Super Smash Bros. but all 3rd parties are Nintendo franchises.

Basically, in this scenario Metal Gear, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Bayonetta, Castlevania, SMT/Persona, Dragon Quest, Banjo-Kazooie, Fatal Fury, Minecraft, Tekken and Kingdom Hearts are Nintendo franchises and have been since their inception. Their individual series histories are the same otherwise.

Based on this post I made in the Here’s The Keys thread, this thread imagines a world where Smash remained an exclusively Nintendo crossover, because all of the 3rd party franchises are owned by Nintendo and always have been! How would the history of the gaming industry at large be affected by such a change?

Sega's mascot would still be Alex Kidd, and they might struggle to sell the Genesis without Sonic, so Nintendo maintains their monopoly for a bit longer until Sony shows up.

Pac-Man would be Nintendo’s initial claim to fame, rather than Donkey Kong. Though if Super Mario Bros. is still Super Mario Bros. and not, I dunno, Super Pac-Man, then Mario would probably still be their mascot. Namco's mascot would be Taizo Hori or Galaga, I guess.

Nintendo would reuse Lock-On Technology from the classic SNES game Sonic 3 & Knuckles to fit Final Fantasy VII onto the N64.

Sonic Team would be a subsidiary of Nintendo, but since I didn't say any series not represented in Smash would be owned by Nintendo, then I guess stuff like NiGHTS and Billy Hatcher just wouldn't exist.

Minecraft would be a Wii exclusive, presumably with motion controls. great.

Nintendo would be the premier developer of fighting games, so say goodbye to Street Fighter tournaments.

Marvel vs Capcom probably wouldn't exist. I guess it would be Marvel vs Nintendo instead?

This is a world in which Capcom's premier fighting games are Darkstalkers and Rival Schools.

Who do you think replaced Raiden and Heihachi in PlayStation All-Stars? Assuming they still can't afford Crash and Spyro.

Also, I know you said SMT/Persona would count as the same, I like to imagine there's some weird contract deal between atlus, sega and nintendo here, and the persona subseries is something of a weird rights situation

They could probably get Lara Croft. In this universe, Square's biggest claims to fame are like, Chrono Trigger, The World Ends With You and Super Mario RPG, so I can't imagine they would own her.

Maybe they could get Klonoa?

Speaking of The World Ends With You, would that still be in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance? I feel like it's not even a sure thing DISNEY is in Kingdom Hearts here, considering they were the primary copyright holders of Sora, not Square.

That point on SEGA's lack of Sonic is interesting, because I suppose that means they'd have had to find something else to replace Altered Beast with to sell the Genesis... which begs the question of what they'd actually have gone with. Assuming a late-1991 to mid-1992 point, I guess Kid Chameleon might make sense as a platformer that's more approachable than the beat-em-up genre? (Given it's likely a matter of approachability, I'm guessing this would write off RPGs given their lack of Western popularity at the time. Then again, Wonder Boy III or even Bonanza Bros. aren't lost on me as loose potential picks. Maybe SEGA as a whole become way more notable for their arcade developments and ports than they do their home-console releases, at least in the West? Could be neat for them to loosen up their RPG restrictions given they'd probably not have leaned into the "radical" marketing angle as much.

The idea of Namco's mascot being Taizo Hori would honestly be incredibly interesting for a few reasons, including because it brings to mind the much later question of the Mr. Driller series being a headlining franchise rather than being treated as something relatively minor... and then Driller Team having the opportunity to develop more polished arcade releases like Star Trigon to help extend the Dig Dug world even more, or other early Namco games getting a similar kind of treatment.

Oh, and Final Fantasy VII being three seperate N64 cartridges stacked on top of each other is a hilarious thought.

That thought on Capcom's fighting games is incredibly interesting. I almost have to wonder - does Final Fight have some kind of weird scenario where it's bought by Nintendo prior to the Alpha games? The context of that game's development means it could quite easily have ended up developed in-house at Nintendo... but if it's still with Capcom, it leads to this fascinating potential idea of Maki ending up in Rival Schools' PS1 port over Sakura, and Street Fighter having had guest fighters as far back as Alpha. Or maybe characters from Fatal Fury were included instead... would that mean Terry's design would be more like his look in the SF1 opening?

