It looks good, I enjoyed the parcor stuff in Crackdown and Assassins Creed, so I'm looking forward to this.

I have no idea what you just said though, except for the first paragraph. Who are trevon and milkman?

I think it looks awesome, but right now with so few details I'm thinking it'll be a rent rather than a buy.

I wonder how long it is, it also seems like the kind of game best suited for a gamepad and I have yet to purchase a 360 controller so I might have to hold out to get both.

I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Seems like a very new direction to go in, for a first person shooter sort of game. I suppose calling it a "shooter" isn't accurate, really.

The parkour in the game looks very well done. All the little details seem just right, to the point where it feels like you're actually running in the game, rather than just floating along at a constant rate with a gun held out in front of you.

Frankly, I'd like to see other first person games, even those less focused on platforming and parkour aspects, adopt some of the visual and auditory techniques that this game uses to feel so real.

The first post in this thread is very confusing, though. It would be great if you could edit it with a little more information about the game, UzakiuzuG. Maybe some screenshots, too. As it is now, someone who doesn't know anything about the game won't learn anything from checking the first post in this thread.

I see you guys agree with Justice (Friend) here, but please tell me why this game is cool. What would be the background on it, the story. Why do you like this game what makes it so special? What am I not seeing here? These are my thoughts it looks cool and all but it look so boring. Point A to Point B. while fighting people. I mean tons a games have this concept but this just seems so Dull. Just me though. Fixed it a tad bit.

I don't think I like the cell-shade esque graphics, still looks like a nice game. I might get it to try and beat time trials and whatnot, don't think I'll be stopping much to steal enemies weapons though.

Uh... isn't this the plot of just about every FPS game ever? There might be a few exceptions here and there, but almost every FPS, even the really good ones, are just moving through a map and shooting people.

This game looks good, not because it defies those genre conventions, but it expands the "moving" aspect of the game to make it even more important than the shooting. If that doesn't appeal to you, that's fine, but it's silly to characterize it as "Point A to Point B while fighting people," because every shooter, from Half-Life to Halo, is the same thing.

The appeal of this game is that it does that same thing in a new and unique way.

Reviving this thread to point out that the Mirror's Edge playable demo is up on PSN, at least in the EU store. Don't stop, get it get it.

I've played through it twice, and it's awesome. Very short and a bit easy, but definitely left me wanting more.

It feels fantastic when you get everything right and nail a section of your run perfectly. That said, chances are you won't nail it first time. Or, if you're like me, second time. Chances are you'll wind up plummeting to your death instead.

Got the demo last night; amazing and refreshing gameplay. I hope the actual game will have more to do in the city and such, but for now, it will be an awesome rental.

The demo is a lot of fun and solidifies my opinion that this game will make a good rental. Absolutely love the very crisp, very bright graphic style.

is the demo out on xbox live yet?
Yes.

Personally, I think it looks amazing. I plan to actually buy the game, rather than rent it, simply because this seems like exactly the sort of thing I'd love to play again and again.

Anyhow, the game gives you a very real and kinetic feeling of speed, and I love how you have to use all the various tricks in quick succession if you want to actually have a decent run.

Unlike games like Assassin's Creed, you don't just point the character in a certain direction and then let the game handle the rest. On the contrary, it's very interactive. In AC, I'd be holding down a trigger and pushing forward on the analog stick. In this, I'm holding down the trigger and using various buttons to perform all sorts of acrobatic maneuvers, both simple and complex.

This is probably the most fun I've ever had playing a demo, and I fully expect the actual game to live up to my expectations.

Quoted for truth.

I've played the demo four times now, and I'm still not bored of it (although it is a little repetitive, obviously). I can't wait for this game to come out, it's just so much fun. It's such a simple concept, and at the same time it's just awesome.

The only problem I could see coming is if the game is too short. If it has a good length and the rest of the game offers more challenge than the demo did, I see this being a great game. Even if it's not, it seems like the kind of game I could play over and over again so it still wouldn't be a total loss either way.

