Making the most of jab-cancelling

This thread is devoted to discussing jab canceling and possible strategies involved with it. Since I lack opportunities to play Brawl, I have not been able to fully experiment with it, but I can see some potential.

Lucas' Jabs have surprising priority and speed, so I imagine it would be of great use to cancel out opponent attacks, but then cancel into harder hitting punishment.

But enough of my rambling:

How has jab canceling helped you in your Lucas game?

Please share any strategies or experiences you may have.

jab cancelling is risk vs reward. On the low risk low reward end you have a complete jab combo.

On higher risk higher reward you have things like psi magnet and grab.

On the stupid ideas end you have jab cancelling to fsmash, which will fail unless your opponent's asleep or something.

gotta kinda agree with you there. I prefer down smash out of jab cancel because people will most often attempt to spot dodge the jab

Yay for things that only work once!

On the plus side, if you do predict the spot-dodge, that makes it really possible to bait a shield the next time, increasing the jab cancel grab's sucess rate.

I dont get why people say stuff like this only works once....like they expect the person doing it to do it EVERY TIME. Its called mind games. You do full jab combos and every once in a while you throw in a suprise jab cancel. Since you usually do a full jab combo they will usually attempt to spot dodge and instead get a face full of down smash

Good point. The fact that you do it sparingly completely negates the point of saying that it only works if you do it sparingly. [/sarcasm]

And saying mindgames is a vague way of saying that a strategy requires the opponent to expect something that causes their countermeasure to leave them open to whatever it is that you're trying to do.

I prefer to hit opponets at killing percent with upsmash.

Question: How affective a brick wall does a jab canceled into another jab create?(or jab, jab, cancel)

Example: Lucas' jab completely negates Wolf's Fsmash, but the speed of his Fsmash makes doing this as a reaction unrealistic. If you are standing at the optimum spacing for his Fsmash, and keep using the "jab brick wall" described above, is it POSSIBLE for Wolf to break through with his Fsmash if he uses the proper timing?

If not, it can be an effective way of controlling Wolf's approach. All of his other means of attack are much easier to react to and punish, and the animation time of Lucas' jabs are short enough that you can switch to a counter easily.

Yes it is possible for wolf's foward smash to get through the jab if it hit in between jabs where there is no more hitbox and a couple frames of lag.

That's why I mentioned optimum Forward smash range. If Wolf lazers, there is more then enough time to at least stop jabbing and block.
