Volume 4 of Iwata Asks came out this morning, and contains what is quite possibly the greatest news I have heard in a very long time:

Sakurai
Right. With older games, players were thrown into the game without any particular objective. With games nowadays though, you just can’t do that, leading me to the conclusion that we couldn’t have a game without a storyline. With Smash Bros., however, there are way too many characters and the game is made without a main character. Therefore, I had a really hard time figuring out how we might establish a storyline.

Iwata
I see.

Sakurai
At that point, I decided to ask Kazushige Nojima-san to help us since he had composed the scenarios for titles like Final Fantasy VII.

Iwata
Wow, asking the person who crafted scenarios for Final Fantasy to write one for Smash Bros. is a pretty big deal.
Saying it's a pretty big deal is an understatement. Seriously. :chuckle:

XD Gotta love how they laugh at the Musician Guy. It's like:

S: EVEN HE GOT THROUGH THE GAME ON EASY MODE!
I: HIM? EASY MODE?! THEN THIS GAME MUST TRULY BE FOR BEGGINERS!
S: YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT.

XD Also, how many times have they said the word "Right" in this interview, huh?

Nintendo likes to toture the Music guy :(

just because he's not very good at games doesn't mean he's prone to teasing.

through it is ironic he has a hard time playing games he makes music for.

Interesting. If they have the writer for a major critically-acclaimed game like Final Fantasy VII working on Subspace Emissary, there might be hope that it won't be entirely corny after all. Not that it matters ultimately, since even an entirely corny story would be sufficient for the basic goal of SSE, but it opens the possibility of the mode being even better than expected.

I just hope all that focus they gave making the game accessible to beginners doesn't mean they neglected to add more challenges for better players, like tougher vs mode CPUS and making the new "intense" difficulty more than just a re-named "very hard" mode from Melee.

The guy also contributed to the scenario of both Kingdom Hearts console games, if that means anything.

Does anyone know if these follow a schedule?

It appeared that they were coming up approximately 1 per day. Is it possible that none will be released over the weekend?

I'm very curious about this.

Man I love these so much. They really make my night. I'm going to go back and read the Mario Galaxy ones after this.

For how much talent and time is going into Brawl... I hope it plays well competitively. It'd be a waste if it didn't.

Nintendo employees don't work on weekends so we probably shouldn't expect another one of these tomorrow.

And I am also very interested in "intense" mode. He basically said it is not for standard play... at least it should have a good story.

I think the rumor of SSE lasting 10 hours might be true. It took him several days to finish SSE.

This whole interview is fascinating to read. Sakurai is perfect for making these Smash Bros. games. He has a clear vision and executes it to a "T". As some looking to enter the entertainment business, I love hearing about how a movie/novel/video-game is brought into existence. The fact that the Final Smash idea had been conceived during the development of the original Smash Bros., and that the recordings from that game are being used now, give Brawl a sense of purpose and finality that really wasn't there before. I trust Sakurai is going to give us one hell of game.

I'm somewhat upset that they're using 9 year old voice samples for Final Smashes, if I read right? I personally havent HEARD any vocalizations during final smashes save for Ike and Dedede.

For once they better get Luigi's voice right. There really wasn't an excuse for Melee.

I think it's awesome that they're using 9 year old samples.

It just be even awesomer if they had some video evidence that final smashes were planned for SSB, or if by hacking the SSB rom you could find traces of it. Don't know why, but i always find that stuff cool.
