Hi hi, Pool Room! I decided to post here because I have a question! I hope that's okay? >.<!

Welp, lately I've been a bit stumped! I'm a senior in high school going to college this Fall. But I have no idea what to major in.
I've been through countless of things. You see, I really enjoy helping people! That has always been my thing. I love putting smiles on others faces and cheering them up. I really love the Medical field as well, but I cannot be a nurse for personal reasons. Everything else takes a lot of money so that idea was kind of shot down.
But instead, I think I would really love making animated family inspirational movies! I really love to draw and I really love to inspire. At the same time I have story ideas all the time that people would enjoy. I'm only working on two, but at the same time I'm really embarrassed and shy about it. :urg:
Edit: Never mind! Had one of my story ideas here, but I got really nervous and shy to leave it. Sorry!
Either way, I'm afraid that I may not get anywhere with that. My college offers 1 year of Animation and 2 years of "film directing." That's only two years pretty much for my college life. And people say you don't get around much with two years but with four years. :( I'm so sorry! I guess I'm just afraid of not doing well. I get to go to college for free but only for the first 4-5 years. So I need to take advantage of anything I get now..
Thanks, guys! I just want to know if I should really try or not? I always dreamt I could do something like this on the side or for "funsies" and not really pursue it but at the same time I don't think my inspirational ideas will make it out to the hearts of many..
Thank you again! Sorry if that was long! -^___^-;;

You say you like helping people? Have you ever thought of social work or counselling? I've heard it's a tough job, but it sounds like something you could do.

I have, I have! But I heard that you don't really make much at all. Not that money is important to me, but eventually I want to have children so I'm afraid I may not have much to provide for them. And there are jobs like that I can do volunteering as well. And I really enjoy just volunteering! I really don't know. XD;; ah! I'm sorry! >.<! Thanks for the tip though, Lythium!!

But provide what, exactly? Knowledge that money is more important than spending your life doing something you are passionate about?

Just saying.

Proving food, a stable home, schooling, etc.
Yus. There are a lot of things I am passionate about. But at the same time, the future worries me. I would totally rather just go ahead and make inspirational animated movies, but how far in life would that get me exactly? Would I get hired right off the bat? Would I find a job? I'm having to take all of these into consideration. But yus, I do enjoy helping people! A lot of times I figured I could get a stable job and volunteer on the side, or animate things on the side, etc. But then that leads the question what would I do? I'm sorry! XD; I hope I don't seem annoying or anything..

jolly old england. hohoho.
I kind of had similar requirements to you when I was thinking about what job I wanted to do. You should just go through a list of jobs in the service industry and see which ones you like best and learn more about them.

The job ideas that reached the top of my list were:

Teaching
Videogame programming
Medicine
Nursing
Running my own business
Research

I kind of wish I had a twin to send on a different career path, just to see what would happen.

You seem really compassionate and patient, Today!
Have you considered working with special needs children? You would have to go to school a bit longer but.....
I think you would have a flexible schedule enough so that if you ever wanted to try dabbling in short stories/animation you may be able to do so.

:) Pursue what you want in life. Make your life great, and if you really want to do something, then get out there and do it! Life is what you make it, don't be nervous and shy about your interests. Everyone has different interests.
Take for example George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars. His ideas at the time were so outlandish that most people didn't really see where he was coming from and didn't accept his ideas, but they eventually turned out to spawn a mass franchise and become internationally popular and known. Who knows, your ideas might be the next hit, you know! Don't shoot something down before trying it first. Get lots of friends and family around you to read about the story ideas and help you to make them better.

As for your career at this point, as others have said, since you like helping people you should consider getting a job that has you socially involved. I also recommend looking at this site as far as animated movies go: http://www.adigitaldreamer.com/articles/animationcareerinfo.htm
One of the key things you can do for this type of career is to get lots of connections. Talk to people, figure out what you can do and where you can go to get the animation advice you need. Also, talk to your counselors at your college and ask them about these things. That's what they're there for, to help you out with your careers. I'm sure they will give you some connections to people in the animation field, so you can be hired by a family animation film company. :) For the social part, who knows, at your job you could go out to events sponsoring the new family film you're making and speak publicly for them. :D As for how much you will make, there's no solid answer to that. Different positions offer different salaries, so you will have to talk to your counselor (or someone here that knows more about animation salaries) about that. If you want a ballpark estimate, then go to this site, but keep in mind that the salary will be either higher or lower than this: http://www.careertoolkits.com/animation/animation-salaries.html

Hope I helped, and good luck on your career and the rest of your life! Enjoy your future children too. :)

Thanks for the lovely responses, guys!

@SuperBowser; Thanks! I've tried to do something like that but every choice I have is worrisome. A lot of the things I'd like to do only require two years of schooling and like I said before I hear people only accept people with four years not two. >.<; There are a few more things I'm interested in but my college doesn't provide it. And I don't think I should choose a different college since this one is free.

@Wiscus, Thanks! I actually have! I really enjoy children. And I wanted to teach at one point. But at the same time I don't know.. I don't think I'd really want to teach as much as I did. ): So confusing. >.<; But thanks so much!

@Saphire, Wow! Thanks so much! I'll chec k out those links! -^__^-; And yeah, I guess I'm just worrying so much? I'm just afraid of not having a four year college degree that I won't get anywhere. Maybe I can do double majoring just in case? But thanks so much! >.<!! I'll keep that in mind. Very kind words. Thanks everyone for taking the time! Sorry for rambling so much..

Yeah. Don't worry so much. Just relax and be sure of yourself and your interests. Don't be afraid of not having enough- people have gotten by and even gotten very famous coming from nothing at all, so you're definitely going on the right track by making sure of your plans now. You can talk to your counselor more about whether or not you want to double major. You're very welcome, it's no problem! :)

If you do decide to go with the animation story thing, don't be nervous or shy about your work. People respond better to confidence, they will be more reassured of your abilities if you make a relaxed, confident and enthusiastic presentation of your ideas. :)
