Secondly, we're gonna start voting on Sonic's moveset, which to do so, please refer to this poll:

Job #10: Submit an assist character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series

With assists confirmed to be a thing, it's time we vote on our first one! Just detail what they'd do when summoned out and we're good.

That said, it's important to note that this will deconfirm that character for a playable spot later on. We still have 3 more Sonic characters left to add eventually, so instead of thinking about what characters would be next after Sonic or whatever, think about what characters you think would specifically make for fun assists.

With 3 Sonic characters left I think it's fair to say that Rouge likely will not be making the playable roster with the likes of Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Eggman, Metal Sonic and Amy ahead of her in terms of overall importance.

Rouge as an incredibly talented thief will be able to steal away some of your opponents special meter when summoned, delaying their All Star move and giving half of what she steals to the summoner to boost their All Star meter slightly.

The visual is her swooping at the opponent, and if she makes contact she will slide past them triumphantly holding part of the special bar and stating "I never fail my mission" before disappearing.

Despite stating this, she can be dodged, but she will swoop a total of three times at any opponents before quitting out of frustration.

She can also be hit which will remove a swoop from her total attempts.

Rouge will disappear upon a successful steal regardless of how many swoops she has left.

Job #10: Big the Cat (and Froggy!)

Big is a large cat who lives in Mystic Ruins and first appeared in Sonic Adventure. Despite his stature, Big is a simple and kind person who nevertheless is fiercely protective of his friends. Even though he's comfortable with his tranquil life, he keeps getting into shenanigans due to his friend Froggy's bad habit of running off.

When summoned as an assist character, Big appears behind the player, marks the nearest target with his fishing rod, and casts its line out. The bait of the fishing rod can travel the length of most stages and requires careful timing to dodge. If Big can't snatch anything, he'll just shrug and run off to find Froggy. If he only comes across an item along the way, he'll simply reel them in and throw them to his summoner.

However, if he successfully catches an opponent, he'll pull on the line and deal damage to them along the way. This can be mashed out of at low percents but at high percents, Big will end the attack by bellyflopping on the opponent and dealing significant damage and knockback (Body Press). If we're doing assist characters to have two different effects, Body Press can simply be his second effect. After a job well done, Froggy jumps to Big's head out of nowhere and they return to the sidelines together.

Big makes sense as an assist character, as while he's not as prominent as most others to become playable, he's been around since Sonic Adventure and was part of the main characters in that era. He also has an outstanding design that can add some variety to others from the same franchise. Also, look at his face, isn't he just adorable?

Tails Doll is an unlockable racer in the game Sonic R, who was manufactured by Dr. Robotnik to do whatever the plot was in that game, I dunno I forgot. Tails Doll is one of the most memorable one-off characters from the series due to it's status as a CreepyPasta icon, making me feel he's important enough to warrant a cameo in this game, plus it'd be nice to give appreciation to the long-thought dead old characters of the series.

Being a fairly basic AT, all it does is float up and down while moving left to right (with the AI being programed to never fall off the stage). Tails Doll will also remain on stage for around 15 seconds, they aren't affected by attacks, and stuns the opponent dealing damage (I don't know how much Stamina will be default, but know it'd be the equivalent of 2% in Smash Bros.).

It's too early to say, we don't even have 1 AT and we only have 4 fighters. Do note I think Tails Doll would have a prominent use for Slow-Heavy-Hitters trying to close the distance gap in a fight, and fast characters can send it the opponents way to follow the AT and apply more pressure (as not only are they against the fighter, but they also want to avoid TD)

Job #11: Akira Yuki moveset

I may or may not have this laying around somewhere for a while. I'm not an expert on Virtua Fighter so any fans can feel free to correct me on any mistakes.

Moveset:

General playstyle:
Like most of his crossover appearances, Akira's moveset is tweaked to be a little more beginner-friendly. Despite this, he's still one of the hardest characters to master in the game. He excels at throws, combos, and mid-range brawls, with his higher stamina and weight allowing him to survive for long. On the other hand, he has no projectiles or notable movement options which can leave him at disadvantage against zoners and fast characters like Sonic. He's also a lot better on the ground than he is on the air. Akira possesses a variety of fast attacks with poor recovery time, rewarding intelligent exploitation of rock-paper-scissor scenarios but punishing him for bad decision-making and guesses.

