(I haven't played Smash 64, but when and if I get it I plan to use Jigglypuff)

When I intially played Melee I took a liking to Kirby, and I found myself using him often. When Brawl came around, I grew even more fond of him during the SSE, and since then Kirby became my Melee main and my Brawl secondary. I took a liking to King Dedede's personality(and the fact that he has a huge hammer) after seeing him in the SSE, and I was surprised and happy to see him in Brawl after observing his trophy and reading about him in Melee. All three Kirby characters in Brawl have become some of my all time favorite characters. Later, when I started to try out other characters more and did some more research on Melee, I learned that Kirby wasn't exactly a good character....still, he remains one of my main, though I now commonly use Marth, Samus and Mewtwo as well.

I've always enjoyed the AC games, and to be honest, I actually grow very fond of the villagers that move to my town, and I always saw a little of myself in the Villager in the AC games. (that changed when the memes came out......) I was very pleased and surprised to see him in SSB4, and I've already fallen in love with his moveset. He's definitely going to be one of my mains this time around, though I've grown to fond of King Dedede to let him go, so he'll at least be ONE of my mains once again in this game, perhaps not the one I use the most.

I try to get a new main every game.

On the 64, I picked up Captain Falcon.
In Melee I picked up Mewtwo, Sheik, Marth, and Fox.
In Brawl, I picked up Bowser, Wolf, and ROB.

Even though I still go back to Marth a lot. :p

I started liking villager when the Memes came. I actually just finished writing him a song in a different thread, I will add it soon. You know what? Screw it, I will main Villager, I see a little bit of him in me too! His Ax will most likely be blunt, so I suppose you could bludgeon the skulls of Nintendo characters?

I feel obligated to also respond to this thread with "G&W Bair is the best." Because it is. It is why I named myself after it.

Anyway, there is nothing unorthodox or wrong with character loyalty, nor is this the case with jumping characters between games. I've traditionally considered :pikachu2:my "core main"/go-to character since I main him in 64, Melee, and Project M. However, I can't stand playing him in Brawl, and in that game, I used :lucario: and :pt:until I stopped playing it. The way that characters play changes so much with each game that they hardly feel the same as they did in the game prior, so it's not hard for me to abandon a main; I'd have to relearn them like any other character anyway. I generally am able to play most, if not all characters, with some degree of competency, though. When it comes to picking a main, I weigh both playstyle and my own personal connection to the character. I like :sonic: as a character, for example, but I find him rather boring to play as, and his playstyle just really isn't my type.

I also tend to change up my mains since each game adds more characters that I actually like and want to play as. Back when Brawl came out, the only characters I actually cared about were newcomers. As for Smash 4, well, Villager looks awesome. His playstyle seems really fun and I love the Animal Crossing series, so he's a very likely main.

Lol, the memes are what's going to make the Villager awesome! You should definitely sing that song while fighting someone though :p. I personally plan on terrifying my opponent by creepily reciting some of the memes.

If they have the same taunt system, I will use a few of those lines. Haha. I might also have some more time to come up with some better ones! The glory of Villager, Smash 4 is going to be really fun.

I wonder if Smash 4 online will have voice chat? That would make trolling a whole lot easier :troll:.

When I first played 64 and Melee I only used characters I knew. (Which was mainly Mario,Pokemon,Kirby and Zelda)
But when Brawl came out I started to use characters I wasn't familiar with and most of my mains were from franchises I had never played/never heard about.
So now as it stands my mains for each game are:
64: Luigi,Yoshi and Kirby
Melee: Yoshi,Mewtwo,Jigglypuff,Bowser and Young Link
Brawl: Lucas,Lucario,Toon Link,R.O.B and DeDeDe

64: :samus64:
Melee: :jigglypuffmelee: -> :falconmelee:
Brawl: :metaknight:->:warioc:->:falcon:->:metaknight:

So yeah, I guess I unintentionally change mains each game. Though I still play Wario, Falcon, Jiggs and Samus as alts in Brawl (and also Ike), so it's not like I ever abandon my old mains. I don't foresee myself switching out Meta Knight in Smash 4 though, since he's my second favorite Nintendo character, only way he gets booted off is if Ridley makes it in.

EDIT:
Project M: :metaknight::ivysaur:

Going to put:samus2:on there too once 3.0 releases, probably bumping Ivysaur down to alt-level. I also alt Falcon, Ike and Jigglypuff. Not too keen on what they did with Wario though.

