I'm pretty new to smash bros in general. I saw in some videos that a lot of players approach with Fair (I think I'm saying it right). They take such short hops, its hard for the opponent to attack. I have the joystick controlling the jump function,. Is that wrong? If anybody could help me it would be a big improvement from noob to intermediate noob.

I use the wiimote/nunchuck control scheme with tap jump on. So your saying I should put jump as a button?
That can really help a lot. Keep tap jump on however.

Personally, if it helps, the control config I use which works alright is: C=jump, Z=shield, D-pad=C-stick, 1=grab, everything else is the same. Picking up a Gamecube controller is the generally best setup, but it's not like you can't be good if you're using the Wiimote/Nunchuk.

Thanks for the replies, another thing would it be wise to turn on shake smash? I've tried it for a couple of games, but I cant get over playing a fighting game, and moving the controller like that. Would it help with anything or is it just stupid?

Nope, never seen anything shake smashing can do that the c-stick can't do better.

I hit the end of of the X button instead of pressing the whole thing makes short hopping a breeze.

What about the classic controller is it better than the gamecube controller?
The Game Cube Controller is MUCH better than the Classic Controller. Short-hopping is made easier on the game cube controller because you can tap the end of that curved X button on the game cube controller. I'd imagine that tapping the "end" of the classic controller's X button would be much harder. I'm not sure if there's a Z button on the classic controller or not; I think there's one in the back...? (I've never used one for anything before, so I'm not sure) Anyways, if the Z button is in the back, then having a shoulder Z button is a LOT more convenient for dash grabbing, IMO.

There's probably other reasons than these, but the Game Cube Controller makes your performace in-game much more efficient than any other controller.

yup, your best bet is to use a GC controllez. it will automatically make you better. If you still can't short hop then, I don't think smash is the game for you because they made it really easy. But yeah, I played with wiimote sideways once and Short hopping was nearly impossible with some chars o_O Don't know about wiimote/nunchuk though

I've learned to short hop really well with lightly "flicking" the nunchuk movement stick diagonally forward or backward . But I still feel that it is very cumbersome to do this.

Next purchase... Game Cube controller (Wave Bird)

No. Not in any way whatsoever.
there is one thing: R and L are very "deep" buttons on the gc controller. On the classic, they are very shallow... easy to compress and therefore (although its admittedly not a huge difference) arguably faster. Personally, I use the GC controller but I remove the springs from the R and L buttons. Its alot nicer.

Nintendo just lost a Joy Stick lawsuit, So all the GC, Wave Bird, and Classic Controllers are supposed to be taken off the shelves at stores pretty soon, and are supposed to stay off shelves until the 21million is payed..
