Link is the only main Nintendo charactor who actually is (or in some people's view has been) engaged. That gives him my respect. Look at Mario, he's saved Peach how many times? Link actually got somewhere with a princess.

But not for love for Zelda, but for the Triforce...

I guess when it all comes down to it, all Link cared about was the Triforce.
The only true concern Link shows in OoT is for the Triforce and Navi. Not even for characters like Saria does he show much care for. Yes, it is implied, but he's fairly cold towards her, his childhood friend.

It's a bit more suggestive though, as they tried to keep the emotional connections between Link and other characters actually between YOU and the other characters. They didn't want to blatantly describe how Link feels because he's simply the link between the player and the game and with that, I have to leave.

I always saw him as close to Saria. He didn't show it really with his expressions, but he showed it through his actions. It's tricky because the nature of playing a game makes it not seem like his actions, but our own, but if you look at what he does as motivated by factors within the game, rather than the desire to finish the game, he does show affection for Saria. He goes to find her once he has the Hookshot as Sheik recommended. Once he fails to find her in Kokiri Village, he battles his way through the Lost Woods, the Sacred Forest Meadow, and the Forest Temple just to find her. Yes, he's looking for a sage, and yes we all knew it was her well before we learned it in game, but Link didn't, and he still went to save her.

Plus, earlier, he goes back to visit her after seeing Zelda. Why? For us, to learn Saria's Song to progress through the game, but for Link, because he wants to see her and tell her about his new adventure because they're friends.

But you see, Link and Saria are simply friends and nothing more, because they cannot be anything more. Saria has always been aware that Link was bound to leave the forest, and Link becomes aware as he becomes an adult that Saria is a Kokori and will always remain a child.

On the other hand, Link and Malon were always the same age, and there is nothing separating them.

Oh yes, I'm not arguing that Link and Saria should be a couple. I'm just saying that there was a definite emotional connection there. I agree with the Malon theory anyway. It makes the most sense, and would be pretty simple, since Talon offers her to you and all. :)

Up and down the produce aisle!
Actually if i remember correctly, Link just up-and-leaves Saria... really fast.

See, look! He simply backs away a couple of steps and then sprints away. She's like "We will be friends forever and I hope you and I can visit..." and he just escapes.

So... I doubt anything was ever between Saria and Link. I think Link is incapable of loving ANYONE. Thats probably the best hero attribute to ever have. Love is a weakness in a sense, and as such it weak-spot for Link. Therefore, Ganon or somebody else could easily attack that weak spot.

I like that idea. After all, in Star Wars, Jedi are not allowed to love. Remember what happened to Anakin Skywalker when he fell in love?

Although I still think he shares a slightly romantic relationship with Malon...

I always thought he had to run away because he was too emotionally attached to Saria. He knew that if he stayed any longer, he couldn't bring himself to leave.

But maybe that was just me.

I always thought he ran because due to his age he didn't know how to respond to Saria and to express his affection as well. I love that cut scene, even though it breaks my fragile heart each time.

As for Marin, she is definitely Link's best match-up in any Zelda game. She's the girl of his dreams, and in a very literal sense, the only girl he ever got. What I also find interesting is how her being a romantic pair in LA hints at other games. She is said to very strongly resemble Zelda, so in his dream, Link had his dream-girl look like Zelda. Of course, this is most likely the ALttP Link, as LA was made as a sequel for it originally. Also, Malon and Talon are clearly inspired by Marin and Tarin somewhat, because of their similar names and relationship to each other and Link. Marin and Malon are also both singers. It all just hints that Malon is OoT Link's match even more that OoT itself suggests.
