Melee & Brawl selection screen comparison

I made a screenshot of the selection screen of Melee that was as close as I could make it to the Brawl image shown on the official site.

The Brawl character panels look shorter (or possible wider, and the image is zoomed in less). It looks like there's room for another row of character panels, so I copied the bottom row down to form a fourth row, and here's that comparison:

If it is simply another row, that would indicate between 28 & 36 characters, though of course they could also shrink the character boxes to fit more - in particular, fitting 10 per row to get up to 40 characters would probably be easy.

Cool comparison. I noticed that as well...

Very nice find on possible character slots.

Actually I just realized how close the Wii pointer hand looks like the Melee selector hand.

How do you even know that the name-inputting screen IS part of the Character Select screen this go-round? Now that each name is a profile with different options, thinking that it's automatically part of the Character Select screen because it was in Melee is already making several jumps in logic that are completely unfounded.

I'm not even gonna mention how the icons could be different sizes than in melee. There are just too many variables to come to that kind of conclusion.

I know the name inputting screen is *not* part of the character selection screen. This is what the name inputting screen looks like:

There is probably a related screen (or screens) after that one to set up options for the new profile.

I believe that name selection is done on the character select screen, as in Melee. The screenshot (and its caption) look pretty convincing to me. Same sort of panels as in Melee, one red and one blue, just like the panels for players 1 and 2 in Melee. One panel showing a selected character and the player's name, just like in Melee. The other panel with a name-selection tool above it, blocking the selected character entirely, a small change from Melee.

And why would Sakurai comment that the character-selection screen was still a secret below a cropped, partially blurred-out picture of some other screen?

I'm not even gonna mention how the icons could be different sizes than in melee. There are just too many variables to come to that kind of conclusion.
It wasn't a conclusion, it was speculation. :) Of course everything could be different, but I still find it intriguing that if the only layout change is another row of characters the given screenshot works perfectly.

A bunch of LESS characters with bigger icons will work out the same way. I realize you're speculating, but I'm saying that "speculating" is giving it too much credit. If you'd have said you were "randomly guessing," I wouldn't have anything to say against it. Speculating sounds like you have evidence, when you don't really have anything.

I think that screen might be the "Choose your controler screen" perhaps. No one really knows what is going on in that first pic, it might just be some sort of pattern that everyone keeps thinking is part of the character selection screen.

Who knows how the final version is going to look anyways.

Interesting thing I noticed about this screen is that where is your "HMN"/"CPU" Icon? How do you change between the two? It'd seem like a haslle if he made it so you had to make specific names for comps and set their "controller" to "CPU"

That last bit is randomly guessing, but still, where is the switch?

Sure, but everybody sane knows that's far less likely than more characters with the same size icon.

It's actually pretty obvious what's going on in the first pic. Right above it is the line "Once it’s entered, choose your name for your character on the character-selection screen before you begin fighting." Since it obviously shows a player choosing a name for their character, it is obviously the character-selection screen.

What proof do we even have that that blur IS the character select screen? It could just be a dummy one, or just a few things taken from the character select screen, and then pasted onto a blur.

I agree with Ondo here... it's pretty easy to see that the picture shows the character select screen.

Also, I think it would be unlikely that the character icons would be enlarged (fewer characters doesn't seem to make much sense to me), but then again, this thread is based purely on speculation.

Well if anyone bothered to actually read through my post in the other now closed thread you would know already that the blurred image is the character select screen, and that the portraits are (to the best of my ability to gauge it) at either 9 or 10 places per row. The amount of columns is unclear because YES that would be just speculating.

huh
hmm... I think that the bar in the top of the second picture is the character selection...
to be honest, I think that the entire screen may have been shrunk, because the name selection is on the left of the screen, unlike melee. so, smaller screen = more space=more characters=total pwnage.

EDITZ: whoops, I just realized that the name box is for the first player, and it got bigger...

Perhaps the selected characters come to be displayed in the center of the screen, in stead of the bottom of it.