I do try and pick a new main every game, especially a newcomer character and a character I personally like.
Though it has always been consistent with :ness2:, :mewtwopm: and :toonlink: for each game of the series respectively.
I'm probably going to main Villager if
or any other newcomer I'd like to see doesn't make it in. :ness2:, :mewtwopm: and :toonlink: would all become my secondaries then. (assuming they all return which I'm fairly sure they will. Toon Link is back at least, so only Ness and Mewtwo to go.)

I do play as many different characters regularly though. Gotta keep things fresh you know, it does get a bit boring if you always play as the same character.

N64 Mains: :pikachu64: & :dk64:

Pikachu fitted my playstyle much better though. But back in the day, some people would argue I was much better with DK. Mostly cause I could time my grabs very well with him.

Melee Mains: :pikachumelee: -> :mewtwomelee: -> :dkmelee: -> :jigglypuffmelee: & :ganondorfmelee: & :marthmelee: & :sheikmelee: -> :dkmelee: & :mewtwomelee: + :marthmelee: & :sheikmelee:

Melee is a lot more difficult. Innitially, I wanted to main Pikachu again. But his new B Air, Forward Air being worse, Thunder being seemingly less powerful, D Air not being nearly as strong as well as far less powerful throws made me prefer Mewtwo. And for the longest time, I mained Mewtwo. Then in my late teens, I discovered Smashboards and saw some awesome combos on Fox & Falco by Captain Jack which got me hyped to try DK out. Mained DK for a long time to, till I couldn't stand losing to Top Tiers anymore so I tried out Jiggsm Ganondorf, Marth and Sheik. Can still play them all decently, but recently I went: '**** it, DK and Mewtwo are awesome' so they're my bread & butter again. Still would like to improve my Marth and Sheik though.

Melee secondaries: :linkmelee: :mariomelee: :samusmelee:

Just liked these characters far more than their N64 counterparts. And I still got some decent skill with them, even though as Samus I can't super wavedash which doesn't make me play as her often. Link and Mario are quite simple characters, and yes, I do prefer vanilla Mario over Dr.Mario. U Air combos son!
Brawl Mains: :diddy:

Love at first sight. And my LONG awaited favorite Nintendo character finally became playable. With a moveset I loved, and Top Tier placement, what else could I ask for? Diddy is easily the most fun character in Brawl, and I feel he has the most potential. He takes a lot of skill to, which is something I like. Even if I haven't played Smash for a long time now (broken Brawl disk), I still bet I could give quite some people a run for their money with Diddy.

In Brawl I also had quite some secondaries though: :dk2: > :pikachu2::marth::ike::link2::ganondorf::sheik::ness2::toonlink::pt::falco::samus2:

Brawl DK is what comes most closest to a 'true secondary'. All the other characters I play for fun, but am deceptional skillful with all of them. I love how much easier it is as DK compared to 95% of the cast to take stocks. Same principle with Ike and Ganondorf, but less so cause they feel more clumsy. Loved Pikachu's new style in Brawl to, far more prefered to Melee's Pika. Same with Ness, who I really became to love since Brawl.

Future mains in Project M: :diddy: & :dk2: & :mewtwopm:

From what I saw, these characters will suit me fine. And finally, I get to play Diddy, the best version of DK, and a heavily improved Mewtwo. Diddy has few players who are truely loyal to him, so that's a big challenge. Same with Mewtwo, who's gonna be new in 3.0. Will probably focus most on Diddy however.

Future Projet M secondaries: :ike: :link2: :samus2: :charizard: :roypm: :ness2: :marth:

Love the buffs I've seen on Ike, Link, Ness, Samus and Roy. Love how Charizard is selectable on his own and his moveset and playstyle seem far more true to the character. Marth is there cause Melee. Pikachu isn't here however since Melee Pikachu doesn't sit well with me.

Smash 4 though? Diddy will most likely be my main again. DK secondary. Pikachu also if his playstyle suits me well. Samus, Link and Marth also all have my interesst. And Ike and Mewtwo will become DK-like secondaries if they return for sure. Still, Diddy will always be my first pick!

I sucked at 64. The only character I did okay with was Yoshi. So I guess it was my main.

Melee... I don't know why since I don't particularly like either series, but Zelda and Roy were my favorites. I just did well with them. I bet I'd have still played Roy were he in Brawl.. Though I didn't play much Zelda for one reason or another. She's not too different either so I'm not sure why.

Brawl though gave me some of the best characters. Between Ivysaur, Lucas, Olimar and ROB, I was in heaven. All absolutely amazing and I hope they're all back (Obv Olimar is) for Smash 4. Preferably the PM version of Ivy though lol

64- Samus

Melee- If I ever play Melee I'd main Mewtwo in a heartbeat.

