I start having issues with my eyes after a while, I can tell I'm wearing them out. But usually if I take a break and go look at things far away (or anything that isn't a screen in general) I feel fine after that.

I once thought it would be a really good idea to drink a dry martini before grand finals in order to calm my nerves. Instead, I just didn't give a **** about the results and played very poorly.

Not only is it normal to get fatigued through intense mental stress, but it's also possible to perform poorly through not enough mental activity. You enter a sort of auto-pilot and once you realize your performance is lacking, you only take more focus away from what you should be putting your full attention towards; thinking about not screwing up is the first step to choking.

I find that thinking about meticulous timing and switching up my strategy--keeping my mind busy--helps keep me alert and focused to where this doesn't become a big issue.

At tournaments, if I play too much, I just go outside for 5-10 mins to refresh myself then I can start again for more hours after usually I think. I kinda know from experience in the way I feel like I'll feel too tense or too hyped.. I go out to cooldown and reset my mindset.

I eat a big *** Burrito or Taco, all that hype food has made me been able to do 8+ hour sessions of pure manly meleeness, bathroom breaks excluded because of rotations. Though the longest I've been able to go full throttle with my main is around 9 hours? Started slowing down due to the fact it was 5 AM and hunger and sleep johns were setting in.

Stay in good physical shape. It also helps your technical skill indirectly since you're more in tune with your body.

This sounds like a bunch of bull ****. The best thing you can do is get a good night's sleep the night before, eat a good breakfast, and take regular breaks.

i think that ur problem lies in ur fitness. smash endurance is all about how fit ur body is. skip the sugars, try to hit up that protein and go lift. run a mile every day, jumprope. theres only so much u can do with the controller in ur hand, the rest is all dedication in the gym bro

make sure u dont get injured tho smash can get pretty intense

I mean, if you're so physically out of shape that just sitting down and moving your thumbs while thinking is too much, then I think you have bigger things to worry about than "Smash endurance." Otherwise, I don't know of anything that suggests a correlation between physical and mental endurance.

Hah, I lift weights at 5:00 AM three days a week. The best thing you can really do, especially before a tournament, is get a good night's rest, eat a good breakfast, take regular breaks, and try to relax your nerves.

Well if you're already working out and staying healthy, you wouldn't know the difference between doing so and not then.

Which clearly makes you right, despite a total lack of evidence.

Also there was a time when I didn't work out. I played Smash at the time. I'm a better player now, though, so I conclude that doing squats has improved my Smash skill. Once I'm squatting 350 I will finally be able to beat Axe.

I'm lucky I've never had an issue with endurance, even as someone who plays Falco and Fox a lot. I actually only play better as time goes on. My Fox is usually pretty jank, but at the two big tournaments I've been to (Pound 5 and Apex) and one week long smashfest, my Fox literally feels like it's moving flawlessly and it becomes SO much better as well as more fun because I can do almost anything I think of. If I just smash for 8-12 hours or so, my Fox won't reach that level at all, and doesn't even start to feel solid until it gets towards the end of the 8-12 hours.

I am usually the same way with Fox. Initially, my tech skill is somewhat poor, but after a few hours my tech skill is quite good and I look like I might actually know how to play. People are probably referring more to mental endurance over technical endurance: misspacing something, not following DI well, etc.

No, twebb was definitely talking about tech skill. Unless I am distorting his vocabulary somehow. As far as mental endurance goes, yeah, I pwn myself all the time. It doesn't even matter how long I'm playing for though; I just struggle to take friendlies seriously. If I play actual sets it helps me stay much more focused.

Actually, after reading the first post, you're right that the TC was referring to technique and execution. Being a Marth main, my issue is usually more mental. Though occasionally I will screw up basic things like wavedash forward smash and just full hop a bair instead due to stress, nerves, or having been playing all I day.

For both issues, though, I really think taking regular breaks goes a long way.

Yeah, but isn't there a requirement of at least three characters for a name?

You're right! I guess asking a mod for a name change is an exception to this rule

Wow, I think I'm going to request a name change. I'm thinking "Ka." Just to stand out.

honestly what helps me is to keep tech skill sort of contained like only throw out a waveshine on tech reads or only getting flashy once the opponent is flustered maybe it's because my fox isn't javi but i try to use my tech skill sparingly and unpredictably that way your mind is active while you try to shake things up and you indirectly get into your opponents head

T.Webb, also when you are close to enter the realm of the top players, it's definitely good to do everything you can to maximize efficiency which is why I said take breaks if you feel like your fingers or mindset is breaking down.

Well like I said in Lovage's thread, I practice by myself A LOT, so I would guess that doing that can greatly raise your stamina. If you play 5+ hours straight as practice, when you need to do that during tournaments it becomes less threatening because you know you can do it. You probably don't even have to practice that long as long as you keep up your intensity. I would say 2 hours of brutal tech skill practice with Fox is going to be better for building endurance than practicing chain grabs as Marth for 5 hours. Next time there's a tournament coming up, spend the night before practicing for as many hours you can as hard as you can and see how it affects your play the next day.

It's not really about...endurance for me

I only begin to play poorly when I get nervous and i've done the stepping outside to calm my nerves but it only got worse because after that I lost all hype. I have to basically hype myself to death to keep playing well.

I take a break outside or just take a step back when I'm eating you know?

It also depends on the atmosphere of the tournament too.