I wish there was a PC demo, I don't think I'm going to risk buying it if I have no idea how it plays.

I just found out EA is making this, I guess I'm **** out of luck.

You play as a hot asian chick who runs over buildings, kicks people in the face, and has a cool handbag
. and it's first person. and the demo kicks ***. Basically no one should not buy this game.

Blurp!

Has anybody else played the retail game? I just finished it. It was fun, but annoying. I say that because the level in the demo is pretty good about keeping you going in the right direction, whereas in nearly all the levels besides that, you'll be stopping on the rooftops, while under gunfire, hesitating where to go next. There's the "hold B to see where to go" mechanic, but it doesn't work too well in some levels, as it'll point you across a big gap, that you actually have to go around.

The game really ended feeling a lot like Assassin's Creed to me, but in first person, and obviously not in the same time period. And you aren't assassinating people. Just the general feel.

If you play through, I recommend just forgetting about the achievement/trophy "Test of Faith", which is "play through the game without shooting an enemy". There were a ton of sections I could've got through on my first attempt, but because I was going for the achievement, I died. Over and over. More like a test of patience.

Eh, I'm suspicious of the game, partially due to the EA association, but also since it just looks like it takes itself far too seriously. Seriously, the title even sounds pretty pretentious. I like the art direction, I just hope that the plot and general themes of the game are less pretentious than they seem to be at the moment, but I'll reserve my judgement I suppose.

I loved this demo and it was pretty fun, but honestly any game that does parkour/free running, anything like that just reminds me of Defrag, and how much more awesome it was.

I will say I think Mirror's Edge has an amazing style and I love the music, the biggest complaint i keep hearing is length obviously, but if there's enough replay value; that is if there's multiple ways to keep doing things and new techniques to improve runs, then I think it's gonna be worth the price ticket and then some.

still.........defrag ftw :)

Well, DLC has been announced for the game. It consists of seven new stages -- purely Time Trial. Which is actually what the package is called, the Pure Time Trial Map Pack. Each of the seven lacks foes, guns, and the city. Instead, they seem to be located in an abstract land with floating platforms, sort of virtual-reality-esque. The package will cost $10, and PS3 owners can get an eighth stage for free. It is to be released in January.

You can watch the trailer for it on PSN, XBL, or right here on YouTube.

I was disappointed with the game. As I told Cashed, it feels like a first person racing game, which gets boring and old fast. Neat concept, but I was bored with it.

It's a shame that such a high concept game did so terribly at retail. (But I suppose this could/should be expected because of the nature of the product) But fortunately, DICE and EA haven't given up completely. Hopefully they can use all the feedback they're getting to make the sequel something amazing.

It's just the game felt so randomized. I would run straight, jump off a plank, reach, miss the pipe. Ok, I was too far left. I do it again, moving right this time, and she jumps into the wall, so I split the different, jump, nothing. 90% of the time I expected a timer to appear because the enemies weren't even that big of a threat.

In actuality, if the enemies WERE more of a threat, do you think that would add to the overall frustration?

I think it would add some element that the game is an action based one and not a beat the clock style game.

I hate Yahtzee, too stuck up. He thinks he's The Man. Although he likes Saints Row 2, thats one good thing about him.

I played the demo of Mirror's Edge at a friends house, it seems good, but it is annoying when you fail to make a jump because you didn't jump at the very edge, which is nearly impossible to tell with the first person view. Im thinking about getting it for Christmas

All of Yahtzee's reviews are highly tongue and cheek. Saints Row 2 was awful though. I laughed pretty hard when VEHICLES DISAPPEAR ON A 7TH GEN PLATFORM. No reason for that at all.

