So do you think Hype is good or Bad? HYpe can convince you to buy a great game you never thought and miss out on , but could ruin the Game itself. What do you think?

Hype is terrible, theres a fine line between advertising a game and making it sound like the next best thing.

GOW1- great game, to me no argument, as good as I thought it was going to be; NOT EVEN CLOSE

Halo 1, there were no expectations so it became a legendery game but bc of it the next two halos turned out to not be that good bc of their hype, but they are still really good games.

Melee, only talked about among nintendo fans, so mild hype and appreciated by gamers everywhere as well as a great competitive game. The overall turnout for the game was ok but what it turned into made it so brawl had a huge hype, now whether brawl is a good game or not Im not going into bc that will stray away from the topic, but the hype of brawl, i think, made it seem bttr than it was.

i could go on, the point is hype is bad, advertisement is good though.

Hype is like a two edged sword. It brings your product out to the mainstream and really gets people excited about your product. Hype brings in more sales. The other side of the blade though, is the when your product doesn't live up to the hype. Being overhyped causes you to get negative press and word of mouth. This results in your product dropping off in sales.

If your company can't afford to market properly then it is a good idea to consider going for hype which is relatively cheap.

On the HD consoles Hype is great as most sales come from the launch week. For the wii though hype is a lot more risky because your launch generally isn't that great however good legs will allow the product to eventually sell well.

In my opinion having hype is for the most part good especially for companies with low budgets. Without good advertising your product won't sell but hype is a good way to get your product recognized without having to pay for advertising. If you are really going to hype your game up make sure you have something to support it.

In the case of Brawl, the game was massively hyped pre launch. However hype began to steadily drop after the Japanese release. There was still a large enough amount of hype to move the software from NA shelves, but by the time the PAL version was out the game had lost most of its hype. It is still the best selling Smash Bros to date but it could have done better.

Hype is in a term of good and/or bad.

Good: When you make the game exciting to buy, this proves that this game is a very big deal that everyone should see.

Bad: When people drain the game to the point that they realize it's not a perfect game and then toss it away like a piece of trash.

Hype can be great, or awful.

Good: Makes great sales, and hype for game could create a sequel to game which could be another gem.

Bad: Fable.

Hype requires skill and timing to for a company to use effective, if just the right amount of hype is in place for just the right amount of time, sales are up, people are satisfied (got what they expected) everybody wins (can't think of any games that fit this one). Most of the time though, there is too much hype for too long and it leads to disappointment no matter how great the game is ( like Zelda: TP), sometimes, a below average game gets more sales than it deserves because of the hype that surrounds it (coughbarwlcough).

So yeah hype.

Hype is, in my opinion, almost ALWAYS bad -- only once in a blue moon does it turn out okay. It makes however much time you spend waiting for the game exciting, but once you actually get it it will NEVER meet your expectations. The longer you hype, the worse it gets. I think if you hype for a day or a week, maybe not, but a month or more and you're likely going to be disappointed, possibly so much that the game sucks. Had I not hyped and learned about every feature of Brawl before the game came out, maybe I would've gotten tired of it sixth months later. And maybe I would've decided it sucked sixth months later, too.

Mirror's Edge is another example of something I hyped. It was only for about a month that I was actually hyping it before I got it, but it still didn't turn out to meet expectations. I played through about half the game and then I analyzed it and thought about why I didn't like the game, and realized it was a lack of speed. Then I realized that it wasn't going to be as fast as the Prologue, and I resigned myself to that as I finished the game. After I realized that, I was able to relax and just enjoy the game for what it was. And now I'm really happy, because after playing through the story again to get the Test of Faith achievement and starting the story again to play Hard mode and get the Pro Runner achievement, I had a realization. I realized that, now that I knew where I was going, could better avoid enemies, and things like that, I could actually move quickly...and while nothing can match the exact speed and exhilaration of the Prologue, the others now come much closer, and so...I can enjoy the game a lot, now. It's what I expected, in a different way. But had I not sat down and thought about why it was a letdown and accepted it as early as I did, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy it so much. I would've worn out the game for myself and THEN realized it, and wouldn't have enjoyed the game.