Brawl- I was around the place, MK, PKMN Trainer, but I stayed with Lucario. I've stuck with Lucario since.

SSB4- Currently, Mega Man and/or Wii Fit Trainer.

I don't main so much as I have a list of character I won't touch with a 10 foot smash pole and rotate the others.

Smash 64: I struggled with finding "my" character, but eventually wound up with :foxmelee:

Melee: I tried :foxmelee:, but hated him, so I went to :linkmelee: for a while, then eventually went back to :foxmelee:, who stayed my main.

Brawl: I tried :foxmelee:, but hated him, so I went to :ike: for a while, then eventually went back to :foxmelee:, who stayed my main.

Based on my trend, I can't imagine any other outcome than this:

Smash 4: I'll try :foxmelee: but hate him, so I'll play Chrom/Isaac/Megaman/etc, then eventually I'll go back to :foxmelee:, who will stay my main.

...I really don't see any other possible outcome.

Still up Peach's dress.
Smash 64: :yoshi64: Yoshi. Before hand I wanted to play Pikachu, but a friend claimed him as his main, so I wanted Luigi who was the only Mario character I liked at that time, but he hadn't unlocked him. I settled for Yoshi.

Melee: :yoshimelee:

Brawl: :yoshi2:

Now I can't imagine myself maining anyone BUT Yoshi...although had SSB4 included a certain mushroom man, I would of reconsidered.

My sister on the other hand, who started in Melee, has had to change repeatedly:

The sister:

Melee: :pichumelee:

Brawl: :ike:

Now with Ike possibly out(POSSIBLY), she's worried there won't be anyone in Smash 4 she actually likes. Uh oh!

I'm not obsessed with competitiveness, so i choose characters that I actually like. Which is why I play everyone. But i can so far see myself playing Villager and MM a lot.

My main has been and always will be Luigi in every single game. I just can't replace my favorite character!

Though, my secondaries often shift.
64: Currently it's Captain Falcon and Pikachu, but I still love playing as Donkey Kong, Mario, and Kirby.
Melee: Currently it's Ganondorf and Pikachu, but I enjoy playing as Captain Falcon and Mario.
Brawl: This is the only game where I have a second main and that character is Meta Knight; I have been playing as him since Brawl's release. My secondary is currently Pikachu, but I have also played as Link, Wario, Kirby, and Falco a lot before.

For SSB4, my main is obviously still Luigi, I will also main Meta Knight, and Pikachu will remain my secondary. However, I will definitely play as other characters and see if I want to main them. I would main Little Mac in an instant (if he's confirmed) and I will definitely try out the new Bowser, hope that Wario got overhauled, and play as Mega Man since he looks like a fun character.

64 - Played a little of everyone, mostly Fox, I've always thought he was a cool character

Melee - Same thing, and started using Peach because I want to kick ass with her.

Brawl - Olimar (huge pikmin fan) Diddy (one of my favorite Nintendo characters) Fox some more. I don't really have a main in Brawl as I've played it so much I just learned how to use most of the roster pretty well.

WiiU/DS - Fox, Olimar, WFT, Megaman and the inevitable Waluigi :3

In 64, my original main was :luigi64:, but then changed to a mixture of :falcon64:, :link64:, & :mario64:.

In Melee, the only main I had was :linkmelee:. With :ganondorfmelee:, & :drmario: once in a while. But that was years ago when I actually played Melee. (Or could play Melee that is. My GCN controllers have died since then.)
Brawl, however, gave me a multitude of characters to use and try out. My current mains are :warioc:, :marth:, & :luigi2:.

I'm sure in this one, Marth and Luigi will stay "Up-There" for me because I love them so much in Brawl, but I'm willing to go to new characters to see what they have to offer.

Well duh, in 64 you want to back Utilt moar.
Your posts make so much more sense now that I've realized that the tone of voice with which you say "moar" is how you convey meaning and terms like "Utilt" and "Bair" are just punctuation. Bair is the period of your language of course.

Now that I know what you're saying, I'm really surprised you expect En Garde from Donkey Kong Country to even be in the game. It'll be pretty difficult to main him if he isn't.

I can play about half the roster in 64 pretty well, but I really liked playing as Jigglypuff and C. Falcon. I hated playing Fox, Link, and Samus with a passion, though.

Melee did a few things that made me like Falcon less and Jiggs more (I mean the knee is great and all but Nair is gone.) Though, Mario got even better with Doc. After Brawl came out, I started playing as Mewtwo more often. Along with the characters I hated playing as in 64, Ganondorf, Zelda, and Sheik also disagreed with my play style.

