join date has nothing to do with when someone started playing competitively

i was really interested in competitive melee in 04/05. after a mini tournament i randomly was around to join while out with some friends downtown, i was told to go to this site by... i forget who it was and what they looked like at this point.

its still not easy to be competitive in melee, especially if you have no scene. HENCE, years after initially joining smashboards, i UPGRADED to 64, yesssss.

you're wrong, I guess

I started around 2008(ish)

Played competitive for a short while but i stopped trying to get better at this game. That same effort can be channeled into something else that *isnt* short lived.

I think what people are saying is that yes everyone can get better with hard work, but that everyone also has a maximum potential and that is not the same for everyone. Its like saying anyone can be a professional athlete if they just invest themselves 100%, which is just not true. Achievement is a combination of hard work and natural ability. People don't think that you have enough natural ability to get as good as the top players.

i understand what you mean, though perhaps people took my comment too seriously? it was just a jab at myself for not staying consistent, however the topic of 'practice vs. natural talent' would be more suited for the social thread.

Pshhhhh are you suggesting that we stay on topic in a 64 thread? Don't be absurd!

I love this game.

Okay so I don't really know that everyone would consider this "competitively,"
But ****, I'm 28 years old at this point, and I'm pretty sure I've been playing competitively from the get go.. Allow me to explain.
I started playing this game before there was a smashboards and my friends and I would look for anyone who thought they were good, and either beat them, or eventually get better and beat them. At this point we didnt know about Z-canceling, but neither did anyone else and the matches were intense and part of the metagames early development. We played to win, used moves that were less punishable, didn't know about DI but mashed sticks and buttons anyways.we relied way to much on hard reads and mind games but we were good for the time. I joined smashboards in 2005(coincidentally one day after my recent training buddy sensei joined) after rekindling intrest in the game with some of my old crew plus some new members. I was second best in our crew when the game first came out. My buddy who played pika was the best until i discovered smashboards. He couldnt beat me in 1vs1 against mario/kirby/jiggly/pika and lost interst knowing he wasnt the best. He is married now and just had his second kid. He will be 28 in April.

I played in a local tourney, hosted a tourney or two with people from my town and eventually fizzled out of playing competitively for years at a time because of college, girls, drugs, alcohol, work, acting, responsibility, slutty girls, hot girls, not-so-hot-girls(I was all about quantity over quality), a brief addiction to a crappy game(Call of Duty).

I went to Apex 2012, had the most amazing time, played for a month or so, then let all of the rust grow back for APEX 2013. After this most recent apex I haven't taken a break. I love this game and I am in the best smash shape of my life and continuing to rapidly improve with multiple characters and matchups.

A decade later, I love this game more than ever <3

I started in 1999, but didn't own a nintendo 64 myself, so I could only play it at relatives' houses etc. I played until maybe 2000, or 2001 in a noob competitive way since I thought I was the best, but only knew basic stuff, and played timed/item matches. Found out about emulation sometime in 2005 and fell in love with the game again. Discovered netplay shortly after, but had problems setting it up, as well as the fact that I got really into SSBM. Gave it a shot again, and got netplay working at like the very start of 2007. I started out on keyboard like many others. Got my first controller (xbox 360 pad) a few months later, and could do really fast shines on it lol. I bought the blue psx/n64 adapter and switched to n64 pad during the summer of 08. I also purchased an n64 so I could get console practice as well. I remained extremely active until about 2010 or so, and started playing on and off since then. Had a really ****ty joystick for a while, but got a replacement one from Knitephox at Apex 2013, and ordered 2 other ones from ebay. My original main was Mario, and I actually hated fox at first, because I remembered how annoying the fox cpu was as a kid lol.

These are some pretty neat stories. I will throw mine into the mix.

So I started when a little after I came to college. A lot of my friends back in my hometown played the game a lot, but I didn't understand the game so I got everyone to play Brawl instead. (LMAO) When I got to college, somebody in the dorm had the game so I ended up playing and was pretty soon me (Ness) and JNatty (Kirby) were by far the best on the floor. I chose Ness because I knew that his "throw was mad good and his juggles were best in the game" (LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL). We continued to beat everybody we played against at the school until we heard about a Smash 64 tournament at the school. We got beat by a couple of people who knew how to short hop and Z-cancel. So I got really salty and started reading every bit of information and watching tons of smash videos as a means to get better. We played them again a few months later and absolutely destroyed our previous competition thereby becoming the best on campus.

