Sydney is way too big. It takes forever to travel from one place to another.

Note: I was born in Sydney so naturally I would be defending it but it really does suck.

Challenge accepted Vyse :)

Shaya, your arguments are really shallow. There are many reasons why people have left Sydney and flocking to Melbourne or Queensland (links - http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2008/03/02/1204402275498.html, http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/11/12/2087830.htm). Summing things up through a harbour, or a river, or a beach, or weather, rather than actual products of a city... "good looks aren't always enough."

Sydney and NSW is currently the most depressed state in Australia. The pre-olympic hype ended in over-speculation and a subsequent burst, combined with a weak state government that unfortunately has no vision for the city, has left it stagnanting. This has something to do with why there's so many immigrants (not only Americans, everyone from the world) coming down to Melbourne. Sydney's assets are natural and cater well for the one-off tourist. Once you've done those attractions, there is little substance to Sydney, and Melbourne's offerings are greater (better parks/gardens, nightlife, sport-AFL/Aussie Open/Grand Prix/Spring Carnival, architecture, arts, shopping, schools, transport, restaurants), which makes the city more interesting to stay and live, in many people's opinions. Melbourne wasn't always great. It's only been great for the last 10 years, since it entered revival mode.

Sydney has public transport that barely works, has racist ghettos, a trashy nightlife, a crime rate on par with the United States, sub-par shopping, ugly streets and buildings, no city planning whatsoever, all adds up to crap value for money.

It is one thing for people to love their own city - that's reactionary and quite normal. But it's another thing that many people I know from your own city would vouch for Melbourne anyday. That's saying something.

*2 cents*

FYI - anyone who can't find a good beach around Melbourne is a **** tourist. Also, why people are going to Queensland - LMX said it best.

Too much truth in CAOTIC's posts :(
You didn't have to go for the jugular!

I really, really, really, don't like the schools argument though.
Nightlife? Well in Winter Sydneysiders don't like going out in the cold, I know I don't :(.
Better parks? Ho ho ho ho. You even include NSW in that statement.

And the 'once you've seen the attractions, Sydney has little substance' is something I felt was the same reaction except towards Melbourne.

Anyway, god **** you bringing up the Government. And hitting me with my own hate of NSW that is public transport. Shot, hung, destroyed, etc.

It is my pleasure. I am an urban planner by profession, so I work directly with many of these issues, mainly transport and housing affordability (also on a federal level).