Raiden and Heihachi's an interesting case, and I'd say this kind of depends on what direction you'd want to take the thread's concept. Assuming we still want the proposed characters to fill similar roles (Konami's character being slightly weird and obviously cross-promotional, but still cool, and Namco's character being the face of a prominent series with plenty of entries across PlayStation platforms), there's a few ways to take it. I'd probably go with Vic Viper (specifically from Zone of the Enders) and Nightmare (from SoulCalibur, with a DLC Siegfried costume.) This does admittedly make a few assumptions - namely, Enders still got its 2012 HD remake to crosspromote and that Soul Edge acts as Namco's headlining fighting game franchise over TEKKEN and thus actually exists - but I think it'd make at least some sense.

...maybe the Persona subseries is handled a little like Tokyo Mirage Sessions? That game was published by Nintendo but developed by Atlus, so I suppose it'd be more on the Nintendo side of things (perhaps having existed since the N64 which is a... weird thought). Come to think of it, that'd probably mean this universe's Mirage Sessions is more of a dedicated Persona X Fire Emblem crossover rather than a unique project inspired by SMT and FE, which could be interesting... a part of me thinks it'd be interesting to see FE characters used as Personas, akin to the Emblem concept that'd eventually come about in Engage.

They could probably get Lara Croft. In this universe, Square's biggest claims to fame are like, Chrono Trigger, The World Ends With You and Super Mario RPG, so I can't imagine they would own her.

Maybe they could get Klonoa?
The effects of Square not having Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest are actually massive when you think about it. Makes you wonder if the company would even still exist, let alone "as we know it". I guess the Mana series could have been a bigger deal?... but then you have to ask whether that'd even have come about if they didn't already have their history with FF. Begs the question as to whether they even own Taito, or whether they got acquired by another company in 2005.

Come to think of it, it wouldn't surprise me for TWEWY to pivot heavily to a mobile-centric series in some way - whether it be match-three games with pin designs, sequels taking a similar form factor to Final Remix, or even something like Tin Pin Slammer becoming its own side-series. It's kind of fascinating to think what direction that series might have taken.

This makes me kind of wonder what Ehrgeiz would have looked like, to be honest, depending on if SaGa or Chrono Trigger became their bigger series. Assuming the latter (given this is before Chrono Cross), I'm going to guess its guest fighters would have been Crono, Lucca, and Magus, then the additional PlayStation exclusives would probably be Frog, Ayla, and... Crono's future self, maybe?
Speaking of The World Ends With You, would that still be in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance? I feel like it's not even a sure thing DISNEY is in Kingdom Hearts here, considering they were the primary copyright holders of Sora, not Square.
I guess things have to have turned out pretty differently in that elevator pitch, huh. Assuming it goes something like Nintendo being in the same building as Disney in Japan, with Hashimoto (a Nintendo employee) coming across a Disney exec there, then I reckon it'd probably look more like one of Nintendo's flagship series crossing over with Disney properties... which then makes me wonder if they'd have it as Mario rather than Final Fantasy for reasons of popularity and visual cohesion. (King Mario... with Luigi and Peach/Toad as side characters. What a world.)

In that case, I guess it'd be a secondary Nintendo series that still has Nomura connections, which just opens the door to what kind of projects Nomura would have been working on had he been a Nintendo employee. A small part of me reckons it'd probably manifest as some kind of "urban fantasy Zelda" project, so it'd probably be "urban Zelda" characters in Dream Drop Distance rather than TWEWY.

Then again, if TWEWY was kept, it'd open the door for Kingdom Hearts to maybe be planned as more of a "greater crossover" series rather than just one between Nintendo and Disney? I guess it's pure speculation, but a part of me almost wonders if they'd end up taking it as far as something like Super Robot Wars by deliberately trying to pull in as many different Japanese companies as possible into the fold.

