I have a theory. Luna was never as small as she is now. The shock of getting zapped by the elements made her metabolism go backwards.

Well, I found some drapery in episode one that shows a mini luna and big celestia. So, I assume that means they were different sizes to begin with. The part was when twilight meets rarity for the first time. You see a camera shot of the decorations.

In the story book the houses are about a fifth the size of mountains. Im pretty sure the story book wasnt made with proportions in mind.
