Reminded me more of the Kid Icarus menu, which I'm fine with. I have no issues with it.

Although a darker menu might be better, I'm fine with it. No issues with it at all. It's just a menu, really.

I'm really sick of Sakurai game menus, but at least it's a good style. We could be stuck with something much worse. Still, I do agree that a nice, dark menu would be nice to see. To me, it's less about the colors and more about the overall artistic style and feng shui. I liked Melee's menus most for having that orderly column layout while still being very colorful.

Sure it looks terrible on the computer screen, but I think once we see it on the 3DS we'll like the fact that it's sparsely populated with big, distinctly shaped buttons. It's not designed for a TV screen, it's designed for the 3DS, and that has certain limitations, such as size and screen real estate, that can't be overlooked.

I like the simple and familiar Sakurai menus, but I do wish they'd spice it up a bit. If anything this is a solid argument as to why every sequel should be different.

What it does right: Simple interface that is familiar and easy to understand. The more important features have the biggest, most noticeable buttons. The blue for "Games and More" makes sense because it's a lesser-used mode and so the button needs a cooler color to "stay out of the way" of the main attractions: Smash Run, Smash, and Online. The minimalist design works well for smaller screens and will continue to be readable even in poor lighting conditions (such as glare on the screen) which can happen while using the 3DS while travelling. The distinct shape of each button also helps with this.

Possible changes they could've gone with: Picking a background that is a cool color that isn't white. (I say cool colors because hot colors tend to be bad for backgrounds, but blue/green/purple/black/white are okay. Look at Melee's menu, which has a lot of black/blue/purple in the background, as an example. Warm colors are better for foreground stuff like menu items.) I don't strictly like the fact that the Smash Run button is green, because it's not a warm color and also it's somewhat offensive to my eyes (admittedly that is subjective). The Orange for Online is a little offensive to my eyes too, if I'm gonna be super picky. It just looks wrong to place that right next to two "red" colors like actual Red and Pink since orange itself also contains a bit of red. Challenges did not need a hot color like pink, but I'm not sure where else you'd put "pink" if you wanted it in the game's menu. Maybe swapping the colors of Smash Run and Online would've been better, but they could've used some variation of yellow instead of green. (admittedly, yellow is hard color to work with, especially on a white background, which is another reason to not use a white background).

Now, I can nitpick all of this, but I also feel it's necessary to say that art is rarely, if ever, "perfect". It's not like engineering where there is one solid answer that is better than any others. A lot of it is very subjective. Even if the changes I listed were implemented, there would still be things that I or anyone else could criticize it on.

However, I will say this: A lot of you who play Smash a lot will spend more time looking at this menu over the years than you currently seem to realize.

I actually think it looks fine there, so I don't know if you're trying to prove my point or not.
Not trying to really prove anything with that, But your message made me wanna do that and it's actually making me shiver because i feel like i'm playing the game.

We're not really obligated to swing on of Sakurai's testicles with you.
Hang on. Where in my post did I say "I like this layout?" WHERE!? Seriously, you people need to get off your high horse with this assumption mindset because that just makes you look even more silly. Fine. Ok, let me reworded my post so people like you can understand what I'm saying:

"I do not like this menu layout very much since it recycles previous games that Sakurai worked upon. I wish it could be a little different and something unique for once. However, whenever I play a game of Smash Bros from any generation, I don't spend my time looking at the menu screen for several hours. Not to mention a lot of other people don't do that either unless they're away from the game for a bit or occupied with something else in real life."

There. Simple enough for you? I hope so. It can't get any more simple than that.

I hope the Wii U version has a dark epic menu. But based on For Fun/Glory icon, we will be getting something like the 3DS version.

Hmm I would've liked a new menu style all-together but it really is whatever.

I've never played Kirby's Air Ride or KI:U so I don't have any opinions on whether or not the menu is recycled or lacking anything unique. It looks nice, simple and colourful to me. I like it. :)

I would happier if the 3DS menu was white and the Wii U menu was dark, but I'm not confident we'll get that.

I hated 64's menu... The lack of sound turned me off.

That said I love Melee's. Nice and easy to navigate, easy to look at, and easy to appreciate.

I honestly don't like the menu at all either. It looks too cute and basic, as if it was an art project turned in from a grade school kid (not trying to be harsh). I wish they would create a menu similar to the one they had in Melee. Just something with a direct layout and a more serious tone. The Melee menu, along with the menu music, really created a great atmosphere for the game.

I loved the Melee menu, actually. I especially loved the way the stage select screen and character select screen were laid out. It was far better than some formulaic "make it as square as possible" crap. Easy to read, easy to navigate, and the breaks every two lines on the stage select screen made it easy for your eyes to find exactly the stage you wanted. Overall it was pretty great.

