I would much rather lose because someone worked to defeat me, not because they managed to score an item before I did.

That is the point. No one would take the more complicated way if there is a simpler way (and why should anyone?). I want a metagame with more depth.Why try something complicated when you can do it simple?
Well even if you dodge it will open up a pretty big hole in your defenses. You will be at a frame disadvantage (bigger disadvantage with certain characters than others).I hear everyone complaining that where items spawn plays a big difference.
Ok, so a bomb spawned right next to your opponent and you both have 100%, what's your next move? You obviously dodge it. People here make it seem like you are helpless -.-
Playing with items is still tactical and technical but it adds a touch of randomness.No items= Tactical play and technical skill.
Items= Random variables and unstable situations.
It just depends on how you feel. I personally prefer no items because I love the competative Smash Scene. But items are fun, if only temporary in means of entertainment.
