Now that I have your guys' attention... Well, this IS actually a little rant about My Little Pony, speaking of. Now, I'm going to get it all out of the way, but I absolutely love the new series of it. I never got into it so much as a kid, but I do remember seeing a couple of things in my early years of childhood, even playing some of the video games. I think it was either on the Super Nintendo or the SEGA Genesis. Never in a thousand years would I have anticipated I'd be 21 years old, and watching such a bright and colorful cartoon called "My Little Pony". And admittedly? I have the internet to thank for bringing it to my attention. Some people talk about some episodes being better then others or going a little more critical in how "the writing was better for this one" or such and such. But really, do you have to be that into it to look at it that way? I took great pleasure in both the big and little episodes and the lessons learnt from them. I'm watching this show for the value it gives me. An innocent, bright and hilarious show that appeals to surprisingly everyone. It reminds me of when I was a kid, getting up for Saturday morning cartoons. Whether it was good or not, it brings a smile to my face. Even if I watch them through YouTube mostly now, I've gotten that feeling back.
It feels great.
...what DOESN'T feel great, on the other hand, is a lot of the internet stuff that's been following it. Maybe it's a sense of embarrassment because of the overall nature of the show, let alone the TITLE, or just everything building up; the fact that this show gained internet fame as well because of 4Chan makes me feel...uncomfortable. I can't watch this show or post too often in something about My Little Pony without skimming through internet memes (like, "Fluttershy. your waifu. :3"), "brony" talk, Princess Trollestia, Rainbow Dash being a lesbian (now bisexual apparently), the list goes on and on. Now, I know what you're all thinking. "Oh it's the internet; expect it. There's worse stuff out there. Man up, fgt. lololol"
Well, of COURSE there's worse stuff. Like Rule 34 (of which I haven't indulged in, thank you very much) and the underbelly of the internet itself, 4Chan still. I don't have to like it though. I'm not visibly disturbed or mad or anything, but every time I get finished watching an episode of My Little Pony, only to surf the forums again to find something MLP related coming right back to Derpy or the little internet-tastic things mentioned above that I feel challenges the integrity of the show, I sigh sometimes. It's a weird feeling; I have the internet that DOES all this to thank for making me curious about it, but I can't go anywhere on the net to talk about the show I got hooked on, without all this internet lulz stuff mucking up the whole thing.
I just wish that watching My Little Pony could remain seperate from the typical internet shenanigans that have now accompanied it, so I can enjoy watching an episode or talking about a favorite character without being called one of the "bronies" or being asked something like, "so i herd trollestias at it again". I'm not saying that anybody on Smashboards has done this to me, but this is just me, I'm sure.
...or is it? Anybody else out there like this show and yet a bit "uhm unsure" about the internet following that twists things as we try to enjoy it for what it is?
Oh internet. How I love yet question thee sometimes.
