Popo and Nana, everyone's favorite ice climbers. Are they disserving of their own series?

My vote is yes. They are basically a pair of characters possessing about 99.99999 % unexplored potential. Many an adventure could take place atop Icicle Glacier.

Now the question is: Are they worthy?

Why not?

Now, if they were to star in their own game, what would it be like? What would the plot be? Would there be a villain? What would their world be like? Would we play as one ice climber only, switch between the two, or both at the same time? Items and learnable moves/upgrades? WHAT!!!

I'll give my two cents, and then everyone can give their own opinions! :chuckle:

First off: Gameplay.

Gameplay would resemble that of Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie-esque gameplay.

Ice Climbers' main goal would be to collect vegetables (in place of stars, jiggies, et cetera). The more vegetables the ice climbers have, the more they can plant in their garden at home. The more plants they plant, the more plants produced, the more money they get, allowing them to get passed more and more outposts scattered across their icy land.

???

Outposts consist of Topi's that guard their nearby homes. Topi's live in villages; some are friendly, and have huts and shops you can stop by in to collect goods and what not. Others are more aggressive, and serve as normal baddies.

Passed outposts are worlds or zones in which the Ice Climbers can explore. Collecting gooddies such as more vegetables and setting flags atop mountain tops are what the main goals in each world are. However, there are many other things to do, such as help the locals fight off swarms of Nitpickers, battle Yeti's, and what not. The Ice Climbers will stay busy, for sure!

Plot: I think if a villain was introduced, that'd be just plain awesome.

The Ice Climber's world sits atop Infinite Glacier, a huuuuuge mass of ice floating in an indefinite, frozen sea. Most of the glacier is occupied by Icicle Mountain, a huge mountain in the center of the glacier where many Glacier occupants reside.

At the tip top, a fire-based creature awakens, and begins wreaking havoc across the Glacier. After trashing the Ice Climbers home at the mountain's base, Popo and Nana set off on a quest to save Icicle Mountain!

Enemies:

Topi--A common enemy; some wield spears, while others push blocks of ice.

Nitpickers--Small flying enemies that don't pose much of a threat.

Polar Bear--Huge polar bears sporting shades and pink shorts. Some are friendly, while others want nothing more than to knock any guests off their perilous perches!

And of course, many new enemies will be introduced.

Abilities: Starting off with their hammers, Popo and Nana don't have much else to offer. However, they can obtain ropes with which they can preform similar functions to that of belay, as well as many new functions. The Ice Climbers can obtain the ability to freeze their breath, and therefore enemies nearby. Ice Climbers will also obtain the ability to shoot blocks of ice.

So far, this is pretty much Smash Brothers in 3D as the Ice Climbers (move-wise, at least). But that's where you come in! What unique abilities could they gain?

Welp, I hope someone likes this topic. Give your opinions, and own ideas for an Ice Climber game! :)

An Ice Climbers platformer similar to Banjo-Kazooie or something would be AMAZING. The Ice Climbers basically have no background or anything, so it'd be good to have a game that's not in the NES era. x.x That way they could have a story or something. Kinda hard to not have a story nowadays.

Villian could be some...vegetable stealing animal or something. >_>

I think playing as one IC, but having the other there to do team moves would be awesome. The other would follow you and be controlled by AI. You could set it to attack, just follow, support, and other things.

I think having the general area you explore being icy would be good. It'd be awkward controlling the ice climbers outside of a snowy area. ._. Do not want.

They could make a pretty good game from it, but Nintendo really doesn't care about it's old, obscure franchies like Ice Climbers and Mach Rider.

I was toying witht the notion of making Nana controller by another character, just like in the old days?

If the two were relatively close, it'd be one screen. If Popo or Nana ran off, the screen would split. If Popo ran off to the right, the screen would split, then Popo's screen would switch to the left side (to better suit the players playing),and vice versa.

How would that work?

Also....

Area:

Balloon Arena.

An arena high up in the clouds, and accessible later in the game (after climbing a large portion of Icicle Mountain). A Balloon Fighter-esque arena/stadium where participents face off against bosses and hordes of enemies in tournaments and what not. (Think Colloseum from Kingdom Hearts). It seems like Smash likes tying Balloon Fighter and Ice Climber together, so why not keep up the trend?

♣ I do wonder if topic's like this are allowed? ^_^; ♥

♣ I did enjoy Ice Climbers a bit, but I didn't like how you can die by falling too far, kind of like how Jumpman die's if he falls too far in Donkey Kong. ); ♥

Lol at chaingrabbing Topi's.

Falling too far wouldn't be as much as a problem if the game were based on a 3D plain. ^.^ Just bottomless pits, which are common in every game hehe.

I was never a fan of the original game, but that was because of the awful jumps you had to make, and the fact Popo would only gain vertical momentum half the time, so you could jump between two blocks, but could never land on them without a run up, or breaking most of the blocks above you.

However, I think a sequel would be good, and why I like 3D platformers, I'd rather have it like Smash, so 3D in a 2D plane, but with better controls, larger levels that sprawl out as well as up, and the ability to play as them both in single player, ala Sonic and Tails in Sonic 2.

And main badguy has to be the Condor.

I agree, with Wiiware, DSiware and Wi-Fi, an Ice Climber sequel/remake could easily work. Too bad there are no plans for such a game, just like the Kid Icarus, Earthbound, Star Fox, F-Zero, and Balloon Fight sequels.
