In what ways do you think The United States' poor economy affects the Melee community, if at all?

Not really much at all. Consumer spending on entertainment (melee's equivalent = tournament attendance) traditionally isn't affected very much by the economy.

As for the topic, unless anyone has lost their job due to the economy I doubt it's been effected in the slightest.

Im poor and still have gone to three tournaments this month. Lol.

its definitely not bad for locals but traveling to other regions is definitely tougher IMO

I've always been really poor, so thats affected my ability to travel at all. But with how things have been on the long road since I started smashin its a lot worse, I haven't been a tournament in 4+ years now simply because I cant spare a $10-$20 for a entry fee+ w/e for gas. I Love the crap outta melee but I cant spare the cash with no job.

the economy ****ed me over pretty hardcore. when I was a minor, my parents were SUPER supportive of my competitive gaming hobbies, and I had a job. The recession in 07 made me lose my job, mom got a wage freeze, and otherwise caused me to miss tons of opportunities to travel.

Things have been tapering off gradually since Darkrain moved to Texas.
Once a week (tops) is the most I get to play with people, and even that is only because I run the smash meetups in my basement.
About half the crew has to drive 45-60 minutes to get here (from different parts of the city) and sometimes they just can't pull it off due to work/other obligations.
Also, the scene really slows down around here during the winter.

During the Winter? Wouldn't that be prime time...call in to work saying your snowed in and hang out in osmeone's warm basement for hours on end.

I'd rather your current situation, Massive. atleast you get about once a week. If I want to play any melee with decently skilled players, I can only really do that at the Toronto Monthlies...

A ton of smashers cant attend events because of money
Why dont they have money? They either dont work or have too many bills to spare some cash to attend a tournament.
Why dont they have jobs? Laziness or the fact that its incredibly difficult to find jobs in many areas.
Why is it so difficult to find a job? Because there is an over-population issue in many areas as well as companies not being able to employee more people/even stay open because of lack there of money
Aka Because of a weak economy, we get this stupid chain.