Yeah, I agree. I hope they can improve the concept in a sequel. They're definitely onto something if they can just perfect it. I just hope that in improving it, they don't emphasize combat...a lot of people complained about the lackluster combat system but I personally think it's great to have a game that doesn't focus on combat, and I think it was intended to not focus on combat. If they could expand the game and find another penalty system that doesn't emphasize combat, it'd be golden. I'd also love to see the ability to create your own stages. That could be awesome.

I think it would add some element that the game is an action based one and not a beat the clock style game.
Yeah, Mirror's Edge really is a beat-the-clock kind of game. As someone really into speed running, I love the fact that the game emphasizes and encourages it, and I love the feel of the game. The combination of the breathtaking quality of jumping from building to building and the whole city as it is, with the monotone colors and the brightness and cleanness, contrasting the usual grungy environment.

Granted, I don't own the game yet (although I've played the demo many more times than I care to admit). I do intend to pick it up, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

This reminds me of Ben Yahtzee's review of the game were he noted that the City seemed too clean and we don't even know why we think these nice business men in their clean suits are the bad guy.
Wait a minute...I already mentioned it...now this is spam, this post will no longer exist after....I form an opinion of the game.

From my experience with the Demo I can definitely agree with my colleagues on the combat, the game needs to be more about running rather than breaking pace and stopping to steal X baddies gun because if you don't he will machine gun you to death. I suppose it's a part of the plot though, baddies are trying to stop you from delivering your package and they will do what the must to make sure their mission is complete. It still feels like it breaks the pace though. Although I REALLY hate having to walk across the balance beams/pipes, the Sixaxis does nothing to help. Yes I said my colleagues, no I don't know why.

You can watch it if you'd like Firus, but I'm sure it would be enough to force you make an account and comment on the video. Because Yahtzee hates everything.
I watched it but I (somehow) was not inclined to join just to yell at him.

I don't know. The game looks amazing, even aware of its flaws. I'm hoping that I won't have overhyped it. I'm really into speed running and it's really exhilarating...hm. If they keep releasing small Time Trial packs they can almost certainly keep me busy, but I'm nervous until I've played the game. Considering I've played the demo a whopping 83 times (I reached 50 and was going to slow it down, but my friend challenged me to play it 100 times so I'm working at it), I can probably get enough enjoyment out of replaying the stages of the real game. I'm just really nervous because the last game I hyped up and really, really wanted was Brawl, and then it was a disappointment. A colossal disappointment.

As for that video though, the people on that video make me sad. I've only watched a few of his reviews but he's definitely pretty critical. He makes some inane complaints and comments in general, which is probably because, as someone commenting pointed out, it's funnier when he hates the game. So the more critical he is, the better feedback. Yet there are people on the video taking his word as gospel, saying "Well I can add this game to my list of games not to get."

It was certainly funny (especially when he randomly threw in something about eating a shoe), but he's just kind of a reviewer for entertainment value, not someone to take seriously as the deciding factor for getting/not getting a game.

Pretty much everything you just said applies to his Sonic Unleashed review, if you can call it that. All he really did was complain about how bad Sonic has gotten and how Sega needs to realize that quality > quantity. He had maybe two or three things about the actual game. I don't use his reviews as a basis for whether or not to buy a game, especially considering he never likes any of the games he reviews.

But to keep on Mirror's Edge...

Am I the only person with complaints about crossing balance beams? Maybe it's just that I play the PS3 version (demo) but it's incredibly difficult and unbalanced (pun not intended) although it might just be that I'm using the PS3 version and even when you try to use the analog stick to keep balanced the Sixaxis still has an effect.

Just from the demo, I would agree. I don't think it's just because of the PS3 version either, since I have the 360 version. Even if you hold the control stick perfectly still it seems to unbalance a little bit. It's rather annoying. Fortunately, you can get the majority or all of the way across by jumping. If you jump, coil, and then time your jumps right when you land on it, you can continue jumping across the entire thing. I know because I've gotten across the ones on the demo level that way.