...My point being, hype has ruined and almost ruined games for me. I think the only game that I hyped up that turned out to be awesome for me was Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. The fact that it has such a potential to ruin games makes it very dangerous. The games I've stumbled upon, or not expected much of, have been some of the most fun -- Phoenix Wright and Sonic '06 as an example of both. Phoenix Wright I hadn't really done much research into, but I wanted to get it since it was pretty popular and my friends seemed to like it a lot -- and I really love it. My favorite game on the DS, by far. Sonic '06...well, I don't think I need to tell anyone how bad a rep it has. Many consider it the worst Sonic game, it got horrid scores from a lot of critics, and I commonly hear it used as a point of reference -- "...at least it's not as bad as Sonic '06." The fact that the whole Sonic x Elise thing is in there didn't really help my opinion. But after I got my 360, a friend gave it to me and since I now owned the game I figured I might as well try it out. I did, and...wow, it wasn't as bad as people said at all. Glitchy at parts, yes...corny plot at some times, yes...but the graphics look pretty nice, I like the revival of the Adventure Field from SA1, and the gameplay was fun overall.

Hype is something that, from the consumer perspective, should ALWAYS be avoided if possible. Don't ignore game information completely for fear of finding a game you might want to hype, but don't go nuts over it either. Unfortunately, I'm so eccentric and weird that if I find a game that looks really good, or is the sequel to a really good game, I won't be able to avoid it. And some hype CAN be good...you want to await a game's release, but...it's ideal to tone it down to a point where you want the game but don't research it like crazy or spend every waking moment wondering what it'll be like.

Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Brawl, and City Folk have all been overhyped. Star Fox Wii, Pikmin 3, Kid Icarus Wii, and even the Turtle Smash Bros. game are all very vulnerable to being hit by the hype craze. Galaxy, TP, Brawl, and City Folk aren't bad games, they just don't live to all the hype.

SMG and TP were both expected to be the best games of all time. Brawl was expected to be as or more competetive than Melee, have an excellent single-player adventure mode, and have decent Wi-Fi. There were also characters that some people wanted in really badly and/or assumed that would get in. I really thought that Krystal was going to be in Brawl and I decided to stay mostly spoiler free.

When I only had one more character to unlock, I honestly thought that Megaman would be in to be the third 3rd party character. Even though Krystal isn't going to be in, it would still be neat to play as Megaman. Once I got the final unlockable character, I was suprised that it was Wolf who I never expected. I used to like Wolf, but since he's not Krystal or Megaman, I decided to ditch him.

A ton of people thought that AC:CF was going to be vastly different from the previous AC games. Man, were they wrong. I was just expecting AC:CF to have different town music and they didn't even change that.

The only two games on the Wii that lived up to their hype are Wario Land: Shake and Megaman 9 (which is also avalible on the 360 and PS3). Hype really does more bad than good.

Let's see here, I got Star Fox Adventures, Assault, and Command just because of Krystal and they were nowhere near as good as Star Fox 64. Zelda (except for maybe the CD-i games) beats out Adventures in being an action adventure. I have never played another 3rd person shooter, but I'm pretty sure the majority of them including Shadow the Hedgehog are better than Assault. Command isn't that great, because there are no rail-shooting sections (not counting the missiles). I had more fun playing Sonic Heroes than those 3 SF games combined. EDIT: I'm not going to buy another Star Fox game (aside from the SNES Star Fox) unless if they make it a true blue rail-shooter again.

I got Mega Man 9, because Mega Man is a well-known franchise and I never owned one of his games. Once I started playing it, I was having fun. Because I liked MM9, I got MM2 and I liked it as well.

If those games are what you consider overhyped then hype is a really good thing. I believe all of them have sold over 5 million copies. SMG and Brawl both did better than there successor. In my opinion SMG and Twilight princess are both one of the best in the series.

Who hyped City Folk? Anyone with eyes could tell that it would be a rehash of the Gamecube game with very few new features.

How is anyone going to hype those games you listed? Nintendo is keeping everything hush hush until the last minute.

