I would much rather lose because someone worked to defeat me, not because they managed to score an item before I did.

I don't mind some items as long as crates don't explode. Still in Melee a couple of items would have to be banned and the same would probably go for Brawl. I don't care though. I have seen item tournaments and they really don't make the outcomes change too much... I've never seen anyone win because of getting a certain item by luck at the end (minus exploding box killing someone).

I hear everyone complaining that where items spawn plays a big difference.

Ok, so a bomb spawned right next to your opponent and you both have 100%, what's your next move? You obviously dodge it. People here make it seem like you are helpless -.-

When i ponder these heavy facets of existence, i tend to think of no-items play as somewhat like Chess, where the game depends completely on the player's skill and strategy, which is fun (If you like chess, anyway) and Items On would be like Poker, where both skill and luck decide the outcome.

So both are alright, it just depends on your preferences. I know Chess and Poker probably weren't the best examples but you get the idea. In competitive Smash there's often cash involved and many would prefer to bet their money on their skills alone than to let too much luck in the equation. Items-On tournaments would attract more Gambler-type players, i think, and that seems to be rare in the smash community.

I play with items on. I don't personally care about them making fights unfair, as I don't play competitively. I just find it more fun using items, although sometimes I do turn them off.

Well even if you dodge it will open up a pretty big hole in your defenses. You will be at a frame disadvantage (bigger disadvantage with certain characters than others).

Depends on what items.

As soon as I came here (Australia) and started playing it with people that played it relatively competitively (but still sucked), none of them played with items on, which is how I used to play.
Of course it affected my play a little bit, but I'm used to it now.

I think items can be cheap, or annoying, so now I prefer not to play with them since... I'm used to it, and they're like... banned in tournaments and everything (even though I don't really go to tournaments).

True, though, it makes it harder.
Gives you more chances to learn when to press L/R and do a 'power shield'. LOL!

No items= Tactical play and technical skill.

Items= Random variables and unstable situations.

It just depends on how you feel. I personally prefer no items because I love the competative Smash Scene. But items are fun, if only temporary in means of entertainment.

Playing with items is still tactical and technical but it adds a touch of randomness.

We don't play with items, but that's because they're annoying and Melee's all suck. We're really considering putting AT's as permanant items if we can turn crates and barrels off.
(By "we" I mean my dorm room. We all play competitively with no items right now in Melee)
