I wonder if anyone actually argued that Wolf, and not Falco, should be in Melee back in the PRE-MELEE DAYS. Seems like if you'd actually put yourself in those REALLY OLD SHOES, then Falco is the only obvious answer.

STAR? CHRONO?
If the Wolf in 64 rumor is true, and he actually had been in 64, then there would've been a very good chance that he would've been in Melee over Falco.

Also if that rumor is true, I guess Sakurai thought that Wolf should've been the 2nd SF rep (in 64 times at least). However, I think Falco ranked higher on the Melee poll (though I could be wrong) and was included due to aesthetically being more diverse (compared to Fox) than Wolf was.

I agree that Falco is the better choice, and I'm glad he was the one to be included, although eyepatch Wolf is pretty awesome. :awesome:

I hate how long it took me to realize N3ON is actually a girl. I feel embarrassed one time I called her N3ONMAN. DX

Need to start paying attention more.
Don't worry about it. ;)

People on here seem to have realized it much quicker than on other forums. On one I used to go to they still thought I was a guy after repeated telling them otherwise. :glare::rolleyes:

After I while I just stop correcting people. Plus N3ONMAN sounded epic even if it didn't really apply.

I think it was, but I don't know how that can be proven....
I think for some reason I was thinking the trailer was during Spaceworld, but that's dumb.

So yeah, was totally announced with the trailer.

WELP. What a tease you are, Sakurai.
Actually the game was first leaked in April 2001, although nothing was known about it. Less than a month later (on May 17) Melee was revealed at E3, and although a trailer was shown, I don't think it was the opening cinematic (although it might've been).

Regardless, there would be about a month of possible speculation before anything of Melee was shown, leaving a few weeks without any trailer influence to cause bias. I suppose it all went out the window when the first bits of actual information came out, but there was a (brief) time before when there was no information, similar to the situation we are in now with Smash 4. Except ours is lasting more than a month.

Super Smash Bros. Melee was officially announced at the same time it was revealed during E3/Space World. It was a launch title for the Gamecube that year which, naturally, created a lot of hype for the system. It certainly did for me. I remember getting my issue of Nintendo Power as a kid and seeing screens for the "brand new Super Smash Bros. Melee". My mouth was grinning from ear to ear, in particular as I saw Ness and the new Onett stage, since Earthbound was one of my favorite games of all time at that point. I even had my father call me to his office just to show me a new trailer for the game.

Very nostalgic moment for me which I remember quite well.

Nope nope, I even remember reading with GOOGLE TRANSLATE, telling everyone that Sakurai had three or four other companies put together a trailer just for E3 very quickly, because Sakurai wanted to so badly.

I WASN'T A VERY INFORMED CHILD. I just remember looking at something on the computer with my friend, probably cheat codes, and wondering "You think they're making another Smash Bros.?" After a quick search, we were amazed. Fox's laser effects and Fountain of Dreams stand out distinctly in my memory. Thought the graphics were beautiful.

Your posts have a type of feminine energy/feel to them so I can't say I'm too surprised about this finding, lulz.

Not very surprising people responded that way, it is rare to see a girl who is actually very knowledgeable of gaming. Though it is something I can believe, yes. (I think the female "energy" is the use of emoticons which is stereotyped among dudes as feminine, which makes John the most girly of us all).

I wish I was cool like Star and was eagerly anticipating the release of Melee. The only thing I remember about Melee was that my cousin was playing it at his house and I really wanted to see him play it because I played the first one but we had to leave that very minute and he was like, "Wait, no! It will only take a moment to get in a match!" XD I knew then that I had to get it to know what it was like beyond the menus.

The only game I eagerly anticipated was Brawl, and I was only a simple fanboy at the time. Next time I'm going to be deadly serious next time.

You guys are lucky. You at least knew of Smash and Melee before it came out.
I didn't know Smash existed until a friend of mine had Melee and we played it. And this was before he unlocked Mewtwo and Game & Watch.

I remember seeing the Smash 64 commercial and I think my mom just got it for me right away. I knew about Melee because of Nintendo Power and I got it for Christmas. MAD MEMZ :')

I never did understand how emoticons are seen as a feminine trait. I usually use it when texting at least, but I try to use it sparingly here on the boards. I suppose I want to try to convey myself as a more serious member. Still, I'll throw in the occasional ":3" every once in a while.

Yeah, there were a lot of people like that during the old days of Brawl, those people usually wound up being the most disappointed with the game.

The funny thing is I think a lot of us young "Brawlers" started out as belligerent fanboys, always looking at all of the big named posters and secrety wishing to be like them. Now here we are, and we're pretty much those guys and gals now, the seniors. lol

Yeah, I can attest to that. Don't get me wrong, even though I still am disappointed with the slow pace, floaty physics, random tripping, and that godawful lack of hit stun, I still find the game fun to play nonetheless.

I feel that females on the internet tend to be more propper with their grammar unless they feel comfortable. Whereas male posters are either consistently sloppy or propper.

You know what's funny? Smash Bros. actually got me into video games. Melee was the first video game I ever played.

When Brawl came out, I was just glad another one was going to come out.

@Star: You know there's nothing manlier than the reminiscing between two old men.
War has changed...

I find it funny how everyone is amazed N3ON is a girl. It's like everywhere you go you can pass by a girl and not give her a second thought, but on the internet, it's like finding a legendary Pokémon. Funny how people act.

Found the full Melee poll results; even if people were expecting Wolf more, Falco was more popular (so was Slippy)

lol, thanks! I'm glad people were able to pick up on, I didn't want to resort to having to change my text color to different shades of pink.