Madworld, Killzone 2, Uncharted, Halo Wars, Conduit, Dragon Quest 10, and Final Fantasy 13 are the games that are getting huge amounts of hype. Heavy Rain and Alan wake are getting some hype as well.

So you're saying that millions of dissapointed people is a good thing. Just because a game gets a lot of sales because of hype doesn't mean it's a good game. I'm pretty sure City Folk is more of a Wild World rehash with some elements from the one in 64/GCN AC. While Wild World isn't drasticly different from the ones on the N64 and GCN, it introduced flower breeding, interacting with other PCs via Wi-Fi connection, the watering can and the slingshot, hairstyles/hats, it was portable, and it had different outside music from the first AC.

Fast foward to City Folk. No new tools, flower breeding is the same, and they recycled the outside themes of Wild World. Aside from some new shops (which are in the "city"), more character customization options, holidays, and Wii Speak, it's pretty much just like Wild World. City Folk didn't bring as much new features as Wild World did. While there were some crazy suggestions such as cooking and stuff, it would of been nice to have some of that stuff to differnate itself from Wild World like Wild World did from the first AC.

It depends how the hype is generated. Nintendo hypes up very well because they don't depend on much physical advertising and merchandising. Compare the hype of Brawl to the hype of Halo 3. Microsoft definitely bought their hype more than not and didn't really get the return they expected. Word of mouth is a very valuable resource that hasn't been utilized much.

Games never live up to the hype, so of course it isn't good. Just look what the overhyped Brawl did to the Smash community.
Makes me wonder that if we didn't have the Dojo how people would have reacted when the got brawl. I think the reaction would have been A LOT better because no one would have known X char was in the game.

People likely would have been all: "ZOMG! PT! 3 chars in 1!! lolololol"

Not that they didn't when he was announced but they reaction would have been a lot bigger since people wouldn't have known about it for 3 months.

Fable was a bit overhyped, but it turned out to be a really fun game to play. I can't think of anything that makes it bad other than a few annoying spots.

Now if you want a badly overhyped game, there's Quest 64 and Halo 3. Brawl is a matter of opinion, as I was a bit dissapointed in some things.

I didn't find Twilight Princess overall worth the wait, not that it isn't a solid game, but it feels out of place. Super Mario Galaxy, on the other hand, didn't. But hey, opinions differ.

Hype is good for people who are gullible to fall for it just because it LOOKS good. Hype is bad for others who don't want to hear it and want to wait for something worthwhile.

Even without the Dojo, people would of hyped Brawl. With no idea of what the cast is going to be like untill it gets released in Japan, people would be filled with even more false hope of their favorite characters getting in. The SSE wouldn't be hyped, but the majority of people would still let the SSE sit collecting virtual dust after unlocking all of the characters.

i think a lot of the hype for h3 was generated by halo fanatics who think all 3 are the best games ever. if uve seen the H3 pure pwnage epsidoe, thats close to what actually ahppened

Lets see, games I bought over hype...

(cricket noises)

Honestly, I don't think I got any game out of Hype. I got Brawl because It was Smash bros, And I really Like the series (it also got me on the hardcore area, so in that case, it did more than melee). Galaxy, I got it to tide over the lack of Brawl (I actually got it the day Brawl was supposed to come out too). I got Metroid Prime 3 Corruption after seeing some boss videos, and I got hunters, Prime, and Echoes to further my depth into Metroid. Pokemon, I am a Pokemon fanatic. Portal, I actually always kinda wanted it, I just didn't get it until a few days ago. In two months, I'm getting Left 4 dead not because of the hype, but because I think it would be a good game (and I'm 17 in two months). Really, I pretty much ignore Hype. Just give me some time to get into LoZ, and wait until Starfox gets a Wii game, and then that's every major Nintendo Series so far (Donkey Kong was thanks to Smash Bros, and Kirby was thanks to the Super star ultra remake).

