How useful do you find up-b?

I've seen a bit of back and forth on this but that was back when the game was newer (lol) but it tended to end up with people not liking it.

I understand its not the best of recoveries but it isnt that bad in all reality, and as an attack it is really useful to me. Its quick to come out, its pretty easy to hit with once you learn it, and best of all it lingers through an air dodge to still hit them and thats if they even see it coming.

Just wonding what everyone else thinks :)

It's pretty awesome. Gets a surprise KO every now and then. Most of the time it finishes a combo or continues an edgeguard. =)

Also I haven't seen anyone mention this before but you can up b out of a roll. I did it to a pal earlier for a KO and it was simply awesome and totally unexpected :p

i find it quite useful from time to time using it as an attack. It's not always expected and it can get you a KO from time to time. It's just not an attack to be relied on. As for it as a recovery...it's not too bad i guess. It's just that with recoveries like R.O.B.'s and snakes out there, it's hard for a tether recovery to look good

Shooting the tether out from standing position catches most people entirely by suprise, and the initial tether shot will pass through anything thinner than its length (for instance, the dorsal wing in Corneria). I'm still working on stagespiking people with it when they recover from below (risky, but so sexy I have to master it).

If I told you, I'd...... Oh forget it. Ohio.
First experience against Olimar I was constantly KO'd with it. Along with an annoying "Pikmin chaaain!".

But I do constantly find myself throwing the wiimote in anger that I was the length of a Pikmin hand away from grabbing on.

Like many have stated, it is easy damage that is incredibly unexpected. May as well if you get the chance.

As a recovery, easiest to gimp next to ivy. Nuff said.

i quit using olimar in ladder games because of his recovery. it was way too annoying losing matches where i was not outplayed just because of ledge gimping. takes a good bit of olimar's competitive edge away. i switched to GW, who never lets me down with his beautiful recovery.

i use up b a lot when my opponent is coming down from an u-smash or their missed air move. it's good to throw out randomly too just to keep the enemy guessing

It is only unpredictable if it isn't spammed. When used in excess it becomes easily air-dodged and punishable. It does add for an interesting bit of mindgames though. The diagonal hitbox is so very different from all his other moves--it would be a shame not to exploit it. As far as recoveries go, no tethers aren't bad, it is just that olimar lacks any other recover option that makes it so unimpressive.

this is very very very old but lately i've been surprised with what people haven't heard about -

The up b also gives vertical height...duh...so therefore, you can do a simple techchase upwards following by an up b where you immediately land on any platform...however, be careful as pikmin have to catch up, a tilt is a better option here than a smash.

If anyone wants better information, i could make up a short video to show apps and such.

Also if you toss all your pikmin you get more height and the ability to grab the ledge instantly (no post move lag). It makes for a good recover option whenever you have very few pikmin. This small degree of momentum that his upb gives is extremely useful, but most people I play against have learned that if the edgehog doesn't kill me, they can easily ledgehop uair the little hop I do with his upb. Very frustrating indeed

Hold up a sec, Oli's tether can go thru MK's tornado? I had no idea haha. Speaking of MK, this move is incredibly useful for when MK tries to glide into Oli. I used to try to attack it, or roll away from it, but I would still get hit by it. just standing there and waiting to do the tether pretty much takes away that vital component of MK's game.

Yeah, I like the tether, but after reading thru some of these posts I realize I could be doing so much more with it. I'm generally always moving (and if I'm not moving I'm whistling) and so every now and then if my opponent is above me, I'll just suddenly stop moving, and then.... BAM!!! nailed with the tether. I'm trying to get some of those aerial combos that finish off with the tether, because I know it's super frustrating to get hit by that, especially if I rarely use it.

Main reason to use it offensively is because if used correctly, the range on it will make you nearly unable to be punished.

Because it's a recovery move, uB's priority is godly. Punches through MK's tornado, Marth's fair, etc.

As an offensive tactic: It sure catches people by surprise and gives nice damage. It's very good due to its unpredictability, but it can be punished if not used correctly.

As a recovery move: HORRIBLE. its probably the easiest to gimp next to ivysaur's. ( As someone said) And if you don't have enough pikman when recovering from a stage,... BU-BYE. Dead, it won't even reach the ledge.

Stage spiking?: Maybe, I'm not sure about it though.

actually, I think Olimar is the most gimpable, even more so than ivysaur. Ivysaur's tether is always going to be the same length, and that thing is super long. My friend who has a killer PT will usually throw a razor leaf at me, forcing me to get off the edge, and he will use that split second to grab on. Oli doesn't always have a full chain, and unless he can whistle or dribble a purple pikmin to the front fast, it never looks too good.

was messin around with the tether in friendlies yesterday... holy crap, I can't believe I never used it offensively before. It's a high priority attack that completely catches any opponent off guard, and it's super frustrating to get hit by it. It must be used sparingly though. I really wanna figure out how to pull off that stage spike with it though (when I'm edgeguarding, not recovering).

To spike, hit the center of gravity on the enemy. This is one of my worst things though...

Ivysaur's is longer and easier to land too. :/
Ivysaur's UP+B hits on the end of the vine, Olimar's is the whole thing so yeah.

mega super duper useful. Today I was standing in the ditch on the right side of the tree on pokemon stadium 1, and this snake was spamming me from the other side with grenades and nikitas. He jumped up on the platform of the tree and I hit up B, and he went flying for a KO.
