I do see a huge amount of Marth players, personally. We get to play Smash at work when we're on break, and I see Marth all the time. The thing is, when it comes to these C-Stick Marth players, I can almost read 'em like a book, like Samus, for some reason.

I use Sheik, and when I first started playing, I tried Marth as well, and I personally found Sheik MUCH easier to use, as well.

I just went to a tourny the other day and 9 out of 18 people played marth including Tink who won with out losing a single game. I was the only fox there, everyone else was either captain or shiek. no lie

lol you make it sound like there are hundreds of Marths going around winning tournies but in reality its really just the same players over and over.
well, azen/ken/m2k have been winning all the major tournaments, historically, and PC some of them. Since tiers are based on tournament results, that would put marth as 1st and falco as 2nd.

If fox/falco are so overplayed, wouldn't they win more major events?

They're overplayed by average-above average players who want easy wins in tournaments through technical skill.

But you're definitely right about Marth being a 'better' character, as is evident by the tournament results you're talking about.

all characters must be technical to do well in tournaments, not just fox/falco. Marth has his own set of technical abilities as well.

There's lots of mixed skill levels for all of the top tiers, just making a note that marth generally wins the major events.

except Jigglypuff. There's a Jigglypuff player in Florida who doesn't even ****ing l-cancel and still places Top 8 in some (admittedly less competetive, meaning no Shiz/Speedn/etc) tournaments. (Florida tournaments average 40-50 people)

PC switched to fox, so doesn't that make fox #2? His falco did well in 2006 but that was last year. Falco took a hit in popularity and success in 07.

With the whole branched off debate about whether Sheik or Marth is easier to pick up, I think it all comes down to the nature of the player. If someone is naturally oriented towards the spacing aspect of the game then they'll probably find it easier to use Marth and if someone is naturally accurate with projectiles and good at catching their opponent mid air with a Fair then they'll probably be better geared towards Sheik (though that last Fair thing probably applies to both characters). It really shouldn't matter which one's less difficult to pick up anyway. The focus should be on winning no matter how easy it was for either you or your opponent to start using their character.

Now to get down to the topic of the thread. There are a lot of Marth users right now. And IMO that fact is kind of irritaing being that people only jumped on the Marth bandwagon because of the skill players like M2K and Ken have shown ( I'm personally a fan of the tiara) But honestly, If you fear that your potential wth Marth will peak with you still being among the mediocrity of other Marth users then you should probably find another character with hom your potential will allow you to stand out. I believe that through dedication and practice I can prove myself to be a skillful Marth player one day (that's the hope anyway) and if you don't feel the same about your Marth, Santa, then he's probably not the character for you. This is just an opinion though so don't take this as though I'm telling you that you suck or anything like that.

:( Blue gets my name wrong on Youtube and now Miggz gets it wrong on Smashboards. My name is SOPF with an F. Unless that was a typo, then my bad. Hopefully my post did help to end the argument anyway.

My bad then Blue
Oh and thanks for actually using the elongated form of my name a while back. It's been so long since I had seen it I almost forgot what it was.

yea, there are more marth players out there, or atleast people like me(I main samus btw) who pick him up as a second. hes definetly not easy to use, between him and shiek it shouldnt even be an argument...anyways, I think marth is an excellent character to use, because it forces you to learn the mechanics in the game, mainly shuffling, tech chasing, chain grabs, JC grabs etc etc. now that i picked up marth, my shffl game is alot better when i use characters like pikachu and young link.

Oh, it's not that I'm not confident in my ability as a Marth player, I'm just using logic to determine that, with so many other Marths out there, there have to be at least 9 or 10 that are as good as me or better. Hell, just in MD/VA, there's probably 5 or 6. That's depressing for me. It's really optimistic BS if you think that you can come into this community so late and rise out of the ranks of the mediocre with such a popular character. It's not like you're going to be one of a very small number of players devoting yourself to improving your Marth... your remark strikes me as exactly the problem with competitive Smash these days. It's completely ceased being about having the most fun you can possibly have, it's all about who you can win with the most. If you don't do well enough with your current character, just pick a new one! (usually a higher tier one, too)

Like I said in my last post, I'm not planning on deserting Marth any time soon, because he's just my favorite character. I wouldn't care if they went and ported him to Brawl and gave him the Kirby treatment (nerfed him to hell, in case anyone didn't know what I'm talking about.) I'd play him no matter what, unless they really changed his moveset and playstyle for some stupid reason. And honestly, I think this is a mentality that more people could use; if people didn't always jump on the bandwagon like that, the game would probably be a lot more fun, since we'd get to play a much larger variety of characters.

