Ok so this is aimed mostly at QLD'ers

So I just bought a PS3 slim off a friend for a good price. I wanna finally play the MGS series but since slim is not backwards compatiable with PS2 games, (but I can play MGS1 no problem lul wat) I was wondering if anyone would loan me a PS2 with these games XD

If not I guess I'll go buy everything I need. Seems like a waste of money though since it will collect dust once I'm done with the series. Unless there is some other work around I haven't come across yet?

I wish Konami would put the first 3 games on blu ray.

MGS2: Substance is officially on PS2, Xbox and PC.

Just don't be dissapointed when you find out MGS4 is the worst in the series (not exactly bad or anything though) =P

yeah, theres some cool parts in it, but the best ones are easily 1 and 3.

also, and it goes without saying, make sure you play them in order.

2 was the most superior as far as story building goes, and four was the worst in that department. That and four relied off the nostalgia of 1.

I don't think too much of four tbh. Chapter 1 and 2 were amazingly fun, chapter 3 was ok, 4 was terrible for gameplay and 5 sucked.

Mgs 2 is the best. 3 and 1 are equally awesome as eachother in 2nd place close behind.

the story of 2 could have been told abit clearer.

the story of 1 doesnt rely on anything else, its a great standalone game.

The only bad things in Twin Snakes imo are the over the top cut scenes (they've over the top, but they're still cool) and the removal of some accents (even then the accents don't really bother me). The only song in Twin Snakes that I can think of atm thats from the original is the alert phase, a lot of people like the music in the original.

I have trouble picking a favourite cus I really liked 1, 2 and 3, but if I had to pick a favourite it'd probably be 3. 4 was enjoyable first time through but when I look back at now I think wtf.

EDIT: MGS 1 game out on PC too, it has slightly better textures and stuff so you may as well play that version.

EDIT 2: Oh yeah also forgot the voice actor for Gray Fox was different in Twin Snakes, but I actually liked the new one.

Ok twin snakes

1. Like ric said the cutscenes are way too ridiculous. One of the things that makes mgs is so great is that they incorporate all these supernatural and over the top elements but still support them with technological bull**** reasoning, whilst this can often be silly its generally done well enough to feel apropriate. Twin snakes just takes it too far with Snake doing ******** things.

2. Music and voices arent as good. Gray Fox speeches are possibly my favourite part about MGS and they dont feel nearly as raw in twin snakes. Probs some bias here from having played the origonal first. Overall it shouldnt matter too much too a completely new player.

3. Difficulty, the inclusion of first person aiming in a game that was designed without it origonally makes some sequences way too easy. Of course the fun of mgs is going through in your own unique and exciting ways to increase difficulty and generall "cool" atmosphere.

4. Its a remake so the gameplay is generally smoother and cleaner and sets you up a lot better for mgs2. Mgs across the board has pretty awkward controls so its good to get use to them early i suppose.

Mgs 4 had great controls. 1 and 2 weren't so good unless you knew how they worked, then they weren't too bad.

I just wish there was more room for fun stuff on 4, after chapter 2 the gameplay drops hugely.

as if, that one part in chapter 4 near the end of it (you know what I'm talking about, so dont spoil it) was ****ing sweet

as for twin snakes, some of the music was actually the ****, like the rose escape part and pyscho mantis's boss theme.

but the voices weren't as good, now everyone seems to think thats not really a big deal, but part of what made the first game so great was the amount of real 'raw' (as james put it) emotion that is expressed through some of the greatest voice acting ever done.

the twin snakes just didnt have the same feel to it, not even close.

Tbh I don't remember chapter four that well, I play mgs for the creative stealth style stuff and chapter 3, 4 and 5 felt like they were lacking in that department. Chapter 1 and 2 were epic and what you would expect of an mgs game though and it was heading in a really good direction up until then.

I find 1 to have slightly awkward controls, but as it's there first 3D Metal Gear game they could get away with it, the rest of the series had amazing controls (4 was weird with trigger buttons though)

mgs4 was different. there was stealth but it was different since combat evolved.. which is fine since it went with the story kinda =P but it turned out more like a shooter towards the end :X i still loved them all.
mgs3 was stealthy since u dont have octo camo etc.

nothing wrong with the controls. except... why does it pause when u select your weapon XD

MGS4 could be played pretty stealthily. Try going the whole game without killing anyone xD.

I did do a no kills no alerts expert run on mgs4. The stealthy parts are in the first three chapters but chapter three has a lot less freedom. 1 and 2 were so fun though I replayed those chapters a lot.

The thing with those over the top scenes in Twin Snakes is that it was supposed to show Snake in his prime.

I mean, I know they're over the top, but they do show that he was a stand-out soldier from the rest of them. He was superhuman in a sense.

Although that FPV in Twin Snakes really makes the game so ****ing easy, especially with the M9.

Doesn't matter which ones are better though, just play the whole series of games and enjoy them :3

I've only done a no-kill run on MGS2, MGS4 COULD be played stealthy but when you had a sniper rifle and far away enemies.... what was the point? =P

Sam did no kills, no alerts on hardest difficulty in MGS 4, pretty nuts. You unlock
a big boss face camo, the way you see it in Act 3.

As I said before, MGS 4 first time through is an enjoyable experience, but as I look back at...

Act 3: Ocelot yelling "bang bang". Snake saying "big mamma".

At the end of Act 4, Ocelot does that lame thing where he pretends to die from Fox Die. Snake falls out of Metal Gear REX, breaks his arm in the process, then chases after Ocelot while making hilarious grunting noises and runs in a hilarious way (which Ocelot laughs and points at him)

Also Raiden stopping an entire submarine with 1 hand, then being crushed by it in slow mo with dramatic music (suggesting he was going to die) then surviving is a tad funny. Naomi killing herself because she couldn't deal with the mistakes she had made.

Act 5: Catapulting Snake onto the submarine. Snake going through the microwaves that shouldn't be possible to go through. Johnny and Meryl proposing while battling, while getting shot several times without SOP. Snake getting Ocelot's fist repeatedly slammed into his face. Ocelot apparently being on your side the entire time.

Epilogue: Johnny and Meryl getting married.

Debriefing – Naked Sun: Big Boss being alive.

EDIT:
Replace all my Ocelot's with Liquid, I forgot its actually Liquid, they used the voice actor for Ocelot for some reason.
Now I know that looks like I'm completely tearing the hell out of this game, but thats just the stuff that I thought was lame/funny.

MGS4 was probably the easiest MGS to do a no kills no alerts expert run. MGS 2 was pretty hard, the bosses were really challenging lol.

I agree with ric on most of that stuff. The game was a massive crowd-pleaser and lacked the creative flair the first three had.

Sam did MGS 2 European Extreme no kills, no alerts. I remember he was going though it at a decent speed, then was at
Fat man
for a few months. Then near the end where you have to keep tapping X to survive.... I never actually saw him do it, but when I saw his attempts, it was stupidly hard. European Extreme has no mercy :p

Another thing I didn't like about MGS 4 was that Snake was always a badass and MGS 4 just made him a joke...

My dream is for an MGS 3 remake with nothing changed except graphics and for it to be 60 frames per second.... *drools*.

For people that have played MGS 4, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5ddEUQz8FI&feature=related Oh wow, been a while since I've seen that, funnier than I remembered.