Notable normals: Akira fights with Bājíquán, a martial art featuring powerful elbow strikes, punches, hip checks, and strikes with the shoulder, delivered with explosive, short-range power. Almost all of his moves are lifted directly from his origin games. Some notable ones being his Body Check forward tilt where he hits the opponent with his back, his Palm Thrust forward smash that deals immense knockback, his Low Kick down smash that only hits in front of him, his Dropkick forward aerial that's borrowed from his opponent Kage-Maru, and his down throw Pound, which can uniquely deal more damage if you mash the button.

Akira retains some of his alternate moves from Virtua Fighter. For example, his get-up attack can be Heel Kick or Foot Swipe depending on whether you hold down or tap the input. They both deal the standard damage but send the opponents at different angles. Similar to fighting game characters in Smash, he also has a few input-required moves and an auto-turn in 1 vs 1 battles.

Specials:

Neutral Special: Houken Youshi Senrin Soushou. Akira swings his hands to front and back if the special button is pressed, hitting both sides. In order to carry out with the rest of the move (a low strike with the lower leg and a back check), Down-Forward-B, then Back-B needs to be inputted. This move is difficult to execute fully but deals immense damage and knockback with the last hit. Akira can stop after the second hit in order to switch to a different combo. The first attack by itself is weak but is good at dealing with pressure.

Side Special: Hontei Goko Hazankou/Tetsuzankou. A move that can act as two different attacks depending on how the side special command is inputted.
If it's done with a tilt, Akira slams his foot forward with a standing kick, thrusts the heel of his palm forward and finally slams his back and shoulder to the opponent if rest of the hits connect. This attack does decent damage, and the initial kick can actually negate the intangibility on rolls and directional air dodges. The third part of the attack is Akira’s signature Tetsuzankou body check which deals decent damage and can KO at very high percents. Notably, when the full combo connects, it does more damage than Akira's All-Star move.

However, if a smash Side-B is inputted, this move becomes a raw Tetsuzankou, and becomes much more powerful. It has a hitbox very close to Akira’s body that does massive damage and can KO at early to middle percents. If a smash Side-B back (as in the opposite direction that Akira is facing) is inputted, he performs a back-turned Tetsuzankou, which is just as strong as the forward-facing one, only a few frames faster.

Down Special: Tsuutenhou/Moukou Kouhazan/Teiro Kanpo/Hyosatai. Akira performs an upward strike with his fist that can knock opponents off balance if it’s used to interrupt an attack. This attack has super armor. If Akira can’t do a powerful punish in time, he can hit down-B again and default to Moukou Kouhazan, a simple palm strike. If Akira is hit by an attack during the initial strike, this attack acts as a counter and he can retailiate. Depending on what kind of move is connected, he can perform either Teiro Kanpo, an upwards palm strike, against aerial attacks or Hyosatai, a simultenous low kick and punch combo from the same side, against ground attacks, or a crouching guard against projectiles which negates the attack.

Up Special: Utankyaku/Renkantai. Akira does a leaping kick called Utankyaku when the move is inputted. Hitting the special button again results in a second kick, turning the move into Akira’s Renkantai. Both parts are capable of KO’ing, and the question as to whether it’s going to be one kick or two can mix up opponents. This move has a very poor recovery distance.

All-Star Move: Hougeki Unshin Soukoshou. Akira slams his foot down, creating a shockwave that drags the nearest opponent into a semi-cinematic that can also harm the bystanders. During the move, the kicks the opponent upwards with his knee, slams them downward with a chop and then executes his finishing combo: He does a crouching palm strike before moving past the flying opponent, stops them forcefully with his back and finally hits them with both of his open palms, creating a small explosion; all while the kanji for the move appear in the screen.

Other:

Aesthetics:
Akira is based from his Virtua Fighter 5 appearance. He's voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki in all languages. Most of Akira's sound effects are taken from Virtua Fighter games. His default costume is his red and blue "B" alt but his classic black and white gi costumes and his swimsuit are available as palette swaps. Pictures below might give an idea about how they might look like:

Entrance animation: Akira walks to the stage and raises his fist. Occasionally, he can say “Kono toki-wo matteta-ze!” (I’ve been waiting for this moment!)

