Okay, I have a QUESTION... Why do people swear in God's name if they're atheist? Try and answer that one, it's an enigma that's bugged me all day...

Because it's become a part of English slang.

"There stupid"

I'm not athiestic (agnostic, actually), but if I were, I'd feel insulted that idiots like thee even felt the need to express their anger in such eloquent ways.

Some atheists do it on purpose; others do it out of habit. It's just an expression.

EDIT: Wait no, you forget. We are sinners, and since "Thou shalt not say the Lord's name in vain" is one of the Ten Commandments, then it would be fitting if we were to say "Oh mon Dieu!"

Yeah, because it's part of english slang nowadays. I'm atheistic and I occaisonally shout "God ****it" should the appropriate situation arise.

Kenzo, you're an idiot, plain and simple.

1. The US. Gov't. was formed during a time when religion was still a very major thing.

2. Most Gov't. material has "In God We Trust" on it, it's just a sign of the US. Gov't.

3. While growing up, and people talk about God a lot, his slang kinda catches on.

4. Because Religious freaks like you ask dumb questions like this.

That's a few of the reasons.

--------------------------------

On a very big side note: a joke.

**** : A Theory

In most religions, if you don't belong to that religion, you're going to **** . So, everybody is going to **** .

Now, if people dont' die fast enough, and the rate of souls going into **** is too slow, **** Will Freeze Over.

But, if there is too many people going to **** , too many souls, All **** Will Break Loose.

-----------------

Hope some of y'all get that joke.

BTW, I talked to your god on the phone last night. He told me he's going to send you to a place of eternal torment for being such a sadist, but he still loves you!

In all seriousness though, I would like you to answer some of Azua's questions, and these: Why do you worship the god that you do? Might it be an accident of birth? Is your religion prevalent in your region? (and Azua, sorry if you already knew this, but atheism isn't a religion)

Oh boy, here we go.

Atheism is a state of normalcy. It shouldn't even be a word, just like a-unicornism isn't a word and a-dragonism isn't a word. Atheism, by definition, is simply the lack of belief in a god. That is different from the belief in the non-existence of a god. Religion, on the other hand, is a belief system. You can't base a belief system on nothing at all, that would be pointless.

Ridley, take a joke.

I don't plan to read all of the incoherent posts in this topic, but I'll break it down from my own personal point of view. I don't do it simply because it is slang, but I've heard plenty of 'christians' take their lord's name in vain.

I do it out of the sheer irony that I, a very non-christian, can indulge in the absolute vulgarity of something like exclaiming 'Jesus Christ!' or 'Oh Holy F*ck!' to catch the attention of the dim-wits I am relating to.

Chances are, they believe they are christian, no matter what sins they commit and no matter how lacking they are in their worship.. so it's just a nice way for me to shove something I find to be the shepherd's hook right down those mindless little sheep's throats.

Now, don't take me wrong. I am not tearing down christianity. The world would be a lot -worse- off without it. It is something to cull the mindless majority. Better that they worship something that will, in some form or another, teach them to help rather than harm, than to worship something evil and kill other people's livestock or children.

Oh, my gosh... I've just made a racist of myself (shoots himself violently and lets worms eat his insides)
Seriously, now, all I asked is a question, and now it turns into a flame war. I only agreed with Kenzo because you contradict yourself when you swear on something that you think doesn't exist (which is what I find so funny). I'm agonsitic. It's much better that you don't pick a fight that can't be won or lost. Unfortunately, I was stupid and picked a fight with BOTH of them, which is a big no-no for agonists...

My house... or I think this is my house..... Hey!
The reason that people say 'god' is that god sounds more powerful than gosh. I can also offend people more often with god than gosh. Plus, when people say, "Oh my god", I reply ,"Yesssss...?". The joke is that the people are worshipping me as their god. Yuri is my god anyways, so nyaahhh. :p

Between you and me there's only us.
Its like snap, yo

Lemme lay it down fo' all yall gentiles and jews.

I be chillen in my hizzy, and all of a sudden
crazy sh*t starts to go down. I'm all up and
like "wha da fuh?".

But does that cover all my bases, really?

Nawww, I need other things to say, more
interesting and diversified.

I would refer ye biznotches to the ten
commandments, where it be written:
"Though shalt not take the name of the lord,
thine, in vain, and ****"

Well, yah, so first things first, as a bonda fide
athiest I should make a point of breaking that
fearlessl, yes?

Why stop there? Why not mock the crazy bible
thumpers as much as possible? Well, they say
that imitation is the most sincere form of
flattery, but I've always found parody the most
effective means of condescention. Ergo, I'm all
spouting christian **** right and left, and dog,
I do have an arsenal of it.

My passtime is to take christian ****, and throw
it back at christians? You ever read leviticus?
Man, that books crazy. Unfortunately, we're not
allowed to own canadians, though, only our own
nationality. Ah well, you win some, you lose some,
I suppose.

Anyhow, for you athiests: Keep in mind, them
fundies, they love quoten the scripture. Yessir,
they love their bible. Alot of times there entire
arguements, if they me be called that, are based
on scripture. Every athiest should have a king
james bible, just so he can look up the quoted
passages and make sure that they're not totally
out of context. Alot of times christians will
be all up and like "check it yo, verse whatever
means this" and you can look it up and be like,
"nawww *****, lookee here, in this context, it
means this"

So anyway, this is your friendly local athiest
signing off.

Because anyone who DOES believe in God shouldn't be saying saying "God **** it", because it's blaspheming the name of the Lord. Therefore, the only ones who should be saying it is atheists. The question you should be asking is why do Christians say that stuff, because they're not supposed to.

