I know many of you here are looking forward to Smash Bros. Wi-Fi and the potential it might have. Having now grown up, it is a little difficult for me to find friends in the area to physically go to their house for a game of Smash Bros. To my current knowledge their has been some sort of confirmation of Wi-Fi in SBB. To me this would be one of the greatest things in the world. Like many others on this board, all I really want is a more balanced tweak of Melee with Online Capabilities.

I have seen a lot of games that claim they have Wi-Fi but sometimes it is some tacked on Mini-Game that one could hardly play over and over. For example, the New Zelda DS Game has Wi-Fi but it is some tacked on Mini-Game hardly worth your time. All the Square-Enix games also have pointless Wi-Fi services. I was wondering how upset would you be if some announcement came stating that SBB would have little or no Wi-Fi playability. For me this would really break the game. There is just so much single player one could do. The game would eventually get put on the shelf and I would move on to bigger and better things. A Level 9 computer can only bring so much happiness. So for me, if the Wi-Fi isn't there or is horrendously broken. I would have to say I would lose a huge amount of morale for the game. Wi-Fi isn't the greatest service I've game across and it pails in comparison to something like Battle.net or X-Box Live. Nintendo has never really gotten on the ball with online and I hope it doesn't take a next next gen SB to catch up. I was excited about Metroid Prime 3 but they recently announced no Wi-Fi play. I mean I love single player but it is getting to the point where ya gotta do both. In Halo 2 there is Single Player, Coop, and Online Play. That was last gen as well. Don't tell me the Wii doesn't have the resources to pull that off. The Wii Game Drought is definately a reality and it seems Nintendo is almost having to pump out the games without adding all the features they wanted. I am just worried that because the release of SBB is so soon that it will not reach it's full potential. Especially in the Wi-Fi department. Do you remember Super Mario Kart DS? Yes, it had decent online play but since then Wi-Fi play has been upgraded with a friend system and VOIP. But, because Mario Kart DS is cartridge based software it can never be upgraded and one must play it on Wi-Fi with its flaws. I know we have Super Mario Strikers: Charged to see how the Wi-Fi on the Wii will be but honestly I think they should release a bunch of other Wi-Fi games and perfect the services before releasing something as great as SBB. I mean we have to realize that when it is released... thats it. No changes, no additional features, no balancement. What you buy is what you get. So, to finish off this long post. I want to hear you guys opinions. How much will the Wi-Fi service affect your purchase/opinion of the game? What are your predictions of SBB Wi-Fi play? Do you think they will succceed or will it simply be a prototype like Super Mario Kart DS and the Wi-Fi gameplay will be perfected at a later date on different games. Please, let me know! The anxiety is killin' meh! =)

As long as it has online play, no matter how broken, I won't be disappointed.

I'm pretty sure this topic has been posted before, try using the search button next time.

I hope it has at least decent online play, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. The only reason I might get a Wii is for Brawl, but I'm first going to see how much better or worse the gameplay has gotten (and the Wi-Fi compatibility). I'll be moving next year, so I'll have to depend a lot on online play. It really comes down to that, I guess.

Online Play HAS been confirmed by Sakurai.
I know that online play is confirmed. That isn't what this thread is about. I want to know how bad you would be affected if the online play was flawed, cheapened, or was just some cheap tacked on Mini-Games. Any game out there can slap on a Wi-Fi sticker and confirm Wi-Fi playability. It doesn't take much to "confirm Wi-Fi".

As with Metroid Prime 3, How much is Nintendo actually focusing on Wi-Fi? I mean are they trying to create a lasting online service that will be playable for years or will it be as lagged and ******** as some of those other brawlers out there for the DS. Such as Jump Ultimate Super Stars. I just don't understand how they are going to make this miraculous turn around from the Wi-Fi service they have been displaying the last few years.

if they do it right it would be nice. and it shouldnt be hard to do right either. Just do it like Halo and have different kinds of matches based on what people wanna do. Allow custom hosted matches as well. FFA's, teams, 1v1 with or without items. the more customizable(sp?) it is, the better

