To add onto KirkbyKaze's post, you can make things a bit easier on yourself while doing this by buffering Z during your roll to the ledge so that you won't have to worry about applying the correct amount of pressure to a trigger button.

I usually just grab, facing the ledge, keep Z held, and then roll with Z.

To add onto this, do you have to let go of your shield as you get hit for this to work? A friend of mine tried to do this to me the other day as I was recovering, and instead of grabbing the ledge he went flying below me. He claimed it was because he didn't let go of the shield.

Johns or is there something else to it?

As far as I am aware, one does not need to let go of the shield to perform this (unless I somehow subconsciously do it myself =/). I have also seen the would-be edge-guarder plummet downwards; I believe that that is caused by absolute pixel-perfect spacing on the up-B return, although that is a rare occurrence indeed.

Alright good to know. Also another thing I've noticed is that, I've had Marth grab the ledge with Up B even if someone does the lightshield edgeguard. I think I might've had the perfect distance or something along those lines, because it didn't even touch the shield.

Just face towards the middle of the stage, light shield angling down wards and out. Then when he hits you FF to the ledge. Because if you don't Marth can FF and grab it before you

the reason you'd fall off the side and not grab the edge when light-shielding:

You are holding the control stick in the 'away' direction for too long (i.e.: even after you've fell off the stage) and you unintentionally d.i. to your doom.

If you hold the control stick after you've been knocked off you'll d.i. past the edge and fall without grabbing it. Its like Fox's firefox sweetspot basically. You are supposed to let go of the control stick after you fall off so you don't accidentally d.i.

I think there are other reasons for failing a lightshield edgeguard though.

With Marth if you try to lightshield edgeguard I think you have to do something along the lines of DIing toward the stage?

Because sometimes I plummeted off the stage trying to use lightshield edgeguarding and the recovering Marth didn't do a perfect up-b at all.

Does it have something to do with like floatiness or something? Cuz I never really have this problem with CF,Falco, or Fox but I do have some issues with it using marth and peach.

Which is ... weird....

With the floatier characters, you want to DI away and down from the stage, to ensure that you buffer a fastfall and grab the edge. Make sure you don't hold away or down while in the tumble animation near the edge tho; you won't grab the edge.

No, you don't have to JC shine to make this work. What a ridiculous question!

And Marth can still grab the ledge if he sweetspots the edge; lightshield edgeguard only works if Marth's up B pokes the shield.

my best friend plays marth so i will try that on him..
If he gets past you and lands on the stage, you will still fall to hanging on the ledge. Then its time to ledgehop over him and bair him back out/drill shine him off stage.