Taunts:
Taunt 1: Akira tightens his headband.
Taunt 2: Akira jumps at where he stands and grins while saying “Koko kara ga goban da!” (I’m just getting started!)
Taunt 3: Akira turns his back to the camera and shouts “Motto ore-wo atsuku sasete-kure!” (You gotta fire me up more than that!)


Victory Animations:
Victory 1: Akira does a standing Bājíquán pose after bringing his foot down, yelling “Ora ora ora!!” (Come on, come on, come on!). Based on his victory animation from JoJo Virtua Fighter.
Victory 2: Akira kicks forward twice, spins his hands around before bringing them together and exclaims “Jū-nen hayain da yo!" (You're ten years too early!). Based on his iconic victory animation and quote from Virtua Fighter 5.
Victory 3: Akira swings his fists outward after punching twice and turning his back to the camera while muttering “Mada owari ja nae ka? Tsuka ze!” (Still not giving up yet? Get up!). Based on his victory animation from Virtua Fighter 2.

Rouge the Bat will be our very first assist! Though, considering Big also got quite the amount of points and Sonic would most likely have more than one assist, I've decided to pull a sneaky and include the top 2 instead: so both Rouge and Big will be added as assists!

Akira moveset submissions are still going on for a while, but in the meantime...

Job #12: Submit a Virtua Fighter stage

Aight, things are gonna start getting spicy from now on:

-First off, with this and the Akira moveset submissions, we're gonna start delving into IPs that less people here are likely familiar with compared to something like Sonic, so I'm gonna have to stress even harder that y'all have some time to do your research.

-Secondly, while we technically have done a stage-related prompt already in the past, Green Hill was already locked in - we just decided on what it'd be like. This is the first time we're straight-up debating what location we're including, which should make things a lot more interesting.

With that said, same deal as last time - just describe the layout and if ya feel like it, you can also include a tracklist of 16 songs max. Worth noting as well that if you want to, you can include one or two "misc." SEGA tracks in your music list like Smash did before Ultimate put them all together - provided they fit the stage in some way (for example: same genre, same devs, just generally fitting the tone of the stage, etc)

Job #12: Virtua Fighter Stage (The Shrine)

This stage is based on Aoi Umenokoji's arena in Virtua Fighter 5 and it's updates.

As the name implies, it takes place on a large ring in the middle of a lake, with a ninja shrine and cherry blossom trees in the background, even having various characters appearing as cameos such as Pai Chan, Sarah & Jacky Bryant, Wolf Hawkfield, Lion Rafale, Aoi Umenokoji and Kage-Maru, working basically like King of Fighters Stadium in layout alongside low fences, except with swimming water on the ground besides a ring at its sides.

Since one of the plans involve using two more reps from Virtua Fighter besides Akira, some cameos may likely be omitted.

Job #12: Virtua Fighter stage (Statues)

Statues arena is Akira's character stage in Virtua Fighter 5. It's a square arena surrounded by low fences. The arena is surrounded by large pillars and statues that loom over the fighters. It's a simple stage with no interactable parts aside from the fences which can prevent fighters from getting knocked out at certain angles.

I've struggled somewhat with Virtua Fighter content even after trying to do some research, so I may skip over that and head straight to Job 13.

Job 13: Sonic Item - Power Sneakers

An old classic. When this monitor appears fighters can bust it open for a speed boost of 20 seconds.

Akira might be slow but when he knocks this open he'll be in for a far easier time of catching up to the speedy Sonic...unless Sonic breaks it first.

Job 13: Original Item - Periscope

Sega's very first arcade machine(1966!), the Periscope when grabbed in Battle of Ages gives the user the ability to fire five high powered torpedoes at their opponents.

The item looks like the front of a submarine with the periscope sticking above.

When picked up, the character looks through the periscope and shoots. The torpedoes fire from the front of the submarine part.

This item can be jumped with, but the torpedoes only fire in a straight horizontal line, so line it up well!

As an added bonus the submarine front acts like a shield, although it won't protect you from attacks from behind, allowing opponents to dodge past you and strike behind whilst you ready a torpedo.

Sonic Item:

Wisp Capsule




This item will appear just as it does in Sonic it will hover slightly above the ground and inside this capsule would be one of several Wisp colors each one having a different effect, hitting it with several attacks will free the wisp giving the person who freed it an effect.