When I went to see my friends in Houston over the summer I had secretly surpassed everyone of my friends except for my one who taught me a lot about the psychological aspect of smash. I came back to school and made started posting on Smashboards and then Starking and Battlecow started being really aggressive towards me over the internet and telling me I was bad (LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL). The experience made me really indignant because I just wanted to be "good" at the game. I posted videos of myself and asked for critiquing, but very few people were helpful (Ballin4Life was actually really helpful) and many people were derisive so I ceased posting videos. It was then that me and JNatty were getting burned out at the game and were thinking about quitting the game when I heard about a tournament that was not unbelievably far out of the way so we decided to go just on a whim. When we got there, and the only competition was the Kero Crew, Caesar, and like 4 randoms. I got knocked into losers bracket by Caesar, he three stocked my Ness on Hyrule, but I switched to Jigglypuff and lost by one stock on Dreamland (This was my rational for Jiggs if you watched my set against him from Chain-Ace's Tourney). JNatty knocked me out of the tourney, but during this tourney that we first saw Kero and Stranded's combo games and they were really good, like WAAAAAAAY better than ours so it regenerated our interest in the game.

Ever since then me and JNatty have been working and trying to get better at the game because honestly Smash games are the best, like the only video games worth playing. I just love this game.

Just to clarify, the reason people were mean to you was because you were an arrogant little prick. Same reason people were mean to kero. Do as he did and embrace your past before moving on.

nah man. defuse means to take the fuse out of a bomb, aka make a bad thing stop. diffuse means to spread or cause to spread over a wide area or among a large number of people, like what you do to problems.

but "defuse the situation" would work as a sarcastic idiomatic put-down, whereas "diffuse the situation" is not really something people say. You're, like, creating a new idiom there. Diffusing is what, like, light does or whatever.

I didn't own a N64 when I was young so I had to play at my friend's house only. It was incredible how all I thought about was smash because I didn't have access to it (and it's awesome). He was better than me but this other kid on the block was the best, a legendary fox. To this day, I've never played him. I doubt he knew any ATs. Turns out my three friends and I all main Falcon and instead of playing each other all the time, spend about 50% of our smash time watching each other play 1 player mode (had to unlock that ness).
When I finally get an N64 I am able to play to my heart's content (except not really, video games are bad for yours eyes says mom). I have no real competition.

In 7th grade (2005?) my friend John moves from the East coast to Oregon. We start playing a lot and realize by ourselves that pika is the best character (my only claim to fame). Our matches are very even but when he doesn't play pika I win because my roll predictions are the best. Throughout high school John and I are known as the best kids at smash. Playing slowly fades out as we get older.

I get to college and decide I'm tired of losing to players who are worse than me. I had been watching pro videos and so had a good conceptual feel for higher level play but never practice. So I'm left with this awkward play style which is fundamentally sound but doesn't have the tech skill to support it. I decide that it's time to pick a main. This brings my to boom. His beautiful play style mixed with my Falcon nostalgia from my upbringing makes my choice of main obvious. I finally get online working and eventually get in a game with Taylor Swift who, I learn is Tank (shout out). When I tell him I've heard of him, he becomes pleased with me and we play for 3 hours. I learn a ridiculous amount. Tank is a great teacher and lets me combo him a few times in game. I leave exhilarated.

So now I start practicing smash. I practice alone in my room for a few hours a day. Only in training mode. I get so that short hopping is no big deal and z-cancelling is acceptable. Start learning combos. Go back online. Can't deal with 5 frame delay. So when I play people I lose, which is fine with me but I'm not playing my best which frustrates me. I go to my first tourny and win. Only two other good people there but I still feel solid about my performance.

I beat John solidly after not being sure how the match would go. He lives in a frat and is great at winning but not great at smash if that makes sense. This puts the seal on my accomplishments.