So

The Sega Superstars series

How does that work

Do they just not have sonic

Or are they now Nintendo crossovers starring sonic? The fact the series in our timeline slowly evolved from "sega crossovers" to "sonic crossovers with sega" to "purely sonic racing games" it makes me wonder
I guess this depends on the minutae of exactly how Sonic being Nintendo-developed affects SEGA's structure as a whole (for instance, would Sonic Team all be Nintendo employees?) Then again, I reckon there's another plausible answer to this; being that the context of Superstars' original release (a party game / technical showcase for the Eyetoy) would remain the same, but the franchises represented would be different. I guess then there's the question of what that'd look like, though - Sonic Team games like Space Channel 5, NiGHTS and ChuChu Rocket! probably wouldn't exist, and Puyo Puyo's "modern" games following Fever would likewise be up in the air. (Maybe it'd be more focused on SEGA's arcade franchises, with the NiGHTS game being replaced with After Burner for instance?)

This then brings up the question of if Superstars Tennis would even exist, depending on if the first game was more character-focused or not, but I'd assume it'd be around. Then I reckon the Superstars series going forward probably wouldn't have a central focus, given I don't really think SEGA would have some singular brand around which to centre a ton of their image - there's a likelihood that maybe they'd have had less "radical" marketing in the 90s leading to their RPG series being more heavily promoted in the West, but even then, I don't think SEGA would be likely to be "known for" Phantasy Star or Sakura Wars like that.

...I think there might be space for Sonic to be a Wii/DS-exclusive guest character in SASASR though. Mario was apparently planned in a similar role for the real world's release, though it'd be worth noting that in the canon of this universe, there'd most likely be very minimal overlap between Sonic and SEGA to warrant something like this... so maybe not.

This whole thing kind of brings up so many questions about the situations that lead to these franchises being developed at Nintendo to begin with, honestly. It's interesting to find oneself asking whether SNK would have gone ahead with KOF or whether that'd be a Nintendo franchise too... in which case, I wonder if Smash would even happen? Heh... interesting stuff.

In my personal interpretation of things, and for the sake of having a semi-recognizable world to speculate about, I'd still want to have all these "butterfly effect" franchises like the sonic team games to still exist imo, it's just that they came to be under different circumstances

...I wonder what the Alex Kidd series would even look like in this world? Assuming it went on to become something of SEGA's continued "mascot" franchise, rather than being superceded by something like Kid Chameleon or the like.

A thought that comes to my mind is that, perhaps with Sonic not being lined up for release, SEGA would look at the poor critical response to Enchanted Castle compared to the more popular response to Shinobi World and effectively transform the Alex Kidd series as we know it into something more akin to a "crossover-parody" series, a little like Konami's Parodius or Kid Dracula (which was apparently what Shinobi World was originally planned to be.) Of course, that'd most likely come with the series' own games being left by the wayside... but I imagine its world and characters would go on to become a sort of ensemble, centring around the quartet of Alex, Stella, Igul, and Lora, though featuring other reoccurring characters like Janken, Jangorilla, or "Teddy" (a reworked Teddy Boy Blues reference.)

The actual direction you'd take this in could differ from game to game - I'd like to think you could easily have the "plot" of some games be taken decently seriously, while others might just be something like a stage play. (Think of it being a little like how the Kunio-kun series handles its characters and games.) That said, each game would usually have its crossover characters in costumes and slight redesigns to fit each one; think like how Alex has a ninja costume for Shinobi World.

Some ideas for games that come to mind?
  • Alex Kidd in the Fantasy Zone (Arcade, 1991) - A three-way crossover between Alex Kidd, Fantasy Zone, and Space Harrier - specifically being a galaxy-crossing adventure in which Alex (piloting his Peticopter), Opa-Opa and the Harrier join forces to battle a new, dark force seeking to steal all of the stars from the night sky. Unique in its inclusion of distinct side-scrolling and rail-shooting modes, a "slot-machine" Janken mechanic that works in place of Fantasy Zone's shop system, as well as supporting up to three players at a time, it becomes something of a cult classic - and is successful enough to result in a sequel down the road.

  • Alex Kidd and the Golden Axe (Arcade, 1992) - A beat-em-up in which Alex, Stella, and Igul take on the roles of Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead in a stage play that retells the events of the first game. While it works mechanically similarly to the original series, it's switched up with magic being centred around the Janken mechanic, featuring three types (fire, rock, and electricity) with an effectiveness triangle against enemies. Notably, the home console port introduces a secret fourth fighter in the form of Jangorilla, who has forced himself into the game's plot while playing the character of the Centurion from Altered Beast.