Not that declaring gender really matters too much on a Smash site, opinions are still opinions.
However I can tell I'm in the minority here, as I usually am with Smash stuff. :ohwell:

I'd much rather overuse emoticons than be taken seriously. Seriously. :awesome::laugh::grin::shades::smirk::rotfl:

Although I have been trying to cut down (obviously not very successfully). I might be an emoticon addict. :chuckle:

I guess I don't feel very comfortable here.

I try to keep my grammar correct in exchange for using a ridiculous amount of emoticons. English is still a ***** to get 100% correct though, sometimes I slip (English isn't my first language).

If you use too many emoticons, you'll look like John.

You don't want that.
That's why I'm trying to cut down. :awesome:

Sometimes I actually have to go through my post and delete some emoticons, because I've used too many. :embarrass:

I do feel a little guilty though having the conversation derail for like the third time to discuss the fact that I'm a girl.

If I recall, the trailer was done by Studio I.G., an anime studio well known for the CG work. You can see it prominently in Ghost in the Shell.

That sounds like a cool dad. I bought my Dad the first 3 Metal Gear Solid games after he said the series looked fun at Video Games Live. And he never even ended up playing them...

I was so much of a Pokemon fan back then that I didn't even care about any other series, all I wanted to see was some Pokemon Newcomers and I didn't even care who they'd end up being. I do remember expecting Diddy and Olimar though.

In the end my only real disapointment with Brawl was no Mewtwo, tripping, and a few stages that I didn't care for (Summit, 75m, Mario Bros). I also remember thinking that Wolf was the cheapest character ever with his spamming Smash Attacks.

I find it funny how everyone is amazed N3ON is a girl. It's like everywhere you go you can pass by a girl and not give her a second thought, but on the internet, it's like finding a legendary Pokémon. Funny how people act.
I wonder what's the equivalent to a shiny Pokemon?

Sol Diviner.

Why the condescending question?
That is Oasis' typical question, he doesn't really mean it.

Yeah, there were a lot of people like that during the old days of Brawl, those people usually wound up being the most disappointed with the game
Some of the features I wanted that got in were poorly executed, but overall I really enjoyed the game and wasn't too disappointed.

It is hard for me to genuinely dislike games though, which is a fortunate trait. XD

It works, you are perhaps the most serious I have seen on here. I try to go for that as well, but drop it a lot because it is exhausting, even when trying to hold that image up on the internet.

Emoticons are just used a lot by girls, I think that is the reason. That and the male face only has two expressions: =l and

I remember seeing the Smash 64 commercial and I think my mom just got it for me right away. I knew about Melee because of Nintendo Power and I got it for Christmas. MAD MEMZ :')
This. That commercial is the best video game commercial of all time.

That's pretty much how I felt about Melee (I also was very unfamiliar with alot of the other series back then). I remember being ecstatic when I unlocked Mewtwo, but was only mildly interested when I unlocked Pichu. lol

With Brawl none of the characters I really wanted actually got in, except Sonic, (not that I disliked the ones that did get in) my main (Roy) and one of my favorites (Mewtwo) got removed, and I remember being very underwhelmed with most of the modes (Event Matches, Online, and Classic especially -- I didn't mind the SSE on my first playthrough). I have higher expectations for Smash 4, but I don't know how likely most of them actually are. :ohwell:

I wonder what's the equivalent to a shiny Pokemon?
Probably a person that has actual correct and exclusive info about Smash 4. Actually a shiny Pokemon might be more common than that.

Unrelated, but something I found interesting nonetheless: while going through the full Melee poll results, Sonic and Megaman are tied at least number of votes for 3rd party characters, and are below characters like Chocobo, Doraemon, Bomberman, and Crash Bandicoot. If those were the current most popular 3rd parties, I'd be a lot less excited about which one we got in Smash 4. Although I ♥ Bomberman.

I actually have exclusive Super Smash Brothers Next information. Ghirahim is in.

So is Impa, she is replacing the Sand Bag.

When I first played Melee, I have not played that many video games that weren't Pokemon.
I mean, I recognised characters like Mario and Donkey Kong, but the only characters I truly knew/cared about were the Pokemon.
Especially Mewtwo when I saw him in the game the 2nd time I played it at my friend's house (he was my favorite Pokemon). Then I was hooked.

Which is one of the main reasons why Mewtwo being cut from Brawl hurt me so. It was HE that got me hooked on Smash in the first place. :mewtwo:

@Neon: Doraemon was even ALLOWED on the poll?

I knew about both the original and Melee for quite a while before I ever actually played them. I remember seeing Pikachu on the cover for both at my local video store for years and hating my parents for not allowing me to own a video game until the GBA and later not knowing the difference between a PS2 and GC.

Had to wait until 2005 for the GC/Melee bundle. I remember reading the Mewtwo coverage on Serebii and thinking that he's the strongest character in the game too. Copied by friend's data in order to get him the first time. lol

I'm also starting to think that Shiny Pokemon aren't worth it...

I would be 100% okay with that.
In fact, I'd turn sandbags on high.

You just earned some respect.
Bomberman is awesome! Of the realistic 3rd party choices, he's always been my #1.
Those Bomberman fakes pre-Brawl always got my hopes up.

It's sad that nowadays his chances are dwindling. :(

Of course Shiny Pokemon aren't worth it, their allure is if you accidentally come across one. To go out of your way to try and find one is absolutely ridiculous.

Although thousands of people do just that, but I'll end my post here gracefully.

Strange though, that Doraemon was apparently a popular request for Melee, and then seems to be one again as Chrono said...
I'm willing to bet that if Sakurai decides to nix the rule that a 3rd Party must have debuted in a video game, that Doraemon would be the first character of that nature to be added...
Of course that's unlikely within itself.
