Though we still don’t know who will fill up the remaining 3rd party character slots for Brawl, it’s always fun to speculate. What character would be a better fit into the Smash Bros. universe than Joe. View-ti-ful-Joe.

Born on a Nintendo console (GCN) Joe made quite an impression on the gaming world. He had style, grace, and plenty of unlockables along with a difficult and satisfying single player gaming experience. IGN even gave Viewtiful Joe game of the year.

From his initial success Capcom released three more games under the Viewtiful monicker. Viewtiful Joe 2 was more of the same. The Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble (the fighter) received terrible reviews and was quickly forgotten. Viewtiful Joe:Double Trouble for the Nintendo DS was well made, and quite fun for its translated size.

What makes Joe such a good choice? He’s a fighter from an action game. This means all of his fighting moves can be taken directly from his games. Punches, kicks, and specials moves are just waiting to be used. Sakurai wouldn’t have to do much work inventing moves for Joe.

Viewtiful Joe is the best non-Sonic third party option. Way better than any Final Fantasy character, way better than Snake even from a design standpoint. In fact, I’d rather see Viewtiful Joe than Megaman.

Well put.

Joe would be a pretty good choice, but out of all the popular choices to put on a well trafficked blog, why did you…? Well, they picked you to write it, not me. ;)

I asked Kirbykid to blog about potential characters, but to choose characters that are interesting (and logical) rather than popular. My example was Midna, but Viewtiful Joe nails it. A nintendo-ish character that already has a moveset written? Juicy.

Yeah, we can blog about Crono, or Ryu, or Geno, or Shadow Pikachu, or Kefka, or other third party characters. But their chances are incredibly low, and that would be a blatant grab for your attention. :p

Ah, I thought as much. Though Sonic/whoever and the like are more likely, they’re also a bit obvious. I think it’d be really fun, though, to see a big composite post with each of yer posters listing a similar idea. Like a group editorial, each person picking their favorite idea.

On a completely and utterly unrelated note (really, completely so, I swear,) you guys happen to be lookin’ fer a casual-player to join the ranks?

Metroid Man wants metroid characters. Even I didn’t see that coming.

The hunters have only been in one game and they’re still so new. Maybe if Metroid: Corruption has a multi-player mode, and maybe if this mode features the Hunters, then maybe we’ll see some hunters in brawl.

Maybe we’ll see the Hunters as an alternate costume to Samus?

^ that is why they didn’t Prinny. All the third party characters Scav listed were favorites, but most likely won’t happen. I think they wanted to go for a more practical approach to other 3rd party characters that have a greater chance of showing up, obvious or otherwise. It’s definitely an interesting concept, and personally I completely forgot about Viewtiful Joe.

Eh, I’m not really fond of Viewtiful Joe, but I can definitely see your point. He basically fits. I think it’s really up to Sakurai as to whether he thinks the character is interesting enough. I doubt he’s popular enough.

So what about big name Nintendo characters that don’t necessarily have a free pass into Brawl, such as Cel Link, Chibi-Robo, or Olimar/Pikmin? You can’t say they are obvious shew-ins, overwhelming favorites, OR entirely unlikely. Just a big fat mystery. I would love to hear some of Kirbykid’s/Scav’s/Mic’s thoughts on any or all 3 of these characters. (Plus any that you think fit in that category.) Here’s the abbreviated version of mine. (Scav, Midna is an interesting candidate by the way. You might consider writing something up on her yourself. ;) I know I’d read it. Oh, and while I have your attention… how’s Smashcast 4 coming? You guys could make your predictions for Brawl if you release it before E3.)

My thoughts:

If they can include Young Link, the can use an even more diverse addition such as Cel Link. I don’t want a clone. Things like using his grappling hook instead of arrows would be interesting. (Not grabbing, just smacking and maybe getting a couple of percents back out of opponents like in Zelda: WW.) The graphical style would just add so much as well.