  • Alex Kidd and the Fantasy Force (Mega CD, 1993) - A sequel to Alex Kidd in the Fantasy Zone, specifically being released for the SEGA CD. As a new and unknown force of darkness appears to entirely envelop Aries into a wormhole, an unlikely group of SEGA heroes - led by the trio of Opa-Opa, Harrier, and Alex, but also featuring a small handful of "assist" characters - is assembled to recover it, known as the Fantasy Force. This game would be notable for its use of fully-animated cutscenes between rounds, and its direct role in inspiring Namco's creation of the USGF shared-universe a few years down the line (which I imagine would be a much larger deal given Dig Dug's probably one of their biggest franchises in this world.)

  • Alex Kidd's Pengo & Friends! (Mega Drive, 1995) - A reworked Pepenga Pengo that features Pengo and Alex, teaming up to handle an explosion of Sno-Bees trying to invade the Radaxian mainland after the ocean mysteriously freezes over. The general gameplay remains the same, with the focus being on creating and pushing ice blocks to destroy enemies, but Pengo is joined by Alex, Stella, and Igul (all of whom wear large, fluffy coats, which prevent them from performing punches), who appear in the four-player battle mode.

  • Alex Kidd: Shellcore Showdown! (Arcade, 1996) - When a programmer behind the creation of Fighting Vipers experimented with including Alex and Stella in the game, Yu Suzuki opted to greenlight a dedicated Alex Kidd title in the engine. To try and maintain the "crossover appeal" of the series up to this point, each character appeared in redesigns inspired by recent SEGA titles - Alex would appear as Akira (from Virtua Fighter), for example - and would feature a moveset inspired by those titles in turn. This game would become something of an obscure novelty in the future.

  • Fantastic Fantasy Force (Saturn, 1997) - A rail-shooter in true 3D, reusing the engine developed for the Panzer Dragoon series for a unique take on the burgeoning Fantasy Force series. When the Legion of Dreams invades the waking world, the boundaries between dreams and reality begin to shift, with the Fantasy Zone beginning to collapse into nothingness; so it's down to the Fantasy Force to restore the balance. Doing away with the assists from the previous game, its roster of seven playable characters each possess unique mechanics and "gimmicks" unique to them.
Idk, this seems like it could be an interesting alternative way to keep Alex Kidd fresh going forward, and bring a similar kind of "this was always meant to happen!" aura to his inclusion in Brawl that Sonic brought in our real world - though, rather than being through a "rivalry", more in the sense of Alex already being a wanderer between worlds. Of course, Alex and the gang getting slotted into random other projects also feels like it might make sense - but I suppose their home series might take a hit.

(...hopefully this isn't necroposting.)

Do mii costumes or series represented by just music count as third party series in this concept?

If so, I wonder if the sans is ness theory would be seen as more feasible lmao
I almost have to wonder if UNDERTALE would have been more directly marketed as some kind of MOTHER successor, rather than just being "MOTHER-inspired". That said, it would admittedly be pretty funny for that theory to actually have some grounding in reality... I'm almost certain people would make the "Papyrus is either a Starman or wearing a Starman's armour" connection, too, which just feels like it'd raise so many more fascinating questions.

If the Mii series thing actually is the case, it just opens the door for even more seismic shifts in so many different ways...

...like, what manner of thing led Nintendo to open-source DOOM's source code? I imagine this story (in-universe) would likely end up being some absolutely massive cluster****, perhaps involving iD's developers (who are presumably Nintendo employees) either going behind Nintendo's back to release the code in 1997, or deliberately releasing the code of an entirely separate "DOOM engine" prior to DOOM's release (in 1993) and then making DOOM in that engine as a kind of loophole, but either way, it feels like the kind of thing I'm almost certain Nintendo wouldn't approve of (and that'd have a really interesting story behind it.)

What do you think Minecraft is like in this? Did Nintendo develop it themselves or did they buy it like Microsoft? If by Nintendo, did it debut on the Wii or Wii U, or something else? Would it even get as popular as it is now? If they bought it would they still let Mojang support Java Edition on PC? Microsoft bought it after ports like XBox 360, Playstation 3 or pocket Edition were created, so would Nintendo let Mojang keep supporting the other consoles? What would Bedrock edition even look like?