Yeah, About that, I really Liked the original super smash Bros, so when the Gamecube came out I got Melee. When I first heard about Brawl, You bet I was excited, but not because of hype (this was before the Wii itself came out), but Because it was another Smash. The hype, the only real thing that hype did to affect me was pre-ordering it and waiting on the line 'till midnight (and get a wii fan so that the lens wouldn't be dusty, as rumors of dusty wii lenses causing Brawl copies in Japan were rampant).

The only supposedly Hype that actually has back up is the Conduit. Look at the Hands on and I only found 1 site that had one that was opposite to every one's else. Their iff was that there was water in a water treatment plant.

Go read it if you want
http://www.gamesradar.com/wii/the-c...0081113141123952039/g-2008041813828831009/p-2

But then again the Conduit may fall short of my expectations, which seem pretty high now that I've seen recent vids. I WANNA SEE THEM ALIENS MELT.

But then again I am the Conduits biggest support on this board(I assume)

Hype is bad. Hype is bad because the majority of the time the only games that get hype are companies big enough to generate it on their own, or those that are particularly appealing to the widest possible audience. But usually both. You'll never see any decent games made by obscure companies getting a lot of hype. Do you think anything made my Paradox Interactive is going to get the hype that Fallout 3 got? Hell no, Bethesda cranks out hype almost as often as they do unfinished games. Is a new Sir Tech game going to recieve as much hype as Halo Whatever-number-it's-on? No, because the majority of people think Halo and Master Chief are cool. Is Jagged Alliance 3 (or any Strategy First title) getting the same hype that EA can generate despite it being the sequel to one of the greatest strategy games ever? No, because EA is a souless void of a corporation.

I'm kidding about that last bit of course (Strategy First is going to go bankrupt before JA3 sees release), but I'm serious about hating hype in the state it currently is. Unless it starts putting some more focus on smaller companies it's just destroying companies that could be making triple A titles on a huge budget at a reasonable rate. Only big companies that do that now are really only Valve and Blizzard.

Animal Crossing is Nintendo's Madden. Wild World wasn't anything new, the concept was just well suited for a handheld.

See good, bad, and disappointed are all subjective. Sales on the other hand are objective. I am sure I can find a group of people that are quite happy with High School Music the video game, or my fitness coach. I am sure most would not consider either of those to be what one would call a good game.

However if you can find millions of people who are disappointed with Mario Galaxy then by all means I will retract my statements. Millions of disappointed fans is a vast exaggeration. Thousands I can believe, but millions is a bit steep. Especially considering there are those that think all the games you listed are the best in there series.

Like I have stated before hype is a double edged sword that when used right the results can be profitable, especially from a developers point of view.. It allows your game to be front loaded which often times allows for its success. It gets your game out their and known by the public and media.

Hype is better than not having any advertisement at all. Also it is usually the fans of a series that hype a game. Developers don't seem to do it that often with the exception of Brawl and Conduit.

I am sure if there was no Dojo, Brawl would not have been as successful as it has been. The hype allowed for brawl to be front loaded for its US launch. Without all the hype surrounding it Brawl would have taken several years to inch past Melee.

I fail to see how wii fit was hyped? It got a lot of press attention, but that isn't the same thing as hype. The press was very mixed on opinions of wii fit as well. I am sure we all knew that wii fit was made to compliment regular exercise not replace it.

No More heroes, De Blob, and Boom Blox are games that have for the most part gotten good reviews. Unfortunately have not gained amazing success in relation to other games that have not been as good. All of them lacked real hype. In fact De blob and Boom Blox both had advertisement campaigns.

On the other side you have Killzone 2 which has been one of the most hyped games to date. I have heard it being called the Halo killer and the Sony Savior. If I recall Killzone 1 was a sub par game, yet its sequel is still getting huge hype. This will allow Killzone 2 to sell at least 3 million copies. It doesn't even have to be a good game to sell well.

Well NMH2 is getting some hype now. Seeing that you start off with the Tsubaki MKIII, every one is wondering what beam katana's will make a debut. Plus a promise of a better open world is getting some attention as well. I think NMH2 is getting on the road of hype. It just needs a little something that will get it there *cough*motion+*cough*