Oh and like it or not, Chibi-Robo, not as an A-list slugger, but an up and coming Nintendo franchise none-the-less, has quite a decent chance at making it into the game. (chibi-copter for up B anyone? All his crazy costumes for different… costumes? He’s got potential, and just seeing a tiny silver character would be sweet, though obviously he’d be upscaled a bit, like Pikachu was.)

Plus these two guys have DS games coming out shortly.

Olimar/Pikmin (probably the most wanted of the 3 I mentioned) seems to be yet another perfect way to spruce up a slightly aging game. As I think we all can imagine, it would be great if Olimar just waddled around, while the 3 or 4 pikmin did all the fighting. Forward smash, and one of the pikmin at your side throws itself out feet first. Climb a chain of pikmin to return to the level. Whatever, the potential is there.)

I think that if Megaman were still as big as he was back in the day, we’d see a current version of him, but I think the safest way the could include him would be to have just the original Megaman, but with a nice updated 3D model. (Personally, I like X the best, but the original deserves it/fits better.)

(Thanks for reading.)

Thinking more about it, I’m not really sure about Joe. This is a character that was defined mostly by his ability to speed up and slow down time, and I don’t think that would work well in Brawl. It’d certainly bog down the game in multiplayer.

I always forget about Chibi Robo… a potentially interesting character from what I know about the little guy. I ought to play one of those games some day.

Fpth:
Let’s be clear. Though Joes powers effected time a little, the main focus was usually on how they effected Joe. With Mach Speed His movements became faster
When he slowed things down, his moves became more powerful adopting different effects and abilities.
Zoom-in does the same thing. He gets fire attacks, and other crazy abilities.

From a design standpoint this is a bit of a challenge but not nearly impossible.
What if Joes B moves were “zoom in” “slow” and ” mach speed”.

If he uses speed: He can move fast like fox for a limited time. And little joes fly off of him to do damage. Also his strength is lessened.
Slow: his attacks and moves become slower, but more powerful. His damage and knock back increased at a sacrifice to speed.
Zoom: Changes his moves to his fire attacks that have more range but more lag at the end of his attacks. Red hot kick ect.

If he used any of these too much, he would turn into regular Joe and be super vulnerable. No defense. No offense. No double jump. And what’s worse…. No cool catch phrases.

Maybe he should just forego all of his time altering powers and just pummel his foes with his cool catch phrases. The other characters wouldn’t even dare to mess with something so ridiculously cool.

What about B.O.B.

He’s no more obscure than the Fire Emblem characters or Kid Icarus…Not that i really see it happening. I’m sure they’ve released the bulk of the new characters, and they’ve all been relatively logical–perhaps with the exception of Snake.

i think chibi would be more of an item sorta thing, but joe as a brawler is an excelent idea

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. It would work quite well.

In fact, it’s probably saying something that my biggest concern is matching up the art style.

ok guys back to our first subject yes it would be cool for viewtiful joe to be in ssbb but keep in mind he would’nt have a special and he’s not in 3-D so he doesn’t catch up to the other characters so for me it’s a maybe

Um, not really. Like I say about a dozen posts up, there’s no problem other than his art style. Joe is SSBB material

E

it’s just he fits and everything but the only problem is well all the characters are like 3-D but he’s 2-D and they can’t edit him into one cause then he wouldn’t look like himself now do you understand

T

Actually, Joe is 3-D. The animation style just makes him look kinda 2-D, especially in stills.

i guess that beats my arguement but still he’s not real life looking

What about Game&Watch…he was 2D too but he was still in Melee.

Joe is a great cannidate fo Brawl, and even though his art style is different, he could still make it. For example, Think about the game, Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles. Every Naruto game before that was cell shaded. Uzumaki Chronicles was not, but Naruto’s look never changed.

What I’m trying to say is that Viewtiful Joe can be made completly 3-D and still look awsome
