What are some good ways to practice Marth's combos? What stages are good for that? Lotsa FD?

I'm having trouble making it continuous. I can SHDF, Lcancel etc just fine but it seems like I hit them in a way where I can't catch back up even at mid percents. Are there some ways to fix this? Am I not sweetspotting the right opponent? If someone could offer some examples or even a video link, that would be great. I look at combo videos but can't seem to duplicate.

Your problem might be that when you're comboing, you're sweetspotting things that you don't necessarily want to. Some of Marth's combos (and especially fair) are better left un-tippered, or else you could send them off too far to continue comboing.

So, try getting in a little closer on your double fairs so that you hit them further down the sword, that way they won't get knocked back as far, and you can continue the combo.

Keep in mind that the recovery time from a non-tipped hit is much shorter than one from a tippered hit. Your opponent can hit you back if you don't hit with the tip. Personally, I don't have problems with opponents escaping. Perhaps you should dash to short hop to build momentum, kind of like falco's shl?

at lower percents tip the fair at mid to higher try not to tip with the fair. also a tipped fair sends them strait up some times

this post sucks

the combo i pointed out isnt 2 seperate sh fairs. its short hop double fairs.

edit : oops nvm i alrdy explained this in my first post

i usually find myself tippering the first fair, but not the second one, but thats ok cuz i immediately L-cancel to a tippers utilt. even if the utilt isnt tippered it still sets up for a perfect tippered fsmash, most of the time.

another thing, shdf'ing isn't always the best way to go about comboing. Single shffl'd fairs work well. Comboing is situational, you need to know when to single fair, or double fair, or lcancel-->grab or lcancel-->utilt. It depends on their di, but try some shffl'd fairs in there.

You could also replace the second Fair with and Uair instead. It pops them straigt up for an easy grab or up-tilt. You may need to use the C-stick when you SHDF so that you can always follow their DI with the Control stick and still get your Fair out. A SHDF can also be set up with a tipped SHFFL'd Fair. I rarely use the SHDF to start a combo, but I use it quite often to keep a combo going.

Are people using the control stick for the double jump inside ken combos or just the buttons? Seems like it's easier to jump with the stick which leaves your right hand open for your aerial. Thoughts?

when i was bored, from time to time i used to (well i actually still do) put me vs lvl 1 computers on random neutral levels and combo them. mostly common tourny chars like fox\falco\peach\sheik\marth. this gave me a general feeling on what works and what each move does. ofcourse this is nothing compared to real performing comboing in real matches with the tense and the DI, but it still helped me. also watching vids gives you a good general knowledge on what move is the best.

Always use X or Y to jump. I use Y for both jumping and wavedashing; I never use X.

Free up your right hand? That's unnecessary - speed up those fingers!

video suggestions (i've been doing this a lot lately):

any ken video. seriously, he's mastered the flow of combos to the point of making it look easy. his combo usage may look simple, but it's actually VERY creative and VERY effective.

more specifically:
sets between Neo and Ken. they may be old, but they both use almost identical combo styles. it's interesting to watch them go at it.

Ken vs fast fallers is a good way to beat fast fallers (lol.) ken vs mew2king, pc, and bombsoldier recommended.

Marth automatically will stun the opponent longer on the tip. Marth isn't slow so follow up and jump right next to him. Once your next to him do what ever you think will help the most since your already close to him so don't worry too much about him/her flying away, besides you would have another a jump.

i always thought tippers gave more knockback, not stun time.... but i could be wrong

use that U tilt, it almost ALWAYS leads to another attack, except on very high damages
try what i've recently learned: go as if you are going to use a shdf, but don't do the second fair, the quickness of the slash is usually a tipper tha send them upward rather than forward, you can land and jump again if you have time, or just replace your second fair with your jump on to a ledge if the stage has ledges

Yes a tipped attack gives more stun. To see this just look at the Ken combo. At low percents the tipped fair knocks them into the right position for a spike. At high percents a non tipped fair sets them in the right placement but doesn't always work. Sometimes you'll find that the opponent hits you out of it. If a non tipped attack had as much stun as a tipped attack then the Ken combo would be very easy to pull off in this senerio.