Brawl has Wario. Wario is the only character I really liked in Brawl because Jigg's Rest is terrible now and his move set really compensates well for that. Plus, Wario is one of my favorite Nintendo characters. That's a plus. I also gave Game & Watch a shot, and ended up being very good with him. Same goes for Dedede and Luigi (don't have to learn to wavedash to be good :D). Sonic, Snake, and Diddy I can't play (along with the aforementioned.)

I discovered Project M after looking for a mod that made Wario more like his Wario Land incarnation. I immediately mained him, alongside Jigglypuff (despite her inferiority to most of the roster.) Lately, I've been experimenting with Marth in all the games he's in.

In Smash 4, I'm hoping Wario and Jigglypuff return, and as for the already revealed cast, I want to try to main Marth, Bowser, Mega Man (childhood want) and maybe Mario, but I hate FLUDD so probably Luigi.

This is all as of recent, because when I was younger and played Smash, nothing mattered because to me Luigi was the greatest thing ever and anyone who challenged that felt the mighty wrath of what Luigi could do on the Battlefield.

I sucked at Luigi.

Probably. If Little Mac, K. Rool or Takamaru are in the game I don't care what they play like, and would give them all an incredible amount of work towards maining.

Otherwise, Mega Man looks worthwhile to try to main, and a character I really like, and could get into. Otherwise I might stick to Diddy/Olimar, barring extreme changes to other vets or newcomers I haven't thought of. But usually I go for a new main every game.

For 64 and Melee, I always pretty much went with :mario2:. In Brawl I played him a bit, but I went with :sonic: as I like him as a character more and I enjoyed his playstyle although majorly flawed. For Smash 4 I intend to keep playing :sonic: but really I want to try to main Mega Man or Paper Mario (if it was possible for him to be in the game)

Characters change from game to game, for better or worse. For example, in 64 Falcon had a bunch of different attacks from his Melee counterpart, and he is ten times more fun in Melee because of the knee and much more, so of course it would make sense to main Falcon in Melee even if you didn't in 64.

Then there's characters like Jigglypuff who kick butt in Melee, but lacks the same kind of charm with Brawl physics, so it's understandable to replace Jigglypuff as a main in that case too.

Sometimes people just need a change of pace too, it can be boring to play the same character all the time, and it just so happens to be a veteran they find a lot of fun in.

Brawl came out when I was a wee middle schooler so of course I 'mained' :kirby2: and :pikachu2: and did the standard 5 jumps --> Rock, rinse and repeat, as for Pikachu, I thought if I razzled and dazzled my oppoents via hitting them twice with quick attack, I'd get victory in no time. Never spammed thunder, thank god.

As the years passed I found myself getting more diverse with secondaries like :ness2: and :sheik: along with my main crew, the :popo: and :toonlink: .
Eventually I realized, after finding out I kicked ass with :squirtle: and :pit: , that I had too many secondaries and no true strong main, so I honed my IC skills as well as TL with only Ness as my backup.

Come Smash 4, I feel the Villiager is a bit overhyped and likely won't meet everyone's expectations (that isn't to say I'm not excited for him though, he looks crazy good), I'm just wary because everyone was getting creamed over Sonic and he doesn't have too much going for him with his like, 2 kill moves and such.
I'm not opposed to maining Pit/Ness/Toon Link should IC's not make the cut (which seems likely *sobs)

Because changes to the character, well in certain cases anyway.

I use Yoshi in 64, mostly because of his quirky playstyle. However in 64 every character is close to being on equal grounds with each other.

Then we get to Melee, where Yoshi is not so great, plus he feels different from his 64 incarnation (to me at least) and couldn't play him quite as comfortably. However Peach had a bit of a quirky playstyle to her thanks to levitate and she felt a lot more comfortable to play as in Melee.

The we have Brawl where Peach got quite a few nerfs and became uncomfortable in Brawl. Although not be quirky, I did find myself enjoying Falco's play style in Brawl and to be extremely comfortable. It really just comes down to comfort, just because your old main was in the older game doesn't necessarily mean they are the quite the same in a newer game. As changes to characters have always been a thing with new fighting games, at least as far as I know.

Aight, cool

To clarify I was not condemning the act of switching mains, just curious as to why some of y'all jump ship from your previous favorite. I personally get attached to the character I play most to the point of no return, both on a cosmetic and mechanical level. It's like that for me with almost every game, can't say I'm entirely sure why. Bowser is so much different in Brawl than he was in Melee, but I can't help but love the big guy regardless.

