The Final Countdown is now playing in your head.

Probably one of the most nostalgic and exhilarating games in the series. Released on August 6, 1993 for us, and the first handheld Zelda game.

It was the first game that didn't take place on Hyrule, mention the Triforce, and didn't have Ganon as the final boss (if you don't count Nightmare). The story of the game begins with Link getting shiprecked during a storm and being washed up on the shore of Koholint Island. He is later informed that the Wind Fish watches over Koholint Island. In order to awaken the Wind Fish, he must venture through dungeons and solve puzzles to find the eight musical instruments. And so begins the adventure that is known as Link's Awakening.

Link's Awakening proved to be commercially successful and sharply influenced most Zelda games to follow. It was later rereleased on the GameBoy Color with updated colorful graphics and a new dungeon.

In this thread, feel free to discuss the epicness that is Link's Awakening. :colorful:

This is probably one of my favorite Zeldas of its era. But unfortunately, my copy (which I got when I found it in a pocket while test driving a vehicle) is broken now and I can't save. And sometimes when I start a new game it glitches and makes a high pitched noise when Link is in bed in the house at the beginning and everything goes away except the bed, Marin, and Link, who is in the bed, as a chicken. Wtf 0_o

But I actually have the awesome original version!

Overall one of my top favorite Zelda games ever. It had an amazing soundtrack for a gameboy game. Catchy tunes and the use of a great plot. It had it's humor like most Zelda games and there were cameos from other Nintendo franchises. Puzzles were difficult if your not familiar to most Zelda tricks. The boss battles each had it's own indivisual style and will always leave a mark in my memories.

I love this game to death! <3

Forget just Zelda, this is one of my favorite games of all time. I had the original on the massive brick that was the first Game Boy, and this game was one of the first we had. Since I was only ~6 when I started, it took me years on and off to beat it, but I was rarely discouraged. And when I finally beat it, I was so excited! That was a good day. If only our copy hadn't died, I'd play it again. I think I can safely say that it is my favorite handheld game that I've ever played. It even beats Pokemon, and I've put hundreds of hours into Pokemon.

I absolutely agree. Ballad of the Wind Fish is probably one of the greatest Zelda songs ever. "You got Marin! Is this your big chance?"

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a glitch in the DX version where Link's tunic turns red (but not the red tunic from the color dungeon), his face turns black, and his attack power doubles but without the explosion effect of the normal red tunic? I got it at some point on Toronbo Shores, after I had had a Piece of Power that just wouldn't go away, and I got worried and went into the cave there to get rid of it. I also noticed that from the pause screen, when I pressed Select to see the pop-up screen that showed Link's tunic color, heart pieces, etc., that the tunic part was glitchy. The rest of the game proceeded normally (in fact, the doubled power was quite helpful), and when I eventually got the red tunic from the color dungeon, Link's appearance and the pause screen glitchiness corrected themselves.

A quick search of Google yielded this:

squeak_5hi7@hotmail.com adds (slightly edited):

...I went though the first dungeon, then went into the Mysterious Forest and kept killing the goblin guys, going back to Mabe Village, then went back to the forest and killed a guy who dropped a Piece of Power. But when I picked it up with my sword by swinging, I hit and killed another guy and became red!? I tried to do it, again but it wont work.

Jelly Soup says:

This sounds a bit different that pandaren emperor's glitch. The Piece of Power makes Link flash red for a limited time. You timed the sword swing so as to get the power boost AND kill the monster at the same time. The game got, for lack of a better word, confused for a time and the flashing effect didn't take place. By this same logic, it would be possible to make Link turn blue by getting hit in the same moment as picking up a Power Acorn.
While this could be what happened, I'm inclined to say the change did not happen when I picked the Piece of Power up, although I can't say that for certain. If it has any significance at all, I vaguely recall (this happened 10 years ago, so again, I can't say for sure) first noticing Link had changed color after I left the cliffs in the southwesternmost square of Toronbo Shores, some time after getting the Piece of Power.

This game is amazing. It should be played by every Zelda fan. DX version is even better.

I still love Manbo's Mambo, and The Ballad of the Wind Fish is one of the best Zelda songs ever. Red Tunic FTW?

oh and the magic rod. Best Zelda item ever. nothing tops it.

and I am posting my signature so people can appreciate HotHead :)

edit- just appreciate this!

This game was great, I loved it. I would say it was my favorite Zelda game to date. (I still think it's around here somewhere.)

And yes, red tunic is FTW.

Isn't this one of the Zelda games that you can name your hero "ZELDA" and the song playing will change? That is so epic.

Yeah, the menu screen music becomes more epic if you name yourself ZELDA. I've never done it, but I've heard the song, and it's pretty awesome.

Does it have unlight torch things?

Try sprinkling magic powder on them.

Truthfully I can't remember what the second dungeon is...

Is it the one in the swamp?

This is my favorite Zelda game, the first one i played in my childhood

Everything in it was awesome, from jacking items and getting zapped by the shopkeeper

I think it set my standard for the Zelda game too high because when I played Link to the Past, I thought it sucked (in comparison)

@Psycho & Blazing: I believe the name of the dungeon was the Bottle Grotto.

Or something like that.

Yeah, it's the Bottle Grotto. Hence the plethora of bottles, and the boss. And the shape of the dungeon. That was a good one, but the one room, that room... The stone slab spoke of that room and how to succeed there. "First, defeat the imprisoned Pols Voice. Last, Stalfos." I was ~6-7 and had never played Zelda before, so how was I to know which was which? Plus, I didn't know that it referred to that room anyway. Such, I could figure it out now easy, but then, we had to call the Nintendo help line to figure it out. Great dungeon though.

Of course, the Eagles Tower was an awesome dungeon too. The mechanic with the heavy ball and the columns made things quite difficult, but I really liked it, especially post-transformation.

I'm pretty sure I played LA before I ever played any Mario games, as the only system I had before our old GameBoy was my Sega Genesis, and we definitely got Zelda before any Mario games. Thus, the cameos didn't stick out to me until quite a bit later. Didn't even realize it was a Yoshi doll until even later than that, once I finally beat the game and started over. Good times.

It was my first GBC-Game. I played it more often then any other Zelda-Game. I like it very much.

Only the bossfights were much too easy. Especially the final form of Dethl. A shoot in his eye with the boomerang, and you are done. The only annoying boss was the first... >_>

But i like it very much, the red/blue tunic, the photos which from i never got all... =/

All in all a very good game. =)

The fish. Easiest boss ever.
Yes, absolutely right. I can't remember any boss that was that easy.
The funny thing is: In MM is the fish the most difficult boss^^

It took me forever to beat the final boss. I also went in there with a lv 1 sword....
Yeah, ok, that explains it^^
I assume you also didn't have the boomerang, did you?

The worst thing is if you go down there and then have no magic powder :chuckle:

My first Zelda game. I remember my cousin loaning it to me at age 6 with a file in Eagles Tower. Yes, my first playthrough was starting at dungeon 7. -_-

But I loved my time playing (despite not understanding much) and will treasure those memories of that evil Egg maze (didn't yet know about the trading thing until sometime later when exploring).

*sigh* Marin. One of the first girls to truly like Link...
