Maybe Sakurai’s been reading up on kirbykid’s “New Move Sets?” series, because it looks like he’s taken it upon himself to give Mario a bit of a facelift in the first part of today’s double update. Ordinarily an update on a veteran’s special moves would be as far removed from “interesting” as one could get, but here… it’s a little different.

Mario, in keeping with the theme of incorporating elements of Super Mario Sunshine into Brawl, has inherited F.L.U.D.D. as his new down special move. How’s it work? Pretty simple. Press down and “B” (yes, Sakurai calls it B, even though the Wiimote-only control will probably use 1, and the classic controller uses “b” for normal attacks), and hold it as long as you want to charge—yes, it’s another one of those special chargeable attacks. (Update 5:55 AM EDT: Sakurai does note that you can charge the attack while shielding, which while we don’t see specifically, raises a slew of questions about that whole situation.)

One curious caveat? When you release, you won’t be doing any damage to your enemies. It will send them flying, though, so perhaps it’ll end up being a decent way to KO people from a distance.

Of course, if Mario’s got a new down special attack, something must have happened to the Mario Tornado, right? Right. Now if only we knew what.

Sakurai ponders, “He still seems to have this move, though. Eh? Is it a normal attack?!” which best I can tell is Japanese for “yes, it’s a normal attack”. My bet is a down smash, but as usual, I could be wrong.
What do you think of the F.L.U.D.D.ed Mario? Will this be of any use at all in gameplay? What about the fate of the Tornado? Give us your thoughts.
Update 4:17 AM EDT: A couple posters are suggesting that the Tornado might now be Mario’s down aerial attack, which is actually a reasonable guess (since they point out we’ve been seeing him do it in the air, and not on the ground).
