I haven't played smash more than an average of once per few months this year.
That doesn't mean anything.
Sorry, let me iterate.

Play once in a spam of 3 months and not be involved with anything Smash related other than E3 and other public displays.

That makes more sense, I think.

I'm not a particularly competitive person (I've never been in a legitimate tournament) but I do desire to be competitive eventually and I am constantly on this site.

Though, not even my friends (who are extremely casual) like tripping, so I think this guy is just demented, personally.

I prefer games that give me the opportunity to safely practice dealing with a flawed, unfair world and an even more flawed, fallible person (myself) than games that work to provide a perfect fantasy where I have total control and predictability.

Honestly, even though most of my time in Smash playing FFA with items on in Brawl, I never really saw any appeal in tripping at all. I can't really remember any time that a trip lead to anything but a free hit or a minor annoyance. I can only begin to understand how much it must have pissed off anybody who liked to play 1v1, this article reeks of link baiting.

Looks like we found the one thing the whole community can hate.

I think I've played Brawl so much that tripping has just become part of it. But I would never want it back.

In my experience most of the time tripping wasn't completely random. It happened during key moments.
I can't count all the times I tripped when attempting a KO smash attack, or tripped right into a fighters blow.

I'll admit I hated it when I first started playing. Every fall I took made me want to throw my Wiimote through the tv.
But then I just accepted it. It was part of the game, there was nothing I could do except deal with it and anticipate it.

So whenever it happened randomly I'd just get back up and continue on my way.
If it happened when I was going for a KO potential hit, I shrugged it off and thought to myself "back to the drawing board for a new combo".
And even when I tripped into a Giant Punch or smash attack I learned to suck it up and realize that I am being tested.

The Smash Bros. gods are alive in well in every game. They do things to test you, and tripping is the biggest. It's either you are doing too well and they want to even things up, or just knock you down a peg because they feel like it. All you can do is react, and move on.

It doesn't happen very frequently, but when it does you sure notice it. But if you cry and complain and call it cheap, you are a crybaby that's afraid of how the world actual is. You think life cares if you trip and fall in some mud? **** no. Life was the one that put that pot hole there. Suck it up and try again.

...I actually liked the article... (hangs head in shame)

Just saying the guy made some good points, though I wouldn't wish 1/5 chance tripping on my worst enemy...

YOU GUYS! TRIPPING IS THE BESTEST MECHANIC IN THE SUPER SMASH BROTHERS VIDYA GAEMS!

:troll:
But seriously. Whoever thinks bringing back random tripping is a good idea is...well, for the lack of a better term, Has taken a few to the head.

How dare someone like a mechanic that the small vocal part of the Smash Bros fandom seem to hate!! :p

Disclaimer: I am glad tripping is gone.

"I wondered how much more interesting it would be to watch some aggressive play in Brawl"
It's almost as if this guy has never seen competitive Brawl. (This is not a swipe at competitive Brawl. There's nothing inherently wrong with more defensive games.)

I'll tell you what I won't miss: The Smash Bros.-ignorant people who decide not to come to events anymore because they got their ego bruised.

And that's really all that matters.

The quiet majority probably wouldn't mind seeing tripping gone.

"Stopping mid-fight to fall on your butt is WAY better than being able to use normal attacks while sliding! Brawl is only hated because of those gosh darn MELEE PLAYERS".

And thus, the walls separating the community fell for a short period. Harmony was achieved.

Maybe the author watched too much anime and believes that tripping is cute.

Agreed. Don't bring this here.
Very much disagreed. The only way a community can grow is through appreciating each others differences, not their similarities.

Anyway, it's Destructoid. They're a mainstream game journalism site who don't look at games as a work of art, but as something that they as journalists should just comfort the reader in buying. They help the lowest common denominator make choices in their purchasing habits. They are not obsessed with how mechanics influence gameplay because they simply do not have the time to do so. Everything's gotta go fast and that's why uninformed journalists are present in nearly every news outlet.

The author seems misinformed, but he also seems glad to remain in the dark. The creepy amount of knowledge you guys have about this game, has no use to him. He enjoys a bit of the random elements because it's slightly funny to him. I wouldn't call him out personally, since he's just a writer who casually enjoys games. You need to put yourself in his shoes and realize that not everyone has the time to devote this much to a single game.

The fact this got featured on a major gaming news site, though, is severely dumb. It's also not something we can fix in a single thread; there have been thesis's on the state of journalism, trying to figure our what went wrong. Not just gaming, but even more-so regular news sites have been dreadful for so long, any author can spout their mindfart and be called a journalist. It's what's wrong in the bigger picture.

If you truly want to help out, contact the author of that article with a polite counterargument. Get a discussion going, don't gossip behind his back. No-one is served with that.

His article is for anyone on the whole wide internet to read, just as these forums are. Given that, this is hardly "gossip". In the same vein you could say his article is "gossip" on the Smash community.

Accurate reaction to this flame bait article:

You know what would be acceptable? An on/off option for tripping. THAT would be great to see.

But this is Destructoid we're talking about, am I really that surprised that such idiocy comes from there?

Yeah Destructoid actually somehow manages and achieves to be the worst of the "incendiary" mainstream sites - it's kinda amazing.

Looks like we found another Diddy main. :troll:

Really though, the only upside to random tripping is that it adds a few extra shots to drinking games. There's not a single other good thing about it I can come up with.

I feel as though the article should've included a competitive brawl match, instead of 3 vids on competitive melee. Then the differences would be obvious.
The last vid comparing combos and tech skill from melee and brawl did make the two seem indistinguishable.

He struck a chord with me with his hometown rules of playing honorably in street fighter 2 by not throwing, similar to how everyone in my town wouldn't edgehog because we saw it as a lame way to win, we'd even help eachother back on stage if we were too far to recover. Like if I was trying to Up B, they would toss a fireball so that I could hit it to get another jump.
I kinda miss those days...

Ok, come on guys, I agreed with some of the first posts but some of you seem really concerned by it, and keep coming back.

The guy is probably laughing in front of his computer screen, reading the 50th post about him being wrong. No matter how good that 50th post was, you got caught in the bait.

If somehow we ever play together, I'll do it for you.

You need to put yourself in his shoes and realize that not everyone has the time to devote this much to a single game.
If I were to put myself in his shoes, I probably wouldn't make an article that would come out as "ignorant" or "flawed" because of my lack of knowledge on the subject.

But hey, whatever gets the money flowing in right?