I thought he just confermed Wifi use in some way(which could also be 24connect)
Ya very few details have been given. For all the public knows, it could just be some kind of time attack ranking system or some kind of Single Player Ranking system. Kind of like Heroes of Mana if you've ever played it. Just because the word Wi-Fi is involved doesn't mean its going to have the functionality people want. There hasn't been one Wi-Fi game that could match the makings of Battle.net or X-Box Live or any other basic online service for that matter. I mean Battle.net was created back in the Diablo 2 days and Blizzard was a lot freaken smaller then Nintendo is today. If they could pull off something like that then what in God's name is going on with Nintendo's wacky online infrastructure. From what I've seen, Nintendo just hasn't got the online aspect of things down. And I'm afraid it is going to show in SBB the only game in the world I truely want online play to be implemented. I know we will have to wait but from what I see of Wi-Fi now it isn't lookin too good and I don't know how they are going to make this huge turn around either. I know Super Strikers Charged is coming out soon and if it has decent Wi-Fi I will be totally relieved.

Well, assuming brawl's matches are set up similar to ssbm and even 64, it wouldn't be to hard to set up a host-join system would it? I mean, besides maximum players and whether or not the game is rated (something else that would be nice) all the menus are right there.

But then theres the chance that brawl will be totally new and innovative with match set-ups...

I'd probably just sell my Wii and play VF5 online on my 360.

No online would absolutely ruin it for me.

I'm hoping that the online is going to be good, because it's one of the things I'm really looking forward to in brawl. However, if the online isn't too well done, I'll still have a fun time playing with friends. (Still, making a solid online setup for brawl shouldn't be that hard at all).

By the time Brawl is out, I'll be moving to a smaller town, so the chances of me playing against other Brawlers will be that slim, so I really do hope for online play to be actually good.

Have any of you played Jump! Ultimate Superstars? I know its in Japanese but it has 4 player WiFi and you can customize your games to a certain extent. It has similar fighting aspects to SSBB. I have found that when I play WiFi with other people there is tremendous lag. Sometimes it isn't so bad but there always some sort of lag in the game. Brawl seems very similar to this... I just don't know if they can pull it off. If WiFi can't handle a 4 player 2D brawler how will it handle anything more intensive?

As long as the Wi-Fi mode isn't a complete hassle, and is actually user-friendly, I will undoubtedly play it. It doesn't matter how customizeable it is, or how deep it is, because I'm not one who needs "perfect" Smash matches. Just give me something that can fill in the hole created by my friends' absences, and I'll be happy.

I don't think we'll see online brawl. The statements released regarding online play don't seem optimistic.

yeah the online is gonna suck *** but noone around here knows anything about video games so they don't believe people when they say that.

It's in nintendo's online team on how to tackle online. Suakarai no matter how much he wants to put some sort of online in can't because that's up to nintendo.

Oh yeah and the wii probabley could not handle it, it's such a weak system.

ParaFish, paragraphing is your friend.

And ToxN, it's a good thing that you work for Nintendo, so you can tell us ahead of time that the online is going to suck.

The only statement regarding online play was "It will have online play."

ParaFish said:

That was a DS game. Brawl is a Wii game. The DS Wi-Fi games use a slower type of Wi-Fi than the Wii.

C'mon people, don't over-speculate about Brawl's online. The only thing we know about it is that it will exist.

Strikers Charged is out. In Europe. From what I've read, the online seems pretty good, especially for a first effort on Wii. This is what Wikipedia has to say:
Wikipedia said:
The online modes feature ranked random matches and unranked friendly matches.

Ranked matches put players up against a random opponent of a similar skill level and are restricted to players in the same region in order to maintain connection stability. A billboard showing the player's Miiwill be shown along with the "Striker of the Day". The Striker of the Day is the player who can earn the most points on a daily basis within a one week season. Players can earn points by winning matches, scoring goals, and even losing matches (although they won't earn as much as winning). Disconnecting from a match will cause players to lose points. The ranked matches do not use friend codes, are region specific, and support 1 vs. 1 and 2 vs. 2 player matches.

Friendly matches are casual matches in which players can go up against their friends. Unlike the ranked matches, the unranked matches use th friend code system, are not region specific, and there is no point system involved for winning or losing matches. Players are able to import their Mii, each Mii has their own friend code so that users can have separated friends lists than other people using the same console. The unranked matches support 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, and 3 vs. 1 player matches.

As long as they put it in Brawl, I'll be happy. I doubt it'll be bad though, they are probably working on it now making sure it's perfect. Didn't somebody say that Mario Strikers has no lag online? That seems harder to run then Brawl, so it should be fine.

