They seriously need to have more BG ponies. It would be cool if there were ponies that look like members of the show's staff chillin' in the Bg but nope, clonies everywhere.

It's a big trade off. If they did, they'd spend too much time on creating a unique design for a big crowd, and would never get to air on time. Besides, the main focus are the main characters, so it's not that big of a deal.

Theres a fair emount of detail in it already, For example, check the stain glass windows!

Although I would prefer a more diverse and spread of recolor to mane style ratio among crowds. Keep in mind I mean crowds as that in a general background where it's a few to several ponies at a time, would want them to be all unique, but those are already taken by the background ponies we all know and named.

There are well over enough background ponies to use in the audience without having duplicates. Diversity would also be nice, as I'd love to see some fillies amongst the crowd. Also, needs more Apploosa civilians in the attendance.

Well it's not like our focus is always on the BG (unless you're obsessed w/ Derpy). But for a staff that has taken the time and care to insert and animate things into this show which many studios would have shrugged off I would expect a bit more effort/creativity with the background details for scenes with crowds.
EDIT: In the end clonies don't make or break the show so whatevs~.
