Got my first Tournament in a week, any tips? The main reason i'm going is because they have melee friendly setups and RYU RYU RYU! It's sm4sh only, and I don't know why you would pick that over melee.

Just be sure to have a fun time. Don't be shy around people you don't know too well. And don't be obnoxious, there are a few of those people here. They're annoying imo

I already know a few of them(Thankfully). I am teaming with someone I don't know that well, so I am forced to not be shy, especially because I wan't to get to know people.

Know that you're gonna get rekt but keep a positive attitude anyways, keep your learning mindset over pride (learn why you lost and how to improve your play), and have fun.

I am definitely gonna have fun. I entered doubles with a guy who's pretty good, so HOPEFULLY I won't get rekt bad in doubles. BUT SINGLES... I need to find my coffin.

I'd say don't sweat it, the smash 4 scene isn't nearly as competitive as Melee. Still really fun though

i finally got a way of playing melee! I have to emulate it because i don't have the money to buy a gamecube, melee disk, controllers, and all that. i have been following the community since last evo, but i haven't been able to play until now. that said... i'm obviously trash, so i have a lot of practicing to do over the next weeks-months-years-etc.

Are you just playing base Melee on your computer (I'm assuming you're using the dolphin emulator). If that's the case you should download the 20XX hack pack, it makes training with melee a lot easier, plus there are extra costumes

That's a sell out move. You shouldn't get the hack pack till you beat the game, gives you the satisfaction that some got 13 years ago

...what? the hack pack doesn't add any hacks it just exists for the purpose of training. Plus you can still do all the single player stuff with it and actually use the c-stick

A few days ago I think I made a post in here expressing interest about match analysis. Since I haven't been able to sleep well recently and I don't have anything else I would rather do right now, I made a list of matches I'd like to examine in closer detail. I have more (the full list is 50+), but I think analyzing twenty sets before I go back to college in October is reasonable. I might make further cuts to the list to make it a little more manageable, but I think it'll take me considerably less time to analyze matches after I do the first few and get a feel for how it'll work. I think it's a good start, but is it too long?

e: I'd play the game more if I could, but as of now it's physically not possible for me to get useful practice in (I'm having hand pain unrelated to the game), so analysis is probably the next best thing as of now.

If you'd like someone to analyse it with you so you could both note what kind of techniques are being used then I'd be happy to help you out man! Also sorry to hear your hand isn't doing so hot.

Are cpus under the 20xx hack decent practice for when you're by yourself? If so, whats the right level to set them as?

Or should I just stick with the lab, and play only people when I get the chance?

I'd suggest you go with the Training Mode and practice there. iirc 20xx lets you use the C-stick which is such a relief. You can do so much with it from Fox shield pressuring (and learning how to space hits on shield) to combo followups, especially since 20xx offers random DI for computers. All things considered, I never liked actually trying to play the computers as opposed to just going into Training Mode and practicing everything the hack pack offers on my own. At most you can shadowbox or try to space yourself just outside the range of a computer, but playing a computer like you'd play a person probably won't yield good results.

Then again, I'm not an expert on 20xx, so if someone would like to correct me, you're welcome to do so.

They're better than regular CPU's because they DI randomly and tech really well, but they're not good to the point where you should practice on them and not other people or anything like that. One thing they are really good for is learning to reaction tech chase though. Also always stick with no higher than level 3, personally I use level 1 but some people say 3.

Just play with people but still do some stuff with CPUs like setting them to aggressive and trying to evade them.

Why do you do that, why not use like level 9 or funky DI 7

CPU's are useful only for the purpose of being sand bags to beat up, but higher level CPU's will do annoying things like power shield your moves and whatnot so you have to adapt your neutral game to them in a way that isn't helpful for actual play. Also when you have the hack pack even level ones will DI randomly

It's quite fun to go 2 on 1 with lvl 8 CPUs

Makes you feel like you're getting jumped in an alleyway and you feel bada** when you triumph. There is just something satisfying about beating up two opponents (the extra hit lag and impact), you feel like Batman fending off two baddies. This is also why I like obliterating Ice Climbers in tourney >:D

20XX is the way to go, if you want to get better honestly.

But if thats not an option, yah just combo practice.
I use 20XX, the cpus only a little bit different than the ones on the "clean" version.

Tbh, i only do tech and combo drills in the lab. But that only improves part of my game.

There are only so many things u can work on without humans.
Tech chases, DI mixups, Edge teching, chain throws, general movement.
But theres always something to work on. :p

Would just fighting them work? For improving reads? Or just DI chain grab practice?
It helps with reactionary stuff such as combos or tech chases or chain grabs as well as keeping your hands warm. It's not gonna help you with reads or nuetral or anything like that.

Anyone else having Evo stream issues. It is being very inconsistent for me, going offline then online at random intervals.

My internet is superb and running fine, and my proxy has never had stream issues...

Yea tons of upsets, chokings, hidden bosses, and old god comebacks.

This has been such an amazing EVO so far and it's NOT EVEN FINALS YET!

Quick question to the more advanced melee players here. A friend of mine has recently approached me about teaching them competitive smash. This person has pretty much no competitive experience whatsoever, but has played brawl pretty extensively as a casual. Should I begin teaching this person with Melee or with Project M?

Definitely begin with PM and if he wants he could transition over to Melee but he might just stick to PM. But totally start with PM he'll feel more comfortable with it