I am a lil overly competitive but I wouldn't leave Marth either even if I proved to be better with another character. The constant complaining such as " Oh, you're a ***** cause you use Marth and he's got a big *** sword and no weaknesses," or , "You gay cause you ***** out Marth's broken grab range" is getting really old but still I keep the Marth faith ( I'm calling you out on that Pasqual if you're reading this) Oh, and I will prove myself. That probably seems like nothing more than the ranting of some optimistic noob and who knows I might be wrong but I am going to put forth the effort and give it my all to attempt to achieve recognition. YAYZ!

Ha, that's good that you have a positive attitude, at least. Having a negative attitude only makes you worse at the game, I've recently discovered, so from now on... eff the rest of the world, I'm going to be a great Marth player. Everyone else can cry more, from my brother to 90% of the peach playing population of the world ^_^

I love playing against Marth players. The more I face, the new strategies I get to develop against him. I'm getting to the point where I look at someone who chooses Marth and just utter, 'Heh'.

'Course, these are people who don't do short hops, wave dashes, or any other advanced techs.

So what if you don't play as good a marth than the better marth players around? It would still give you an advantage againts some characters who are played by better people sometims which is good.

I think I'm finally beginning to notice this. I went to a Virginia tournament last Saturday, and between my singles matches at some point, I looked around the room. I was astonished to see that, even with 8 T.Vs, there wasn't a single one without a Marth on it. One even showed 2 Marth players! It's starting to really mess with my drive to improve as a Marth player... I really like playing as him, but it seems like it's going to be impossible to become anything greater than a face in a crowd, now. Is this just some sort of weird MD/VA phenomenon, or is the rise of Mew2King really causing such a spike in Marth playership? I mean, I always knew he was one of the most played characters, but not by THIS much, trumping even the spacies. As an interesting side note, Chu Dat was the only one out of the top 4 that doesn't play Marth. M2K, Azen, and KM all played Marth pretty much throughout.

So, what do you all think? Should I be worried about playing Marth when there are so many people that are so much better than me who play him? Am I overreacting? Are all the high-tiers this popular, and I just don't notice it? Should I just wait for Brawl to come out, and see what happens then?
DUDE THATS CUZ MARTH F$%@ ***** EVERYONE

AND FOR THE RECORD SHIEK, AND PEACH GOT TO BE THE 2 EASIEST PPL TO PLAY WITH ALL YOU NEED TO DO WITH SHIEK IS D-THROW, D-SMASH PEACH IS D-SMASH AND SPAM TURN-UPS

You guys really don't know how to approach or pressure well lol...

The first match looked like you were playing on a laggy tv since everything seemed delayed.
But
Pasqual 3-0'd you, and I guess that's what matters.
It was 2-1, but yeah. I've also just started working on Marth about 8 days ago.

And, in SOPF's defense, the first match is his first time playing on our slightly laggy laptop setup. Only 2 or 3 frames but still.

The lag really ****ed me up. I couldn't combo or react as quickly as I wanted to but those are just Johns I guess. the fact o fthe matter is he won, though I will add that when we went to a normal screen I won.

I justed watched the first vid and I gotta say that that was the slowest and worst I think I've evre done. I feel pathetic about that.

I never thought they would remove Marth from Brawl's roster. He's just so universally popular now... still, nothing's guaranteed. I WANT to keep playing Marth, I just have a terrible tendency to always pick ridiculously overplayed/overpowered characters in almost every game that I play, and I don't want to do the same in this game because it's probably my favorite game ever. I want to be more unique than just another garden-variety Marth player, and I doubt that anyone's really capable of rising above garden variety with the incredible amount of skilled Marth players there are out there. I want to become extraordinary in these games because I'll never be able to accomplish it in real life, and I've got a fantasy prone personality... bah, nobody cares about all that.

I saw that poll, but tricked myself into thinking that the reason Marth scored so high was because it was all the scrubs posting, with none of the really good players because they so rarely post in polls and such, but apparently, that's the only reason that his victory wasn't a landslide v_v Ah, well, I digress.
Yeah, I'm the same too, but I'm more of a Fox player than a Marth though; I still love using him. I'll never be able to be that good -- especially since there's no one in my area. :(

I would have closed this thread had I seen it earlier.

It really doesn't add anything constructive to the marth boards plus it's starting to get off topic anyway.

Closed.