White Wisp
This is the most common and will give the user more All-star charge and will slightly heal the user

Violet
This will summon a black hole that draws items and characters towards it

Crimson
This gives the user more air dashes, and consecutive Air-dashes deal damage.

Red
This makes the users attacks deal fire damage

Jade
This wisp will make the user invisible

Blue
this replaces all items on screen with healing items.

Pink
This gives the user's shield and roll slight damaging properties.

Green
This makes the user lighter

Black
This spawns a giant explosion, this one is the rarest.

Original Item:

SEGA Snacks

These are healing items in the same vein as food from smash, but each unique food item is themed around SEGA properties.

Invincible Barrier: One of the most recurring items in the Sonic series. Upon breaking this item, a fighter will get full immunity to any damage and knockback for about 10 seconds but cannot use or charge their Assist or All-Star move. Visually, they get enveloped in an aura consisting of several twinkling white stars that leaves star trails while the background music changes to "Invincibility" from Sonic the Hedgehog.

Glove: One of the pickup box items in All-Star Racing Games. Upon touching the item, the fighter will have a baseball glove constantly positioned at their backs and stops any projectiles. If it stops a thrown item, the player will automatically equip it. This item will linger around for about 15 seconds.

I really liked this idea. Though, how orange rocket would interact with Sonic when his up special already has him turn into it?

This game has got me doing my research into SEGA's past and I found some things really interesting.

  • I'm surprised that the Master System did quite as badly in North America and Japan as it did as it was an absolute smash hit here in Europe as well as South America and the Oceania. As a Brit, this was easily as well loved as the Mega Drive/Genesis system over here.
  • Even more surprising is that the Master System is STILL steadily selling in Brazil to this very day apparently. That's a 32 year run. That's insane.
  • The Sega Saturn never had a proper Sonic title and it seems Sega briefly tried to phase Sonic(who wasn't as popular in Japan as in the west) out with them pinning hopes on Bug!, Clockwork Knight and Astal as the new 'mascots'.
  • Before Sonic was the mascot there was Alex Kidd, before Alex Kidd there was Opa Opa and before Opa Opa there was Professor Asobin, who's only official game appearance(as in not just in manuals) was in the Dreamcast swansong title Segagaga.
  • Virtua Fighter crossed over with fellow Sega 3D fighting IP, Fighting Vipers, in a game called Fighters Megamix. The most interesting thing is that one of the playable fighters is a car from Daytona USA.
  • Fighting Vipers itself had Pepsiman as a secret fighter.
  • Alex Kidd's brother, Prince Egul, starred in his own game one year prior to Alex's debut in the game Pit Pot.
  • Shenmue was originally going to be a Virtua Fighter RPG starring a young Akira Yuki.
  • Akira, Kage-Maru and Lau-Chan are the only ones to have officially won a Virtua Fighter tournament, with Lau winning the first, Akira the second and then Kage winning both the third and fourth.
  • Tails had two games dedicated to himself, one of which was a Metroidvania style title where he'd use bombs and even napalm(!?) to defeat his opponents.
  • The birds Sonic and friends rescue, Flickies, originated in the arcade title Flicky, which was a big hit in the arcades for Sega.
  • Arle Nadja didn't originate in Puyo Puyo but an RPG series called Madou Monogatari.
  • Sega created a 3D Streets of Rage like game called Spikeout in arcades. I've never even heard of this game before, but the sequel(which was no where near as good) was brought to the Xbox. I recommend looking it up though if you like beat em ups.
  • Sega has their own Donkey Kong knock off game, called Congo Bongo. It differed from Donkey Kong by being isometric and even including some aspects of Frogger.

Also for anyone interested; Steam is currently doing a Eastern companies sale atm.

The SEGA sales include franchises like Shenmue, Space Channel 5, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Yakuza, Persona, Sonic the Hedgehog, Bayonetta, Sonic and Sega All Star Racing, NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio, Valkyria Chronicles and the Gensis/Mega Drive Collection with some of them going for next to nothing.

