Is this **** really worth grabbing a bag of popcorn for?
Considering last year's announcement boosted the game to 1,000,000 unique daily plays, had 180,000 live twitch viewers, the (late) YouTube upload has almost 300,000 views...

You tell me? :)

Not gonna lie. SSF2 has no business being at Apex. The game interferes with the ground rules that stabilized Smash Bros. I mean really? 4th party characters for a game that is originally suppose to have 3rd party guests to a minimum as is? That's hardly fair. But just because it's fun makes everything okay. And with Sm4sh still relatively new, this is even more distasteful. Opinion.

At least make the game stand in one universe. EX: Nintendo has Mario, Link, Pikachu with third party characters who appeard in Nintendo games. Pixar has Woody, Sully and Mr. Incredible with third party Mickey Mouse because Pixar is a part of Disney. Etc..

But that's not my business so whatever. :4villager:

...Except its a fan game and they can do what they want?
They don't HAVE TO abide by the already established ground rules that the official smash bros games already have.

Its a fan game, made by people who take time out of their lives to make it. If they want to add characters that don't originate from video games, but appear in video games, that's their decision.

That's not the point. When you make a fan game, you should hold the same tradition as the original. Like, how would it be to make an FNAF remake, but with guns? Then reversing the game from horror to FPS?

You have the power to do whatever you want, but when you add features that would absolutely never happen in the originals, you're going too far. But like I said- that's none of my business. I'm not the creator, nor would I want to be. I just feel it's disrespectful to go out of bounds of the originals. But my opinion is contradictory to yours, so you'll disagree again. And I have no issue with that.

Just gonna say this, your Fnaf point doesn't make sense. A game with guns and fps games don't have to be mutually exclusive ya know.

And since when was adding features that would never happen be going too far?

So basically you are saying the pmdt went too far because they added the turbo mode..... What?

Hopefully I won't have to explain this more than once and people will help me out lmao:

There are ground rules and good judgement put to work. We don't slap characters together and throw a big mess out.

Anime characters, which (obviously) are the majority of the hate-mongers, are in because SSF1 had them, and back when SSF2 was a direct sequel, the game basically sucked up all of the SSF1 characters and added more to them. Quite a few updates were done and quite a few characters added before an actual team formed, and once we had an actual team the direction of the game was modified heavily. At that point though, as any game developer has to do, we assessed our target audience.

One of the reasons why SSF1 was so popular actually were the anime fans. To dangle forbidden fruit in their face and then rip it out of the game after multiple releases would alienate our current fanbase in order to appeal to a new fanbase, and that is probably one of the worst things anyone creating a work to be widely enjoyed can do.

So, to meet in the middle, anime/manga characters in our planned roster were SUPER cut down. Basically the ones that were already done were just polished instead, and we've gone to extreme lengths to make them feel at home in a Smash engine and bring unique playstyles to the table. And for those looking for a more realistic Smash roster, we've added not only underdogs such as Chibi-Robo, but also the big players such as Isaac that everyone's been craving.

Our rule is that potential characters must have appeared on a Nintendo console for a major release. Don't get us wrong - this is still a Nintendo beat-em-up, but our rules are a little less restrictive is all. That rule coupled with good judgement has made our roster into something I'm VERY proud of, and I can't wait for everyone to see everything else.

The idea of a "4th party" is something completely invented by the Smash fandom, anyway. 2nd party characters are characters made in-house or in-partnership by Nintendo, 3rd party are licensed characters. Even the off-the-wall characters still fall under 3rd party, and are definitely still being kept to a reasonable level, less than half in the public release iirc and that's not even considering what the full roster looks like.

this looks like a big angry rant tho <3 but <3

Great read.

Take me for example, I don't give a flying crap about the Naruto manga/anime and yet he's my SSF2 main.

For me in fighting games:
How the character fights > Who the character is

@[TSON] How is the game's engine and physics and techniques. Is it like Melee with L canceling and tons of combos or Smash 4 with barely any techniques but still works? Or in between?

It's really hard to explain. Airdodges are like Smash 4 (Brawl, but unsafe) and our landing lag is as low as L-Canceled landing lag all of the time without any inputs required. Hitstun and gravity are somewhere between 64 and Melee. DI is at Melee levels, and SDI is higher than other Smash games.

Think: Long, satisfying combos at high level and less of a barrier to new players that want to learn to compete. Quite a few character-specific ATs as well.

People are still freaking out about Goku and co.? Saying three characters that are only still in because they were programmed before the roster was revised taint the entire game? Get off your high horse, he's fun to play as.

It;s a booth, not a bracket. There's a huge difference. They haven't taken PM's place or are anywhere near it.

They should reveal Ike and Sailor Moon then i'll totally play this game.
I don't know about Ike, but no more anime/manga characters will be added beyond those that are already programmed. That was confirmed a while ago.

Really? I don't think it'd kill anything if they just added Sailor Moon. :/

Ike though needs to happen.

That's up to them. The roster was finalized in 2010, and nobody except the developers knows its full extent.

For the same reason, Sm4sh characters other than anyone that might have been coincidentally planned before will not be added, so don't expect Robin or Lucina. Sm4sh was first announced a year after SSF2's roster was finalized.

The Zero series is my personal favorite out of all the Mega Man series. Jamming that Departure theme!!