Yeah they did the square thing in Brawl's CSS, but I can forgive it because they only used it once and not all over the place.

The announcer was great in Melee, so much nostalgic fun. Never get tired of the sounds from melee. Just good stuff all around.

it's on your small 3DS screen. small, bright, distinct buttons make more sense.

would've been better on the touch screen, though.

Doesn't look bad to me.

Even if it did . . . it's just a menu. o.o

People complaining about the menu layout/colors.... how often can you say you honestly stare at it long enough to notice it? Seems like just going out of the way to nitpick the game now.

Criticisms of the design are fair.

I think smash 3ds is glorious right now but if the menu was atrocious then I would say it was.

I don't think it looks bad though. It feels like it captures the essence of smash since it's vibrant and flashy to an extent.

Not jarring to look at either.

Only gripe is that it's too similar to his other games.

The reference is nice sure, buttttt new things can be cool too.

If I can use the buttons to get where I need to go without hassle, it's a good enough menu for me.

You don't have to like something to come to its defense. So... you would still be swinging off his balls.

Also, some advice: Trying hard doesn't seem to be working out for you. I suggest relaxing a bit.

The menu is just text on a white background with a semi-random assortment of shapes with thick outlines. Garbage.

If you look at the japanese menu (the original one) you can see that it looks A LOT better than the english one.

It looks the same. Just that English text looks boring compared to Japanese text.
It looks pretty meh to me and I'm sure the Wii U version is going to look the same. I would've preferred that the blue in the background at least stood out a little bit more. Too much white in the background.

Meh. I'll be seeing the winning screen much more than this screen. So this matters not to me.

Says the guy who spewing out homosexual jokes. I'm not swinging off his balls. I just don't think this complaint is really all that reasonable when there are bigger things to worry about. Besides, you're the one started the whole "I'm his bottom balls' boy" assumption that trying to sound hip or whatever, so you really need to watch your tongue.

Now you're just straight making things up. That's not a homosexual joke. If you're a guy, that's coincidental - it's a metaphor for how you cling to something.

The menu is pretty ugly. It's a pretty safe area of criticism because it's the equivalent front page of the game. There will always be bigger things to complain about, but that doesn't invalidate the criticism of everything that isn't big. There are plenty of other threads for that. This isn't the "We complain only about big stuff!" subforum. You're free to make your own forum somewhere else for that, though. Maybe start a group?

I don't know, I like this kind of menu. Liked it on Brawl and liked it on Kid Icarus Uprising. I'm happy with it!

I haven't played KI:U, but I have played Kirby Air Ride. I do agree with you that it's not lacking anything unique - it's clean, simple, and gets the job done. I feel like Brawl and Air Ride had some of the cleanest menus in terms of how space was used, colors, etc. but I rather enjoy the 3DS version. It's a bit tightly squished, but being the fact that they're using a 3DS screen for everything, they don't have much of an option without making the icons extremely small. I do, however, feel that they could have done it more similarly to Brawl and made it so the menu icons actually fit into eachother, rather than being an assortment of shapes. It does this to an extent on the 3DS version, but the way it's set up with icons such as Challenge and Online are a bit odd.

I spend more time on the character select screen out of all the menus, and I personally think that the CSS is beautiful, so even if the menu was complete crap, I wouldn't care.

Also, I really hope Sakurai's wife doesn't ever see this thread. It would be so sad. :(

Just like how you're making up this whole "I'm on Sakurai's junk" claim. Maybe a metaphor, but a very childish one while you're at it.

And I'm not going to do all that since I'm not into making threads nor groups. I just like to discuss on said threads. You on the other hand being disruptive to this thread (and many like it) with your trollish attitude and rude, childish remarks. I don't care you love/hate it. That's on you. The point of the matter was the OP expressed an opinion and I just felt like commenting to it. And initially, I didn't even want to invalidate his opinion since I was partially agreeing with him (in fact, I still don't think I really did). But then "you" happened...

Hmm, it looks like you're the one derailing the thread by belittling its significance. On the other hand, I've made some kind of relevant commentary about the/a menu in all of my posts here. Here you've made an entire post that's about what besides me? I think it's kind of fortunate that "me" happened. :]

The use of the bottom screen is neat but the difference between it and the top screen is abrasive. The top should have been just as wholesome and interactive...

No surprise about the menu and I didn't expect anything different.

Whoever says it's not unique has no idea what they're looking at.

I love the menus btw. It shows you its only function: to access the next menu. It's not strictly vertical or horizontal. It's seamless.

You can press up and pull a pac-man by pressing left to get to the bottom-right side in a jiffy. Criss-cross action. Efficient and convenient. It's eye-candy because it's not just text, but you can glance at an icon and you already know where you want to go. I wouldn't change it at all.
