If every series had the exact same amount of fighters, what would be your limit?

Let's assume Smash went in a direction where every series had to have the exact same amount of fighters--no exceptions. The amount of fighters each series has will be represented with X. If a series cannot produce enough fighters to fill X, assume they are removed from Smash. (So, if X was 100, assume only Pokemon and Fire Emblem are left in the game. If X was 1, you would easily b allowed to have Smaller series like Duck Hunt or Ice Climbers remain) At what point would you say X cannot go any higher without too many series being cut? Which series would you cut due to X? What would be your final value for X, and who would be in it?

For me, I think a good value for X is 4. I'm not going to cover every series to prevent this from going overboard. I know that Ice Climbers, Game and Watch, R.O.B., etc. would be excluded.

I think four per series is a good amount - for this, I'm using Mario as a baseline: Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Peach all seem essential, so I couldn't see/wouldn't want any of them getting the boot. But characters like Jr. and Rosalina, while frequently appearing, don't feel as necessary.
With a four character requirement, that would mean that my boy ROB got the boot (at a stretch you could get Professor Hector or Vector in, but by God, would that be scraping the barrel) and would put a strain on some series I love (4 characters for Pikmin is pushing it) but I otherwise think that 4 is a good number.

I'm not sure if everyone got the gist of the rules. If characters are owned by the same company but in separate games, they can't be grouped together. and would be part of separate groups despite being owned by Squeenix, and // would also be par of separate groups.

That being said, if a character is largely based off of another game, it would be fine to have them part of that same group. // etc. could be grouped with Mario for being super close to him, but you couldn't do the same with or just for making cameos in Mariokart.

Because I wouldn't want to cut any of those four characters - it may have managed in 64, but Mario in Smash without Peach or Bowser would just seem wrong
So other series would have to step up to four I guess - not a massive ask for most of them (stuff like Ice Climbers or Game and Watch would already be ****ed by anything over 1 fighter per series)

Surprisingly though I'm not going to seperate Luigi, Yoshi, Wario or Captain Toad as their own franchises(even if Smash counts them bar Luigi as being so) even though I easily could;

I put Pauline in Donkey Kong's series even though she's appeared in Mario Odyssey without him cementing her as a Mario character...but, eh, she debuted in a Donkey Kong game and only starred in Mario Vs. DK games for the longest time.
Pikmin was easily the hardest selection process as I'm not only unfamiliar but the titular Pikmin are Olimar(and all the captains) method of attack. Louie would probably use bugs, but Bulborb is 100% filler.
Not massively familiar with Metroid, Metal Gear, Mother or Megaman so hopefully my picks weren't too nutso.
I dislike multiple versions of the SAME character hence only one Link, no Zero Suit Samus and Medli over Tetra for Wind Waker who...well it's a spoiler.
Dropped a few third parties due to space. Probably should have had Final Fantasy over one of the others, but ce la vie.