Thanks for the replies guyz

Though I started playing the game series with Melee, I wasn't aware of the concept of mains until Brawl. And after a while of playing different characters, I determined my six mains. Hey, if you can have 6 Pokemon on your team, why not 6 mains?

Brawl Mains: :mario2: :luigi2: :bowser2: :wario: :diddy: :gw:
Secondaries: :yoshi2: :dk2::ness2:
"Joke" Character: :peach: (in her Daisy palette)
Guest Mains: :snake: :sonic:

The Mario series is my 2nd favorite game series (behind Smash, of course), with Mario being my favorite. I also have two mains from each game (64, Melee, Brawl) with Mr. Game & Watch rounding up the list for being an interesting character. Yoshi and DK as secondaries due to their ties with the Mario series. Peach wasn't really a character I was interested in, but started using her in her Daisy outfit for the lulz, so she became a staple. Snake and Sonic made the effort of being in the game, so I may as well play as them! Then to make a nice even number, I stumbled on Ness and found him likeable.

Here are my retroactive mains...

Melee Mains: :mariomelee: :luigimelee: :yoshimelee: :bowsermelee: :drmario: :gawmelee:
Secondary: :dkmelee:
"Joke" Character: :peachmelee: (in her Daisy palette)

Three from each game (64, Melee) with Yoshi promoted to main. I enjoy playing as Dr. Mario and hope that he returns in Smash 4. Again, Mr. Game & Watch rounds up my mains and DK and Peach have their roles same as Brawl.

N64 Mains: :mario64: :luigi64: :yoshi64: :dk64: :ness64: :pikachu64:

Ness and Pikachu round up this list of mains.

Granted, all of these are subject to change, as I plan on replaying all three of these on a regular basis in 2014 to build up to Smash 4.

As for Project M, I'll give it a shot, though I don't imagine my mains changing from Brawl (as Dr. Mario is a costume rather than his own character). Out of the current Smash 4 reveals, I see Mario, Luigi, and Bowser returning to the lineup. I'll try out both Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, as well as the other newcomers. And of course, Mega Man will join Sonic as a Guest Main.

Does anyone else find themselves using a different main in each smash bros. game?

For example I myself went through a lot of phases...
SSB64: I used :linkmelee: as my main, but shifted to :falconmelee: , then back to :linkmelee:

Melee: Started with :linkmelee: , but switched to :marthmelee: , then :falcomelee: , then :roymelee: , and back to :falcomelee: .

Brawl: :falco: , switched to :sonic: , then to :wolf: , then :yoshi2: , and back to :wolf:.

I hope I'm not the only one who's done this.
i hope to main one of the new characters. but if non are to my liking then back to fox!

Well, in 64 I immediately went to Pikachu but also went to Falcon and Ness for sheer obscurity.

In Melee, I immediately played Zelda, Ganondorf, Young Link, Sheik... yeah I like Zelda. I started playing Roy and Mewtwo as well, while sticking with Ness and Pikachu a bit. It wasn't until a few years ago when I realized Peach's full potential as a fighter.

In Brawl, I stayed with Peach, Pikachu, and Zelda. I picked up Lucas for a while, then tried out Samus. I then discovered Toon Link and he's been my #1 for a while. And I'm also quite frequently using Zero Suit Samus. So right now for Brawl it's Toon Link > Peach > ZSS > Zelda > Pikachu.

Hmmm....I generally jump around in my journey for definite mains.

64: My first Smash game was Melee. That being said, I have had so little experience with the first Smash that :kirby64: is who I go ahead and say is the closest thing to a main I have.

Melee: Started off as :kirbymelee:, then discovered :gawmelee:. Also tried to main :roymelee: because my older brother mained him. I still primarily main :gawmelee:, but I've gotten extremely acquainted with :nessmelee: recently. More on that later.

Brawl: Started off with:metaknight: because he's one of my favorite video game characters ever, but quickly realized he's OP. I then became a Mother fan and felt obligated to try out :ness2:, which was a terrific decision. It even effected who I mained in Melee. I still use :gw: from time to time, and am currently working on getting better with :pt:, :sonic:, :dedede:, and :wolf:.

I have no clue who I'll use in the new game because I don't know the full roster, or if any of the hypothetical newcomers are characters I'm a huge fan of, but Mega Man and Villager look cool to use. However, I know I'll be using Ness first.

THE END.

N64: :dk64:
Melee: I stayed to :dkmelee: and I seconded :drmario:
Brawl: :dk2: seemed too slow and floaty until I switched to Wario.

I'm hoping that either DK will be better or I'll switch to Villager for SnG, or I'll try WFT cause it would be cool to take out my friends with some exersize. :)
