As said in the Direct, the 3ds version is slated to release in Summer 2014, which is 2-4 months away, if you want to count August. That means between now and August(at the latest), the entire roster should be revealed... Unless Sakurai chooses to keep a character or two secret. There are still plenty of veterans who haven't been revealed, and there's still newcomers as well. Will he reveal a majority of the roster all at once? How many characters are possibly left? Are more veterans going to be cut than we thought?

Opinions please.

Unlockable characters are generally revealed post release so after August they would be shown.

Simple. We get the game, and we see the rest of the roster.
And we just have post-release reveals. Kinda like what Brawl did.

Don't rule out September. That's still summer. Autumn begins September 23rd.

edit: I bet we still get a couple more veterans before release on good old miiverse, and probably one more newcomer as a hype machine.

Who were all the characters that were revealed post-release in Brawl exactly?
Ness, Marth, Luigi, Falco, ROB, Lucario, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, Toon Link, Wolf, Ganondorf, and Mr. Game & Watch. Out of all of these, 3 characters have been revealed pre-release for Smash 4: Marth, Luigi, and Lucario.

In terms of how Sakurai will reveal the rest of the Smash 4 cast, he may still reveal them on select release dates for other games like he did before up til E3, where he may reveal some newcomers.

I imagine any more character reveals we get will be at E3. Maybe One more after depending on when the 3DS version comes out. Any other characters will be hidden until then.

And there all unlockable characters. Sakurai has already revealed Luigi, Toon Link, Lucario, and Marth, characters who were unlockable in Brawl. I think Sakurai is revealing characters regardless of being unlockable or not. That's what's making me think about all this in the first place.

how he will reveal the rest of the characters that we didn't see before the release most likely the following below (if coming back anyway a couple are iffy the stars next to them represents going to be just fine and make it into smash 4
:falcon:*:ness2:*:jigglypuff:*
:falco:50/50:gw:*:ganondorf:*:mewtwopm:75%
:rob:*:wolf:50/50

will be shown just like the others already revealed

and possible the a couple of special cases (megaman and sonic clearly going to be unlockable)
:4luigi::4lucario::4tlink::4megaman::4sonic:
will simply get a how to unlock box just like snake and sonic on brawls dojo

Like 99.9% of the questions that try to predict Sakurai; there is no way to know until we find out.

One does not simply predict a professional troll.

And you still have to think about the newcomers. Will several of them be revealed at e3?

I am obviously not entirely positive, but I believe that we will get a veteran for May and June along with 2 newcomers and Mewtwo during E3. After that, 2-4 secret characters. That is just my guess.

I think he revealed them because they are no longer unlockable.

The fact that

I'm not entirely sure on that one. I would say at least Luigi remains unlockable, but the others are a mystery. I would also think Sonic is returning to being unlockable as well. Since Sakurai has revealed four previously unlockable characters pre-release, I would say other previously unlockable characters can be revealed pre-release as well... Predicting Sakurai is making my head hurt.

Well Luigi is a different story cause who honestly did not think he would return?

Lying about my country.
I expect maybe one more veteran, then the starting roster being revealed at E3, possibly playable.

Then it's just a short but painful wait until the 3DS version.

Doesn't Kirby Triple Deluxe come out in the US next friday, May 2nd? Metaknight (severely nerfed) could be next.

If any special case of newcomers that have to be unlocked mewtwo and ridley fit the bill for that catergory

But overall newcomers that are unlockable will be shown kindof the same way as veterans and they do not need directs/trailer stuff for trailers (they will get trailers but no direct or event required)

I don't think they will wait till the game is released to reveal newcomers that could potentially improve day 1 sales. I think the only reveals we will get post-release are veterans, semi-clones, or just general random characters that won't induce too much hype (ex. ROB during Brawl).