  • Virtua Fighter crossed over with fellow Sega 3D fighting IP, Fighting Vipers, in a game called Fighters Megamix. The most interesting thing is that one of the playable fighters is a car from Daytona USA.
  • Fighting Vipers itself had Pepsiman as a secret fighter.
  • Alex Kidd's brother, Prince Egul, starred in his own game one year prior to Alex's debut in the game Pit Pot.
  • Shenmue was originally going to be a Virtua Fighter RPG starring a young Akira Yuki.
  • Akira, Kage-Maru and Lau-Chan are the only ones to have officially won a Virtua Fighter tournament, with Lau winning the first, Akira the second and then Kage winning both the third and fourth.
  • Tails had two games dedicated to himself, one of which was a Metroidvania style title where he'd use bombs and even napalm(!?) to defeat his opponents.
  • The birds Sonic and friends rescue, Flickies, originated in the arcade title Flicky, which was a big hit in the arcades for Sega.
  • Arle Nadja didn't originate in Puyo Puyo but an RPG series called Madou Monogatari.
  • Sega created a 3D Streets of Rage like game called Spikeout in arcades. I've never even heard of this game before, but the sequel(which was no where near as good) was brought to the Xbox. I recommend looking it up though if you like beat em ups.
  • Sega has their own Donkey Kong knock off game, called Congo Bongo. It differed from Donkey Kong by being isometric and even including some aspects of Frogger.

Also for anyone interested; Steam is currently doing a Eastern companies sale atm.

The SEGA sales include franchises like Shenmue, Space Channel 5, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Yakuza, Persona, Sonic the Hedgehog, Bayonetta, Sonic and Sega All Star Racing, NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio, Valkyria Chronicles and the Gensis/Mega Drive Collection with some of them going for next to nothing.
I knew some of these but there are some really interesting information here. SEGA trying to find a replacement or equivalent for Sonic explains why they were making so many one-off platformers in SEGA Saturn.

Well, I looked things through. In a PlayStation All-Stars sequel project, it works same as linking to other websites; you can just add a URL link of the post like normally.

With that said, here's another job for us to chew on while the item voting goes on:

Job #14: Submit a collectable that would serve to represent characters other than the playable roster

Since Melee, a staple of the Smash series has been some form of collectable that includes characters from all over the history of Nintendo and the represented third-parties. Melee, Brawl and 4 had trophies, Brawl also had stickers, and Ultimate introduced spirits. And with how storied SEGA is in terms of games, we can't pass up an opportunity to include our own equivalent! So what will it be?

I guess a clearer way of framing it would basically be: what thing is it? What object or just general entity will these characters be represented through? You look at trophies and stickers and spirits, what will our thing be? Does it have any additional features other than just collecting these characters? How will they be shown off in the collectable itself (original artwork? 3D models? etc)?

Worth noting as well that this is our final job before we start tackling some Alex Kidd stuff

Job 14: Capsule Toys

Taken from Shenmue, the capsule toys were one of the many distractions within the game. Ryo would be able to get Capsule Figures of many prominent Sega characters at the time including Sonic, Alex Kidd and Akira Yuki(sadly this was prior to Yakuza, so no Kiryu. Also unfortunately Shenue 3 having less association with Sega had to remove the Sega themed toys outside Shenmue characters).

Like in Shenmue these will be fully 3D models that the player can examine. Each Capsule toy comes with a small 'leaflet' type paper.

The only downside is they may be too similar to trophies...but who doesn't love trophies? Must come with some flavour text too, which will push it more into the 'trophy' expy light, but I personally found trophy collecting more exciting due to those mini bios compared to Ultimate's Spirits.

These will be displayed on a decorated shelf within a fictional bedroom, and can be sorted via 'series', 'date', 'name' and finally 'system debut'.

Job #14: Statues

To put it simply, statues are essentially the trophies in Smash. They are 3D models of the playable characters, assist characters, items, and stages in the game, along with various characters and items from past SEGA games. Taking a page out of Sonic Generations' book, these statues can be viewed from a dedicated Statue Room-like side museum mode where the player can read through their biographies, arrange them and walk through SEGA's history with any fighter they want. There can even be a stage where the game randomly shows off these statues similar to Race of AGES!

I was considering nominating Stickers from All-Star Racing (which we can also add later, like how Brawl had both models and artwork), but I figured it's been a while since a lot of SEGA characters made an HD appearance so this might be a good opportunity to give fans some higher quality models. Not very creative, but they'll do the job with enough fanservice.

These statues can also have some roles in their own side modes (we definitely should consider a Chao Garden that rewards you with Chao statues) but I don't think they need to have any gameplay effect beyond that. We are already juggling All-Star moves and Assist characters in regular matches, any more may be a bit confusing.