Also, since I hate Christianity with a passion, what better way to make fun of you crazy people than to blaspheme your religion right in your face? It's very nice.

So pretty much, Kuja, you're entirely off base and utterly wrong. Again. Thanks for trying, though.

BTW, the complete and bitter irony of Kenzo saying "there stupid", and you actually agreeing it, pretty much sums up the whole atheistic side. I always love it when people demonstrate their own stupidity when trying to point out the stupidity of others.

Now you see, I am a god meself, so I use the phrase as a bit of mental note, while talking to myself in thrid-preson:
"god-d@mn you, and god-d@mn you, and...erm...what the fuking hail is this I just sat in? BAH! God-d@mn you all to the infernal depths of h3ll! Eh...I'll d@mn them later..."

Hurtling off on a tangent, the term "atheism" is too broad. Terms vary, but this is how I understand it:

Atheism:

Implicit atheism states no belief in God but no disbelief either.

Explicit atheism is certainty that there is no God. Achieved not through lack of evidence for God's existence (Because absence of proof is not proof of absence) but through logical contradictions in God's existence.

Agnosticism:

Implicit agnosticism is merely "I don't know if there is a god/gods."

Explicit agnosticism (Moi) claims that the existence and nature of a god is fundamentally unknowable.

A note: Though I claim one can not know if there is a god, I may still contend that the credences of theism are inconclusive, that its doctrines are unintelligible, or that it fails to account for the facts of the universe, or is irreconcilable with them.

Nicely put, Massy. I am truly an atheist then, because I do not believe in a god, but I do not feel their isn't the possibility of one. Honestly, I think this is all a waste of our personal time in this topic and it should be closed. I personal say things like, "God **** it" because of the power of the word expresses my fustration in the worst way. If I say, "Gosh **** it" most people assume I'm just a little ticked.

ok that is it you can go ahead and tell your God jokes but keep in mind one thing he loves you more than anything else and then you go and talk crap about. now i am a very proud Christian and i tell you the the truth there is a God and just because you don't see him doesn't mean he is not there. take the wind for example you can't see it but you konw it's there. all the christian out there on the forums should come in here and back me up

Ah, but you can -feel- the wind. That's at least one palpable sense. Touche'!

You know what.. kudo's to you, Jet, for being able to live a life conceived in blind faith. But I cannot do something like that myself. I have to have something that my senses can agree with. Or at least something that seems, through text or spoken word, like it could logically be true. Christianity is -not- one of those things. It is simply too far-fetched for me to put stock in and comply with.

Lets say when I was born, my whole family and everyone I interacted with convinced me that if I jumped off of this particular cliff, I would fly. I've never heard anything else, so I've basically been conditioned into believing the story. When the time comes and I leap off of the cliff.. am I going to fly? No.. my *** is ****ing dead. I'll fall to my doom on the rocks below no matter -how- many times people told me otherwise.

This, I liken to christianity. The reason why so many people believe in it and cannot break from the mould cast about them is because they were conditioned, from birth, to believe in it. Whether this is from family or other outside forces, it doesn't matter.

Same applies to me. I grew up in America.. everyone talks about God this and God that. It was a long time before I could decide for myself that I had no clue God even existed, let alone why I should follow 'His' words. They could have very well been conceived and written by a spiteful, manipulating man who wanted nothing more than to better control his sheep.

And again, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that a christian life is a doomed life like in the scenario above. What I -am- trying to show is just how misleading 'blind faith' can be.

Think about that.

Finally, someone that disagrees with Christians respectfully. Some of you people need to take a lesson from this.

i think all of you need to understand the lesson dat young 'uns come here, and chewing out their fate can ruin their lives. You also need to repsect other's beliefs, and stop critizizing them.

There are many religions in this world, and the one i find most annoying is atheist, not that i hate them, i have atheist friends, but they are the ones that most commonly insult members of the other religions. I respect ALL other religions, and dont critize any 'o them. You all need to stop yelling at each other an respect that others choose to believe other things.

and, when u say "why believe something that others say exists, but u never really see it?"
You all believe in SSBM dont you? well when it was announced, you really didnt see anything, but you still believed it, even though it could have been a scam. Well, preists say God exists, and that we wont really 'see' him until we die, kind like we wont see a game until its finished...

now im just poiting out that atheists, just like all religions, need to respect others, and let them believe what they like, if people always insulted others based on religion, where we be now? most likely all wiped out by nucleur bombs...so why dont we all let this post die...and repect eachother...or would you rather i start insulting you, like a uncivilized cavemen?

peace out

what Christianity is not a blind faith or anything like that. you can go to any true Christian and they will say that Christianity is not a religion it is a relationship with God. this is God's universe it didn't make itself. We were created in his image. the Bottom line is God created us and know other explanation or theory can prove that wrong. THERE IS A GOD

I don't think that that is a proper analogy. We believe in SSBM for reasons far different than God. First and fore-most, Nintendo is a corporation that has created several games in the past. People have seen and played these games. So it's quite obviously something real.

Second, we have likely all played SSB. We can walk into our rooms and turn it on and play it and know it's real. How many of us can go down the street and kick it with Jesus? Not many, I'll tell you that.

Third, based on the fact that Nintendo is real and in general does what it says, and the fact that SSB is real and we've all played it.. that Nintendo saying they're creating something new can be trusted as fact. They offer us screen-shots of the game in progress where as christianity offers it's followers cryptic messages written in ancient times that likely have little to no bearing in present-day life.

So.. bad analogy. Try again.
