Never too young, really. The important part is being able to improve and grasp concepts. If you can do those 2 things, you can do... Well, anything, really.

Thirteen years of age is definitely younger than average, though I don't think I would say it's too young. With that said, at the age of 13 you are still a dependent, meaning you probably aren't able to travel around on your own just yet. Don't expect to go out of state for tournaments for a while.

13 is definitely not the typical age, but that doesn't limit you to anything but far away tournaments.
The more time you have to practice at a young age, the better.

Here's a word of advice: listen, don't talk. Look at the stickies, find the one most appropriate for what you're talking about, and go there. Ask simple questions, understand the answers. There is a wealth of information here, and a lot of people willing to help you find it.

13 is not too young to play competitively. Look at Noah - that kid made it out of pools at Evo, and he was 8. However, people tend to be suspicious of younger players, so it's up to you to leave a good impression. You're surrounded by your elders, so mind yourself. Take it from a guy who spent most of his teenage years doing exactly this - it can be very easy to piss people off. On the other hand, it's easy to make lasting friendships with really cool people if they don't perceive you as annoying.

I started Competitive Pokemon at around that age, and while I was really bad at it at the time, the head start really payed off in the long run.

If you're really passionate about playing this game competitively, go for it. There's nothing to stop you.

absolutely not, kids learn faster than older people anyway

just remember to do what BPC says, ergo listen and drink in information, never stop trying to find ways to improve both your gameplay and your understanding of the game, never hesitate to ask questions

I always ask questions if I'm not sure about something, unfortunately it took me a while to learn that thats what you're supposed to do, I'm 25

Maturity and learning ability matter more than age. If you're quick enough on the uptake to improve, and mature enough to accept wins and losses gracefully and learn from them, you'll be fine. But as mentioned numerous times, your ability to compete is in the hands of whoever you can get to drive, but that shouldn't stop you from becoming a strong player in local competitions.

And I can't stress what BPC said enough. A lot of older players think young players are annoying, and honestly, it's not an unfair bias to have. But if you act mature and show actual care for playing the game and improving, you'll work past their bias and no one who knows you will care.

The younger the better, in my opinion. When you get older, you start getting responsibilities that cut away your time from playing more and more.

And honestly, age doesn't matter. Experience does. I went to a monthly in Kitchener, Ontario to play Melee and had an 11-year old in my pool who went by Smallfry. He played Marth. Although I ended up beating him, he had excellent fundamentals and reacted to specific situations that surprised me: wave-dash back -> F-smash to punish, D-throw to F-smash, etc, he was doing things like those.

I don't think you can ever be too young as long as you're willing to devote into learning the game.

It shouldn't matter. It all depends on your love for smash and wanting to be the best you can be

I would say age is a factor but only to an extent. It honestly depends on your ability to learn and how you learn.

Nobody remembers @Wizzrobe here? He alone should inspire you. 13 is not too young perse. Just get to know the game's mechanics and your character well, watch videos, practice, it should come as easily to you as anyone else I'd say. That be the beauty of gaming.

If you're good at the game, then age shouldn't matter. Of course you'll get much better over time though. I entered my first tournament at 14 and made it all the way to the semi-finals and only lost because of an accidental Self Destruct. I'm not entirely sure how many entrants there were, but it lasted around 4-5 hours, so I guess it was big enough for me to assume I was decent at the game.

You'd be surprised. A lot of locals actually tend to have at least one person on the younger side. Not necessarily as young as 13 but teens in general.

I'm 13 and I competitive play Smash at online tourneys with people on twitch or something. I can't really go to tournaments like APEX because of school and stuff, but don't let that stop u from trying.

Doesn't really matter the age imo so long as the person is mature enough to take a loss, and take the sorts of trash talk you sometimes hear.

I started playing competitive smash at 14 and although the road was bumpy at points, I was glad I started young because I had a long road of improvement that I've been able to look back on since then and use as incentive to keep on going. Also you surprise people. As someone who was once at that stage, I can tell you there's very few things more satisfying than freaking out a 20+ year old smasher because you 2-stocked them.

13 isn't too young, I'm 14 and have been going to local tourneys and no one has really cared about my age, I've met some good people who around 16-20 at tourneys. The more you can practice at a young age, the better. The only thing that I'd be worried about is your maturity level. I don't know how mature you are, but you'll have to learn to accept wins or losses and learn to improve from those wins and losses.

If you need a training partner, go ahead and send me a PM. I need a training partner myself :D

There's a twelve year old in my area that has won 5 forty man (bi) weeklies in a row and just won our quarter monthly tounrament this past weekend, beating this three older brothers and pocketing $140+ in prize money.

No, thirteen is not too young. Just pay attention, listen, practice and play.

Why would 13 be too young? Can't find a valid reason why? That's because there is none. Keep moving forward, little guy.

Several years ago the Kentucky brawl scene had one, if not more, top ten ranked player(s) that were that age or really close. I know that one in particular still competes at regional and national level competitions today.
Also, we have a few guys and gals in that age group that show up to some weekly tournaments in my area and do very well for themselves. I would never dream of anyone telling them they are too young. We do nothing but encourage them every week. I expect them to be powerhouses within a few years for our regions if they keep it up.

Also, if you are looking for tech knowledge for any character, just check out the guide section homie. There are lots of great things there.

Happy Smashing.

I actually first tried to become competitve in brawl when I was 10. I'm 13 now myself and I'm way better(but still not very good...) Friend me and that would be cool, and I'd accept

That kid was still a feetus when he started laying waste to M2K on PM. ;3

Seriously, what a little bada** though. I still go back and check out that video all the time. He's a good testament to the fact that age isn't much of an issue, giving seasoned veterans a run for their money on multiple smash games.

all you're saying right now is that midwest is so bad they get bodied by sixth graders
That's pretty harsh. I was actually just offering some encouragement. But there are enough national level accounts that it doesn't matter where they are from, if they out perform someone, they out perform them.

13 isn't too young, but there is a requirement that you learn how to use all forms of the word "to" (to, too, two) ;)

Just focus on your schoolwork and remember to keep things in perspective, there are other great things in life other than Smash =D Have fun and be fair and kind to other people, don't judge, always be able to learn from players better and worse than you and remember, Losing is an important and necessary part of the learning process. Do a lot of it if you want to get better.

It doesn't really matter what age you are in when playing Smash it just matters that you are able to learn and adapt a good example would be Wizzrobe he started joining tournaments when he was 2 years old and is still keeping at it today at age 16. So in conclusion there really is no defined age to start smash (Nor there should be) and it is completely fine to start playing smash competitively.

There was once a 13-year-old kid who placed 25th at Apex 2010 and 17th at MLG DC 2010. He went on to win the first SKTAR two years later. I think his name was Nairoby or something like that.

If that's the same Nairo, he is a top ten player nationally currently, and continues to rank super well in every major tournament.
