting things can be done with the new ledge grab.

I already posted about it. Check the Ledge Glitch in my guide.