Same with unlockable newcomers the ones that would not bring too much hype will be revealed after 3ds release (that's the key of why I think rosalina is a starter)

My guess is that falco and wolf will be revealed together (whenever that is) and that wario and metaknight will be revealed at E3. Ness and Captain Falcon will be revealed next before E3. Ganondorf will either be revealed at E3 or after E3 but before release. We might get one or two newcomers at E3 including a new fire emblem character to replace Ike. The rest of the newcomers will be revealed at release.

After release we will see who was left out. I personally think (though I hope I'm wrong) that Ike, Lucas, ROB, Snake, Ice Climbers and Game and Watch will be left out.

When was Ice Climbers hinted?

Out of the 3 retro characters Game and Watch would probably stay as the mostly likely to return but I think ROB and IC and almost definitely out. That is just how it looks to me. Again I don't want to see anyone cut but Sakurai said there would probably be some cuts.

They always do that.
There were huuugely popular newcomers like Ganondorf, Marth, MewTwo, Falco, Wolf and Lucario revealed after release.
I don't see why it would be any different this time.

I'm curious to find this out myself. We'll get spoilers shortly after release, so don't worry.

I'm predicting an August release. Assuming this roster will be jam packed, we should be seeing several character reveals soon.

This is a hard thing to think about :c
Obviously I want to know EVERYTHING about the game before release.. but... I also want to be surprised once I get the game.

GAHHH. I just want a definite release date so I can take 3 days off of work Dx. Once I get it I have to stay off the internet until I unlock everyone.

just imagine.. "Congratulations, you just cleared Classic mode on Intense"!
... then this shows up..

E3 will likely see the street date, for the 3ds one at least, and probably 1-2 more character announcements assuming the unlockables he doesn't announce pre-release.

Some unlockable veterans will be kept secret until release. As for newcomers, I have a theory. Did you know how Sakurai is revealing characters from only big name or iconic franchises like Wii Fit, Animal Crossing, or Pokemon. I think that the more obscure newcomers like Isaac and Shulk will be revealed after release. Sakurai wants to make a trailer to commemorate the newcomers he shows off, and it's easier to generate hype with a well known character than with a more obscure character.

PoD will be of Sakurai opening a garbage can, showing the characters who've been cut.

Next PoD he will show the rest of the newcomers, which there is only one of. Ridley.
"Todays Picture of the Day is newcomer Ridley. He is the last newcomer in Smash for 3DS and Wii U. You may be wondering why we cut so many characters and have so few newcomers. I can tell you why. Ridley is just too big, so he takes up around half the disc space/cartridge space. We'll bring you more info on Ridley as the time comes"

Sacagawea-san will make some unlockables hard to get or figure out (since we wouldn't know they existed). So slowly up until the Wii U version's release he can keep them a secret for the most part and hint the ways to unlock them.

My guess for the rest is:
*One possible Vet reveal between now and E3, in May.
*At E3 another Smash Direct type of show revealing a newcomer and 2-4 more vets. Leaving us with ~35 confirmed which is how big Brawl's board was, not including swaps.
*A street date for Smash 3DS
*A narrowed down month release date for Smash WiiU with street date revealed in the fall.
*The Smash site slowly updated to include the entire roster and all the stages post release.

Well prepare to put the bag over your head after the release history is just going to repeat them selfs back at brawl

(Mr game and watch and ice climbers thought to be kicked and R.O.B is getting in this as well)

And as for the ice climber hint

That's from smash run mode

I think they will maybe unveil at least a few more veteran characters and maybe at least a newcomer character within the next few months before the 3DS version comes out.

And of course they are going to keep some veteran and newcomer character as secret unlockables for sure.

But that was during the early Gamecube days when the internet was still in it's infancy and secrets can actually be kept out of the public's knowledge.

edit: As for Wolf, any starfox fan would've bought the game for Fox and Falco already. As for Lucario, any pokemon fan would've bought the game for Pikachu, Jigglypuff, or the pkmn trainer (charizard, ivysaur, and squirtle).

Since the Wii U version is releasing later, the PotD will probably continue and update about characters who're unlockable. The newcomers will still get trailers but i doubt they'd have them in Directs since the game'll be out at that point.