I'd still like to get better but playing online is so frustrating to me. If anyone lives in or near Oregon and wants to play, let me know. I'd love to learn more. Also, spring break is coming up if anyone wants to try some P2P.

now i remember why i love this forum

if battlecow had stopped posting i think i would've been able to quit this place outright

kero's welcome was ****ing amazing, that mediafire conversation still makes me shudder in a good way

also you don't rise to the top of a game just by staying consistent, that's not how competitive games work

hey TB whereabouts in Oregon are you? I might be heading to Willamette U for a weekend at some point. maaaaybe I could play a bit if you are nearby to there (would probably have to be like walking distance tbh, but worth asking :) )

But ****, I'm 28 years old at this point
damn bro you look pretty young ... did not realize you are an old ass man :p

i'm kinda jealous of everyone's stories about how they used to play tons of smash with their friends ... my friends quit playing against me pretty quickly :(

It was hatred that drove me onto the online scene. Hatred for my friend Steve. I couldn't bare to lose to him at anything. I swore to him I would one day crush him with ness, a plan that came to fruition after a few months of online play. In the set where my dominance became undeniable, he fell out of his chair, whining "there's nothing i can dooooo." That was the highlight of smash for me. so far. This was all in 2011.

I met megavolt last summer through some mutual friends, right around the time chain-ace starting hosting tourneys in red bank, and a few months before apex. Crazy good timing.

Yeah ... at the risk of sounding desperate, I'm willing to drive pretty far to be able to play with you. I live near Portland but in Corvallis when I'm at school. Either way, Willamette is right in between so it would be like an hour drive for me which I would be willing to do if you have a couple hours free. When are you going to be up there?

IDK yet, trying to plan a weekend there this spring cuz one of my friends goes there and he's about to graduate.

probably not worth the drive for you TBH; i wouldn't have a good place to play at there plus wouldn't be able to play for too long anyway since I'd be trying to hang out with my friend. if you're in the bay area sometime though hit me up.

Not counting if you played it as a kid and didnt know what you were doing. How long have you been competitively playing ssb? Also who was your first main?

I started playing with some friends that i started a band with in mid 2010. It was an after practice ritual to play SSB.
There were 4 of us so we did a lot of 4 player free for all.. 1 friend would always stay late and do 1v1s.
I didn't know anything about z canceling or short hopping until about a year later, and I started playing online last august (2012).

And my first main was Ness! those throws and dair chains on people who dont know how to tech hahaha. :ness64:

Too damn long... If I recall my pikachu has 20k+ Stocks and my Ness has 16k and my mario has 11k...

I started playing competitively in around 2007, when I first discovered Kaillera and PJ64k.

My first main was DK, but my playstyle was pretty bad (a bunch of grabs and no Z-cancelling because I knew nothing about it). I switched to Samus in late 2011, and she has been my top main character since that time ;)

I started playing melee pretty consistently from around 8th grade to 10th (2006-2008 ish?). We didn't really know of advanced techniques or anything. However, I remember our more knowledgeable playing partner knew how to wavedash and held it as a secret. Eventually Brawl came out and those friends lost interest in melee. My family had an N64 during this period and my brothers and I had played some ssb growing up but it was not yet a passion. Sometime during my junior year of high school I made some other friends who shared an interest in the smash series. My best friends older brother was our champion and his interest was only in ssb, so naturally we followed him and tada ssb was our game of choice. We still had no idea of advanced techniques so we were pretty much the standard grab/ fsmash whores. Our idea of combos revolved around the tent or simple ness combos that were so effective without knowing how to tech. Then I got to college and became humbled by true players. I learned that good is such a relative term, being the best smasher in your secluded crew doesn't mean much. So these past couple of years I was schooled in teching, z-canceling, and directional influence. My college smash sensei lent me hit n64 usb adapter and I dabbled online under a couple random names because I was self conscious very critical of my play in this learning process. My old apartment internet was shotty and I couldn't really play much. This past fall I started making the effort to go to campus computer labs to play. Once directional influence set in I finally felt like I was playing the game. After playing online consistently for only about 4 months I could see my skill increasing exponentially. A couple weeks ago I went to my first legit console tournament (forget the name but the one in MD not NJ, nintendude won over clubba). This was an experience to say the least. There's nothing like a best of three to throw off your nerves. I lost pretty handily to clubba first round and suicided like 3 times against some other guy in losers. The best part was that I got to play a bunch of friendlies against star king. These were fun and luckily he couldn't use a keyboard ^^. (sidenote: starking is wicked intimidating, the dude's huge, got a neck tattoo and a full beard). Uh so yeah fun stuff, I'm online like everyday so I'll see you there.

lol sheer you have this thing for doing innocuous and totally believable lies and then being like "OH FOOLED YOU ALL"

I like to imagine you as a child

"Hey Ryan did the mail come yet?"

"Yeah dad it's on the table"

"Huh, I don't see it"

"GOTCHA!"