It's a relative thing. Some ppl are guaranteed to lag, and some others won't.

But some people here are too optimistic... every1 having no latency issues is simply an impossible feat to accomplish.

The real question should be, how will Nintendo choose to deal with network latency in Brawl? Will they just slow the game down, or are they going with lag?

Personally I'd prefer that the game slows down instead of lag... lag is unacceptable in fighting games.

Has smash ever disappointed anyone?
Why do you think Mario Kart DS was a prototype? It was a racing game for a handheld. This is a fighting game for their flagship system. Mario Kart DS was preparation for Brawl.

Brawl will have online fighting, not some ******** minigame. It will work wonderfully. We will be able to set up our online matches the way we set up our at-home matches nowadays, how many stock, how much time, what items, etc etc. Why would Nintendo add a feature and then take away others that the new one requires? That makes no sense to me.

If you really think Nintendo is going to be like "ahahaha screw you you can look up the instructions online on smashbros.com how's that for wifi?", you have no faith in a company that has delivered on every major product. This thread fails.

You obviousley just started playing video games this year. Look at nintendo's history. This thread does not fail, you do.

EDIT: Oh yeah that makes real sense. a RACING GAME for a HANDHELD is a prototype for a FIGHTER on a CONSOLE.

Well, im fairly optomistic, but not to much!

I just would hate to be disapointed, and bottom line, nintendo doesnt care If I am... I mean, they still get the 50 bucks off of me, and definataly more next series through my foolish optomism...

I just hope sakurai is foolish enough to care about the 500$ he may make from "repeat Customers :)"

Because of this thread, I'm not going to sleep for the next few months, thanks a lot, guys!!!!!!

Lol, jk. I would be disappointed if there was laggy wifi or some crappy minigame, but this is undoubtedly Nintendo's biggest game in 07 or 08, so they should be pulling out all the stops on this one.

In other words, there's nothing to worry about, **** Tracy's on the case.

I made this point because MKDS was one of the first games out on WiFi. It had a few quirks and bugs and didn't have some of the nice features as newer games such as Metroid Prime: Hunters or Pokemon P/D. I'm just saying because Smash is going to be one of the first games out there it may come at a price. Just like MKDS it can never be upgraded. What you buy is what you get.

If its flawed, the games flawed. Don't get me wrong, I'm still gonna play it for a week strait even if Barbie is a new character. But online was confirmed, way to soon in my opinion, but also think this.

Brawl is probably complete. All of it. Just tweaking things. I think Nintendo will make sure the online mode is fun AND safe. I mean, whats gonna happen? Is some child molester gonna spell out inappropriate stuff using Ness' PK Thunder?

I would...

But did you ever think that maybe they'll do like they did in Halo? I mean, the game had a few cool glitches and such but once you bought/saved the extra maps pack onto you xbox hard drive many of the mistakes were fixed. (Sword Sniping anyone?) Just because you buy ssbb doesn't mean that its a done deal. I'm sure that there will be methods of fixing any "major" problems or quarks. Guitar Hero II has the option of buying and downloading new songs for the 360, why can't you download new updates for ssbb?

Because the wii has less hardrive space..

Although with how large amounts of memory you can get in a small space, what if they start selling hardrive expansion GC memory card slot additions..

That would make everything a lot easier for them!!

Hehe this kinda made me laugh. I can just imagine someone spelling out the word "Sex" with the PK thunder trace effect.

I am very convinced that Brawl will include wifi multiplayer battles. Xbox has live, and Nintendo cannot afford to stay behind in the online play. And since Brawl looks to be one of the best sellers, they will include it. They have also been working on this game for so long that there is bound to be some really advanced features. Masahiro Sakurai is a picky and determined person, so if he wants wifi play, he will most likely get wifi play.

So it seems there are a lot of optimistic people out there. Hearing the news about Super Strikers: Charged in Europe give me hope. But the thing I am getting confused about is the actual structure of WiFi. Is Nintendo DS WiFi and Nintendo Wii WiFi totally different? I have been hearing that Madden 08 will feature a different online system the the WiFi system and Friend codes users know of right now. So I am assuming that Nintendo WiFi is a lot less structured then X-box live or Battle.net. Does that mean each game does run on the same individual online standard or something?
